We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Interesting collating lightning with church bells. Bruuuuce does Dylan's 1964 song, with the lyrics, at Am. Digest.
Yes, poetry from a NYC thunderstorm. I've been in those, in a doorway with a gal. What sort of musical soul could write such a soulful tune? Bruuuce does not do all of the verses, but the following thing is the real Dylan.
I read that too, and I thought 'what ideals?' Revolution? Riots? Communism? Or was he referring to the ideals of the Viet Nam generation? When you say Baby Boomer you're talking about 2 different cultures.
Precisely, Jack. Some of us continue to hold those ideals. A lot of others copped out for cheap substitutes, among them being the very toxic approaches you noted.
In contrast, those ideals are why I walked into a hurricane shelter in.the middle of a ghetto in August of '69, and spent the subsequent 24 hours or so as their radio operator. I don't talk about this much anymore, mainly because it's too easily conflated with today's insipid virtue signalling. I doubt the virtue signallers would do anything like that, given the very real risk to life of the biggest hurricane anybody had ever seen coming straight up the river.
One last point occurs to me, one which I always took for granted until the events of this year. By the time the shelter calosed, pretty much all of us realised thar that the line the Professional Talkers had been feeding us about "blacks and whites" was largely fiction. Whether this made a long term difference, I can't say, apart from it's effects on me. I do have my doubts about it happening again in today's world.
Amnesty International is a profoundly corrupt organization. A good friend is imprisoned on “terrorism” charges in Turkey solely for the crime of receiving a PhD (paid for by the government of Turkey). Amnesty International could not care less. Pathetic that anyone would raise money for these grifters.
