We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
His book is a must-read for anybody. It is a maritime classic. This is fun - who knew that the Brooklyn Bridge blocked tall ships? Melville changed his life, it seems.
The book is a great read. He invented the auto-sailer, which steered the ship for him in good weather. It allowed him to sleep, which wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. It was a first, but it’s now standard equipment.
Brier Island is fun for a night or two. It’s basically a rock with grass on top and shear cliffs straight down to the ocean with limited access because the tides are over thirty feet. At mid-tide you can see the level of the ocean change each time the waves roll out and then back in.
While we were there, we went whale watching in a zodiac boat, just the four of us and the captain. It was the best whale watch ever, they came right up under the boat, you could lean over the side and rub them. Safety required that we each wore a bulky orange suit that was meant to keep you warm and floating if you fell overboard. Whale watches in Boston are a dime a dozen, but my boys still talk about this one 20 years later.
I wish I could find an online version of Dodge's entire video of his, at the time record-setting solo circumnavigation of the globe... He also wrote a book that is available at Amazon... Here's a short from earlier this summer celebrating the 35th anniversary of his feat, Celebrating 35 years of American Promise!
Happy to say, I knew and worked for Dodge, and have some stories to share!
