We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Been without running water for almost a week as a result of the Texas Snowpocalypse. Thank goodness I kept up my Farmer's Carries, 'cause I've been a one-man bucket brigade of late. Got to skip dumbells, what with all the firewood I've sawed, split, and schlepped.
Dumbells versions of these lifts:
- require more effort to stabilize and control the weight, which build the "core" muscles that prevent injury. Older lifters take longer to recover from injury.
- accommodate and rectify imbalances in strengh. Can also be used asymmetrically to mimic normal activities. Again: functional, protective strength.
- allow more personal adjustment in movement, avoiding joint injury.
When I see someone use the phrase "functional strength", that's a signal to me that they really don't understand what strength is, how it is acquired, and how it is displayed.
4 weeks post surgery i'm starting back slowly lifting, doing 'deads' with dumbells first, adding a little each session and hopefully soon will be back using the bar as Rip instructs
