Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Sunday, June 7. 2020Maggie's Survey: Getting back to normal, still quarantining, soft-quarantining, involuntarily quarantining?Where I live, people are getting away from town to breathe free, have fun, and to avoid rioters and protesters. New York State is still officially on "lockdown" but it's pretty much ignored now by the general public. Related, from Paris What are our readers doing this weekend? Trackbacks

Living and going out for walks in the Corbiere Hills in Languedoc, France.
We live in a relatively small town about 50 miles fro St. Louis. We have had a much smaller number of cases and deaths than the cities. Most things closed except for "essential" businesses. All of our deaths were in nursing homes that began with an infected ER doctor treating a patient that had fallen in a nursing home recovering "temporarily" from pneumonia. Unfortunately the old gentleman was treated by the ER doc. We have been open here for more than a month except for dine in restaurants some of which are dining in now. I still wear an R95 mask which I have had for work. I will continue to wear it for a while as I have a lung disease, and no I never smoked. Some stores required masks and the floors are marked for social distancing. On Memorial weekend our family ate outside at a local place. Our grown children and grandkids have not been in our house in case one of us has the virus and doesn't know it. Golf is now considered safe if proper guidelines are followed. Earlier some people driving by snitched as they said golfers were not social distancing. The local busybodies I guess.
Living normally here except having to slap on a cloth mask to shop. County is still officially under partial lock-down, but it's largely being ignored. Wuhan has been a problem in old folks homes, but not so much anywhere else. Hopefully we learn from Gov Wolf's mistakes with the big clumsy lockdown and in sending cases to the senior facilities.
Went to Wal-Mart. Didn't wear a mask. Ignored the "shop this way" arrows on the floor. I didn't even use hand sanitizer when I got out. I'm done with this sh*t.
Done with it. Company for dinner Friday. Went to niece and husband's home last night for wine on the porch. Wear a mask in grocery store and fruit stand.
PA resident - PA tranny medical director took his 95 yo mother from nursing home to a hotel and forced nursing homes to take Covid infected patients. My county -86% of deaths in nursing homes. Medical director still has its job. I am thinking this was fear mongering by the press. Ask yourself this - Why do they arrest a business owner who opens his or her business but not the person who loots and burns that business? This country is a mess. Also PA resident, my County the same thing with the nursing home deaths over 50%. Most here in my Community trying to get back to normal. Tennis courts opened under yellow, we are opening the outdoor pool next week. Unfortunately still shopping with mask. The local restaurants are creating outdoor eating spaces. Some of us are going to try to have an outdoor parking lot tailgate at one of the local restaurants. My neighbor is having a party on the 27th at his house. My granddaughter is having a graduation parade in her hometown, since graduation ceremony was cancelled. In the meantime New York and Philly are burning and being looted. The world is upside down.
Around my town, outdoor cafes packed with brunchers today. Good to see so many happy people out and about.
Life is pretty close to normal. Some, not many, shops are requiring masks. The local hospital requires a mask, which is fair enough in my mind. Restaurants opened to 50% capacity now, and there are crowds in good number. Grocery stocking levels back to near normal (except for disinfectant wipes, what's the deal??). We are visiting friends, going to church, dining afterwards. I'd put it at 85% normal.
Let's all look for that big COVID spike in 2 weeks' time, in all the blue cities. I'm thinking that Trump will let that milestone come, fail to be significant, and go. Then: Trump rallies, baby, all through summer, while all the blue-state-Big-Nurse-Busybody-Harpies do like they do..... giving Trump some of that sweet sweet rally material, They-Can-Riot-But-They-Can't-Go-To-Vote, laying it on thick. Camping at national parks, hiking. The parks are open but the facilities are not. Each park under different rules so it depends.
Here in the great state of AZ we're done with it. Walmart and the grocery stores are the only place in town still requiring their employees to wear masks, nobody is requiring customers to, about 10% of customers are. Hosted a small party the other night, hosting a pool party Friday. Our church is planning to do Vacation Bible School, and interest in it is through the roof. Parents are eager for their first opportunity to loan out their young'uns in months.
Fly fishing on the river. Practicing social distancing—pretty standard operating procedure with a 9 foot stick in your hand. Good to be back outside...any time on the river counts. Looking forward to the dove opener on September 1. Another opportunity to practice social distancing.
Saturday 6/6 my barber shop reopened, first time since March. I needed one badly (even though I was in on that last day they were open in March) so I made a shopping day of it. Nice weather for it. We've had a week and a half of hundred-degree weather so far this year, but the high is only about 80 now.
