Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Tinseltown is just another institution that has rotted from the inside out. Now they have to rely on pleasing their Chinese customers and CCP mandates. It seems to be rubbing elbows with academia as it descends ever deeper in the gutter. But then, find institutions that aren't sharing safe spaces with them.
If they were serious, they'd pull the SAG-AFTRA, Equity, or DGA cards of anyone who flew on private jets or owned more than one home exceeding 1500 square feet. The "You'll never work in this bidness again" sanction.
re The Left Is Not Going to Like This, but Trump Has Been Proven Right Over and Over Again
Trump being right does not matter one iota tp the Left. If confronted on an instance where Trump is right, they simply refuse to see it, or shift the goal posts. Anything Trump is correct on is quickly flushed down the memory hole, and then they revert to using The Narrative to critique Trump's efforts in the next issue he deals with. Do you ever see the media praising Trump for being right? The Narrative, that Trump is a bumbling, bombastic, incompetent buffoon still rules. Do you ever see the media praising Trump for being right?
The Narrative, that Trump is a bumbling, bombastic, incompetent buffoon still rules. --------------- The media's done themselves a LOT of damage with the Presidential daily Covid briefings. People could see for themselves just what jackasses the reporters were, posing idiotic gotcha questions and avoiding anything serious. Some in the media even knew it - that's why CNN and others stopped carrying the briefings and resorted to 'interpreting' what Trump was saying. They've shot themselves in the gut in their attempt to get rid of Trump. I'll tell you something: My in-laws live in the Caribbean, and the news they watch is CNN mostly, some BBC, and absolutely no Fox (because, there be heretics there). They believe what they hear. These are noteworthy individuals, prominent in public service (not elective politics), known for their integrity and intelligence, respected for their contributions to their country. But their connection to the US is via television. They believe its programming represents our culture faithfully.
The binary political condition of our society here in the US is very similar. On both sides, people who decide to get their news from those outlets also largely choose to abide by the message. I am regularly flabbergasted at the stuff my in-laws repeat, parroted from CNN and similar. These are smart people - and yet they buy off on the whole outrageous disinformation campaign, even when the proof - like the documented behind-doors-under-oath Congressional testimony being released right now - is right in front of their damned nose. You can tell people about things, and point them to the evidence, but you can't comprehend it for them. The reason that these political operatives lie for the camera and lie in print, conspire to derail governmental process, and then tell the truth under oath is because they can get away with it. They have cover from their media arm to prevent connecting the two. The truth comes out long after it can do any good, and too late to correct the spin damage. My elderly mother (in her nineties) still reads Time magazine every week as her primary source of news, has been reading that magazine her whole life. Suffice it to say, her knowledge about what is really going on is completely lacking, she's totally brainwashed by the nonsense that is in these liberal publications. It's kind of sad really, but I just basically refrain from having any discussions with her about politics, culture or anything else that is being propagandized.
I used to think you could trust the Economist as being unbiased, but even they have drunk the Koolaid in the last few years. re Justice Department dropping Flynn’s Trump-Russia case
The wife was clearly miffed about this yesterday jacked my blood pressure 30 points when she said the treatment of General Flynn was no different than the treatment of Monica Lewinsky. Apparently that must be the thinking some where in the fever swamps. Now that the truth is out about the terrible injustice served up to Gen Flynn we see that it was even more egregious than we ever knew. Even after it is clear Flynn did nothing wrong and the DOJ and FBI were tragically criminal in their actions the left insists that dropping the case against Flynn is the true miscarriage of justice. In an act of irony that should go down in history Schiff claims that since Flynn pleaded guilty that therefore even though the case is dropped that proves he is guilty. The irony is of course that in a blatantly dishonest and criminal act the prosecutors extorted Flynn to plead guilty or they would see to it that his son and his wife also went to jail for life. This alone is such an incredibly terrible thing for any prosecutor to do but especially when the prosecutor knows without doubt that the charges are pure BS and the victim of "justice" is innocent. It makes you wonder what in the hell is Schiff thinking? Schiff's dishonesty and eagerness to embrace this organized effort by government to punish innocent citizens makes me believe that every case he ever was involved in while he was a prosecutor should be reopened and looked at for prosecutorial misconduct.
Makes me wonder how many innocent people are railroaded every day by over zealous DA’s.
I'm thinking of a state that had a grandstanding AG who refused to settle cases he lost until he got NDAs effectively preventing the defendants from going to the media to clear their names. The good citizens of that state had no idea about this until a neighbour of one of these defendants talked, and the story wasn't spiked quickly enough. They still have no idea of the extent of the folly because theses are, after all, NDAs. What is known is that this AG's successor immediately threw out at least six hundred pending cases as being without merit.
I would like a lawyers opinion on this but I do not think a contract entered into under duress (extortion) is enforceable.
