Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Nah, I would just link to my own best stuff. Hardly fair, that.
A History of Pizza
The world’s most popular fast food has ancient roots, but it was a royal seal of approval that set it on the path to global domination. https://www.historytoday.com/archive/historians-cookbook/history-pizza Have we murdered the apostrophe?
Last year, the Apostrophe Protection Society was disbanded, having supposedly failed in its mission. But what is the correct use of the grammatical mark anyway? http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20200217-have-we-murdered-the-apostrophe Dammit, we've already lost the semicolon; where are we going to draw the line?
Ssshhh, they might put the underline next on the list.
Excuse me for prying: but is everyone (ahem) rising to the occasion and doing their bit to save the world.
Beats (Nyuck Nyuck) whatever Saint Greta had to offer by way of suggestion https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/3a8e5k/nyc-health-officials-covid-19-sex-guidelines-masturbate-self-isolation For those who want more opportunities for online faith community action during this time of crisis, the Anglican Diocese of New England [ADNE] is offering Zoom meetings for DAILY live Morning Prayer, Noonday Intercession and Compline. Tried it this morning and was so glad I did. Scroll down to bullet point number 2 on the ADNE page below to join a Zoom meeting.
http://www.ad-ne.org/diocesan-news/ourfinesthour2/ These meetings are not high tech, but thoughtful and prayerful times to be present to the Holy Scriptures and to pray for our families, communities, the nation and the world. Chloroquine Phosphate
There is fake news being spread, don't look stupid by spreading it. Many are aware of the man who died after taking Chloroquine Phosphate which was dispensed to him by his wife (likely in massive overdose ) from a package of Chloroquine Phosphate that they had on-hand for treating their koi fish. Lots are saying the press is passing "fake news" for saying that Chloroquine Phosphate is malaria medicine, and that Trump only spoke and tweeted about Hydroxychloroquine. Well, chloroquine phosphate (Aralen) is a malaria medicine: https://www.cdc.gov/malaria/resources/pdf/fsp/drugs/Chloroquine.pdf To suggest that chloroquine phosphate as the active ingredient in fish medication is in any way different from the chloroquine phosphate used as an antimalarial is false. And at the first press conference where they were mentioned by Trump, trump spoke both of Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine in reference to use with other drugs as treatment for COVID-19: https://www.rev.com/blog/transcripts/donald-trump-coronavirus-task-force-briefing-transcript-march-19-trump-takes-shots-at-the-media To suggest that he only spoke of Hydroxychloroquine is also false. The dose makes the poison.
Apparently the stupid twits figured a teaspoon would be a reasonable dose. Normal therapeutic dose is about 300 mg - teaspoon is 5000 mg+. The dose, in this case, did indeed make the poison. I don't know if this couple made their decision based on something they heard Trump say, but I do know this information about these drugs, including Aralen, has been circulating for months on news sites and blogs.
That sounds like just another attempt at a 'gotcha' story. The news reports that I read showed pictures of a chemical bottle that said NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.
Just to confirm: 1. Should people ever administer any kind of drugs to themselves on the basis of what the President says? 2. Did the President tell them to do that, if not, what did he actually say? 3. Were the people irresponsibly self-medicating? Fake news stories refrain from mentioning any of these points. "I have patients in their early 40s and, yeah, I was kind of shocked. I’m seeing people who look relatively healthy with a minimal health history, and they are completely wiped out, like they’ve been hit by a truck. This is knocking out what should be perfectly fit, healthy people. Patients will be on minimal support, on a little bit of oxygen, and then all of a sudden, they go into complete respiratory arrest, shut down and can’t breathe at all.”
http://raconteurreport.blogspot.com/2020/03/some-more-therapeutic-reality.html All over the US people who can sew are making washable face masks for medical staff at hospitals, nursing homes, doctor’s offices, hospice, etc. if you wish to participate see the instructions and especially the video at www.deaconess.com/how-to-make-a-face-mask. There may be disposables on the way but not quick enough.
Always good for a chuckle. Maybe two.

Not sure which browser you're using, but check and see if you can get an add on called the Great Suspender. Its general function is to suspend inactive tabs and reduce the amount of processing power your browser is using. You can also save sessions and it will automatically save recent sessions. Probably other applications for that, but Great Suspender is the one I use.

At the Silicon Graybeard website march 25. John P.A. Ioannidis weighs in on COVID-19 response.
BD, I hope everyone in your world is OK. Looks like NYC, northern NJ, and southern New England are being hit hard. We are starting to see knock-on effects in VT (lots of second homes here). Take care. Thank you for this blog. It's a wonderful service to the world.