The big, noticeable difference is that more than half the small businesses in town are not only closed, but have taken down their signs meaning they are probably gone for good. I hope the public have learned their lesson and will refuse to believe in, or comply with, the next phony emergency, including the "second wave of Covid" that I'm sure will be declared in some areas. Here in my small town Texas traffic is getting back to normal. I take this to mean that generally commerce is getting back to normal. Not much emphasis on masks or distancing but some are doing it out of habit I think.
No new cases in my small county for over 2 weeks, and our total count was only 5, none of them serious. Outdoor activities are almost normal, but there's still some reluctance to get into a crowded indoor space. But here, construction, landscaping, and a lot of other businesses never did shut down. The worst thing was some weeks of shut-down beaches, piers, and boatramps. They're all open now, though the city's pool is not.
Normal for weeks out here on Baffin Bay in South Texas. Half masked or less at the stores in town 25 miles away. Our primary C-19 problem currently is that we are supposed to be in Newfoundland as of June 3 and the Canucks won't let us on the plane much less across their border. Keeping the cool weather to themselves I suppose. If a covid germ showed up here today the damn mosquitoes would suck the life out of it. Not sure which is worse?
Almost normal in North Georgia. No new new cases in the last 2 weeks in my county. Family in middle Georgia say no one hunkered and not many masked. Son in Savannah says that a lot of people still wearing masks but other than that it's normal.
Atlanta is another story with "protesters" and other idiots. What am I doing? Packing to move out of California. If the plague hadn't happened, we'd already be in San Antonio.
Living my life as I always have. It's called risk assessment.
Oh, and avoiding the media. It's nothing but hot garbage. Hiked Mount Hunger in northern Vermont today. Saw dozens of people on the trail. Maybe 5 or 6 wearing masks. Also saw lots of bugs (even though it was cool and windy) and dogs. None of them wore masks.
Its gone and its here to stay.
Actually seeing a slight increase in on the street masks, I'm not sure why. Many businesses are showing no sign of rebirth and I hear San Francisco rents are down 9%. In store its still masks. The net is average human life span my have a slight flattening in steady much higher, and why not. spent the weekend on my island home I
In the st lawrence. Cut the lawn, washed the house and boats, ate a burger on the deck. No madk, no shoes, no problem. Things in my Texas hometown are essentially back to normal, aside from the blinking road signs telling us to engage in social distancing and wear masks (most people are doing neither). Restaurants are allowed to operate at 75% capacity, and tourism in my town is back up to normal levels.
Austin, however, is still strictly enforcing the social-distancing and mask-wearing. One restaurant I went to is asking its customers to wear masks inside-- I went for the patio. Most places I used to frequent (gym, restaurants, salons) are respectively operating digitally, still doing take-out only, or are closed. Went to the gun range today with my dad and a friend-- they were only allowing two to a lane, and we had to wait in the car for an hour. Must've been tough to balance the post-riot demand at the range and the pandemic rules, I imagine. They weren't very friendly about it. My coworkers are still deploring the stupidity of people like me, who are going out and trying to live my life and have some semblance of fun. They're still worried about a second-wave. eyerolls for days It’s still ski season here in Washington State. I’m going to Mount Rainer to get some backcountry skinning in towards Camp Muir. I’m going to see lots of white people taking a needed break from all their posturing, yet still, actually doing nothing to help their fellow man.
I live under a flight path from Sea Tac
airport flights are back to normal lol Bob Coleman you are right Maybe 1 in 100 wear a mask over the last 3 weeks. This is in central Missouri. It seems that only retail store employees are wearing masks. Business as usual except for the spacing at restaurants. I suspect if the governor extends the social distancing plan he will have his ass handed to him in the next election. Enough of this BS. No added cases at the Lake of the Ozarks pool bars...how could a virus survive in the sun, in chlorinated water with alcohol wash downs?
The Israeli public has responded with apathy to attempts to gin up panic after the school system was reopened, with a predictable flurry of new cases. Right now people are furious at the teacher's union, which has been largely tone-deaf about stepping up in this crisis. Good for them - we need vouchers and reform here.
