We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Almost everybody's favorite opera buffa. Rossini wrote it in three weeks. Over 200 years old, and going strong because it is so much fun and so silly, with irresistable tunes.
Forget politics -this is joyful. Good actors too. Ain't Italian beautful? To me, Sienese Italian is the most musical and expressive tongue in the world.
Caution on that claim. Gilbert and Sullivan is essentially Opera Bouffe, just in English instead of the sainted Italian or German languages.
Distantly related: A wonderful quote from the estimable Larry Norman, Jesus Freak rocker from the 60's. "They said rock music was trash because it was too loud and you couldn't understand the words. So what did they have me study instead? German opera. What are the two things you know about German opera? Right. It's too loud and you can't understand the words."
The various Brits are acceptable in terms of American admiration. But the Victorian/Edwardian prejudice was true, even it it is ugly: "After Calais, it's all wogs."
I grudgingly allow the Dutch may also be okay.

I think Italian opera is wonderful background music.

Italian is expressive, French is romantic, German is aggressive.
The music is just DEVINE. Some of the best music comes from operas. Check out the blog EBL she puts a lot of opera and other music on her site. Plus many other great things, too.