This is a very good read
Death by the Numbers QUOTE: Smart people—the ones who haven’t completely lost their heads over the Chinese coronavirus—have been asking why the world’s greatest economy is willingly committing economic suicide in real-time. We just saw jobless claims climb to over 30 million with real unemployment probably already at 20 percent. For perspective on that number consider that we did not pass 10 percent unemployment during the Great Depression until we were two years into it, when it eventually reached 15 percent in 1931. We blew past that number in the first six weeks of this economic takedown. But the other numbers surrounding this economic disaster are even more staggering. We—meaning the government—have already spent $6 trillion on all of this. If you throw in the potential GDP decline of 8 percent, off a GDP of $22 trillion, then tack on another $1.8 trillion or so in losses, that drives the cost to $7.8 trillion. For a more human perspective on what that looks like that’s an additional debt of over $60,000 per household. But let’s break it down by coronavirus cases and deaths. Even if you accept the numbers being reported—which to be clear, I do not, as the real case number is much higher and the number of real deaths from coronavirus is much lower—there are roughly 1.1 million cases in the United States and it has cost us over $7 million per case. With 72,133 fatalities (again, a questionable figure), that cost would come out to more than $107 million per death. https://amgreatness.com/2020/05/07/death-by-the-numbers/ One can quibble with the numbers of course. No one really knows how high unemployment was in the Great Depression. Some think it was as high as 25%. And who knows? Perhaps the $6 Trillion the Government has spent so far doesn't matter? It's inarguable that we have dealt the economy a staggering blow, and we are not done destroying it yet. How long it will take to recover and the long term consequences of this folly are anyone's guess. "Most Critically Ill Patients with COVID-19 Survive with Standard Treatment"
Probably true. So why even worry about vaccines and treatments. The standard should be "Oh! you have Covid-19? Take two tylenol and call me in the morning if you are still alive." I believe it is incredibly naive to try to deny the seriousness of this disease. Before this is over literally millions and millions will die worldwide. Those people who in the first few months were in denial and made stupid statements will look... stupid in 12-18 months. After this disease the world will never be the same. Can't you see that? Airline travel and cruises will never be the same again. It is probable that retirement/care homes will disappear forever. It is likely that wearing the mask will be a requirement to work in a restaurant. It is also likely that a variant of covid-19 will reappear every year to kill millions, every year, year after year. At the present rate of deaths we will pass 150,000 before August and it is likely that when we reopen the rate of deaths will increase. By this time next year the total deaths in the U.S. will be between 250,000 and 500,000. Almost every family will lose a grandparent. You may well be correct on the seriousness of this disease and the number of deaths this will cause. However, for a little perspective, 2,839,205 individuals died in this country of all causes in 2018. The excess deaths from COVID-19 will still be a fraction of that. Keeping the country locked down to save some unknown percentage of your 250,000 - 500,000 deaths while destroying the society they reside in looks to me to be a bad trade. And for the record I'm 67 and have a couple of the high risk factors.
Well first off, I don't want a lockdown and I think they should have opened up the country after 30 days, period.
But I don't think you even understand my point. A lot of people are going to die. We have a choice. With the right kind of preparations we could cut the total deaths from covid-19 in half. But in order to do that we have to accept that when we open up there will be a second wave and hundreds of thousands will die. We need to prepare for that. My fear is that many governors and mayors will do exactly what Deblasio and Cuomo did. For example sending sick people back to nursing homes where they spread the disease and killed 10,000 people unnecessarily. I don't think they did this with intent to kill I simply think they are incredibly stupid and cluelessly implemented policies that created killing fields. I don't think most governors and Mayors across America are any smarter. I believe it is a mistake to say something like " 2,839,205 individuals died in this country of all causes in 2018. The excess deaths from COVID-19 will still be a fraction of that." It is identical to saying 50,000,000 people died during WW II and that is just a fraction of those who died in Nazi concentration camps. Since when is it OK that 10,000 old people in nursing homes are killed by political stupidity??? Since when is it OK that 78,000 people are killed in America (so far) and it's no big deal. Just imagine that your child's school bus goes off the bridge on the way to school killing 20 kids and the school district says "But that's just a fraction of the number of people who die every year in American so no big deal". My guess is that THEN it would matter to you. Those comparisons are not very comparable. I do agree with the assessment of Cuomo and De Blasio. Sending infected people to unprepared nursing homes is about as dumb as it gets. It should rise to the level of negligent homicide. I wonder how he would feel if the same was done to his mother. One last thing, how come he gets his haircut and I can't.
It seems that you don't care what happens after the covid lockdown ends as long as we save grandma now. Once this thing is in the rearview mirror we may find out we have all but destroyed the economic engine of this country and will have exhausted our ability to continue. Will you be counting the deaths from the lockdown then? Call me stupid but I really worry that the cure will be worse than the disease.
Again; absolutely wrong. I think we should have totally opened up the country 2-3 weeks ago. The ONLY purpose of the closure was to allow us to catch up and get prepared. I personally consider grandma's life to be every bit as important as mine or yours. I think it is inhuman to write people off after age 55 or 65 or 45 or whatever number suits you.
I do think Trump and the other local politicians are getting bad advice about keeping the country locked down OR they are acting in bad faith intending to harm the economy for political gain. Open it up. Not 50% or 75% but 100%. I would even say ditch the phony wear the mask and social distancing requirements. Wear them if you want to but no mandate. Eventually most everyone will get this anyway, that's what viruses do, they spread. This one will too until it's done and/or mutates and begins all over again. "By this time next year the total deaths in the U.S. will be between 250,000 and 500,000. Almost every family will lose a grandparent."
Your numbers are wrong. It will be at least one kajillion deaths!!! Panic mongers like you are tedious. You've been wrong every step of the way, and yet you still scream your panic. Actually I've been correct on all my predictions. You just choose not to remember. But even I am surprised 78,513 deaths in the U.S. to date and 275,765 worldwide. My estimates were a little lower.
Also, studies of other countries are indicating under reporting of Covid-19 deaths by at least 50% and third world countries are even worse, many having no real idea how many covid-19 deaths they have. Then when you factor in China's intentional misreporting of deaths the total world wide is probably already past half a million. But no worries, it's just the flu or something. |