Both my employer (Israeli hi-tech company with corporate offices in California) and my wife's employer (a Tel Aviv law firm) are in no rush to return workers to the office. We have been told that it is likely we will work from home until the fall. Both firms were struggling with the higher office costs of the Tel Aviv real-estate boom. It looks like the lesson of flextime has been learned. The rest of the economy is largely open, although retail businesses still must look over their shoulders/pay lip service to regulations that have not yet been rolled back. So the security guy who checks your bag at the mall now has to take your temperature. Customers are not yet back, however. Predictably the economic hit has been made worse by ham-handed gubmint attempts to "help" and "subsidize". BTW - folks should send that clip from Paris needs to all their snobby America-hating, Europe-worshiping "progressive" acquaintances. Mess with their heads.
Sunny Southern Spain....Hung out on the beach, drank beer, read books and embarrassed my self trying to stand up paddle board. Two people wearing masks of the thousands I saw. The police and fire fighters have even stopped playing the game. Quite pleasant with no tourists. Only real change I’ve noticed is a fondness for the elbow bump instead of the full hug and kiss nightmare ..silver lining?
I wear a mask in one shop because I like them and they still ask for it. Otherwise. no, and no one has a problem with that. and, I turn off the TV. Have I mentioned that before??
Here in DC where anything and everything is permitted if you are a protester, rioter, looter, burner. Otherwise, the City is in some sort of re-opening phase, with one person per elevator, masks required, but some outdoor seating at newly re-opened restaurants (if they haven’t been burned out).
On Saturday we traveled from northeast MA to southern seacoast Maine to look at a piece of property we plan to build on, and at a couple of places we are considering renting while the build is happening. One of these rental places is in York. We stopped at Long Sands beach and went for a walk along the sidewalk - the tide was in so there wasn't much beach exposed. We were far from alone even though Maine is behind MA in opening. Hardly anyone was wearing a mask.
That afternoon our daughter and her family came over for a little cookout - the last in this house as we are moving out on the 12th. Sunday I was out and about locally doing errands in preparation for the move. Lots of people out. Most wearing masks inside retail establishments, because they are required to do so. Was not a typical Sunday in June crowd, but pretty darn close. Get ready for that great feeling of liberation upon leaving Tax-a-Masshole-chusetts.
Michigan opened bars and restaurants a midnight last, for two hours. I slept through it, not inclined to bars much at my age but im thrilled for the young'uns.
Never did wear a mask. Yeah, i know, im soooo selfish. Was at Meijer yesterday, about a third were maskfree. Lost 8 lbs. this spring due to general disgust and lack of eating out options. Will probably drop a few more because i cant bring myself to eat along side no one else in a public place. Whitmer's posse seem to think restaurants can make a profit serving at 50% capacity. Snitches are bitches, in this here pandemic. We are out doing pretty regularly and where we live folks are doing their thing, and maybe 10% of them are still wearing masks. Much of the time the mask wearers treat them as a fashion accessory, wearing them under their noses (or mouths) and adjust them frequently. We give the ones that look serious a fairly wide berth out of respect for their concern. We do have a relative who hasn't ventured outside the house since the dawn of COVID. /smh.
Here in college/national parks town, Montana we are waiting for the summer assault by out of towners. We have have two seasons here--winter and house guest! ;-)
Large part of the college population left town when the school closed down. That was a blessing because young people don't give a damn about anyone so they don't wear masks! However, the trailers, RVs, and hotel guests are starting to pour in from all places--mostly from high density urban areas. The next month or two should be a really easy to read statement of important information (population movement) to the CDC. Done with it although I never really stayed home. Mask, yes, 3ft distance, yes but been meeting neighbors and friends outside from the beginning. I am 75 years old, in good health, and live in the sticks 50 miles west of Washington DC.
Remember - our population is around 320 million and less than 1 % have been infected. So what is your chance of even encountering an infected person except in NY. Here in southern Ohio, things are steadily getting back to normal. Traffic way up and restaurants open, albeit at 50 percent capacity. Everyone out enjoying the weather. Few wear masks recreating. But mask wearing at grocery and Home Depot seems to be higher.
Sadly, Costco still requires masking. But at least there are no limits on meat buying. Local grocery operator Kroger has this lame brain restriction of only two meat items per customer. Two 20 pound briskets, no problem. But you ask the butcher for three pork chops and that is verboten. Only two!!! And tof course the cases are full. WTF!! Biggest issue is whether our fearless Governor Pint-Size and his health director Lord Acton force some kind of bifurcated school year on us in the Fall. 2 days on 3 days off, etc., etc. Law suits are coming and they aren't doing well in court. Big amusement park sued (King's Island) and they caved quickly. Push back everyone! Evidence for control is simply not there. Be friendly but firm. |
