Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

"What the NYT’s 1619 Project aims to teach your kids..."
It's just the latest manifestation of the age-old human tendency to view history as a conspiracy theory. We, the U.S. citizens, are being set up for a revolution. This is just part of that effort, to convince us we are evil and have no right to our country. Another effort is abolition of our gun rights. This isn't accidental or coincidental it is planned and they are serious. The people behind these things are our enemy. They aren't simply someone with left wing views they are our mortal enemy and should be treated accordingly.
"What An Ally! Turkey’s Erdogan Sets Refugee Flood On NATO"
Er, not quite. Let me rewrite that for you: "Turkey’s Erdogan Sets Refugee Flood On the EU" Well put. Years ago, Rush had a theme song for her from "The Fantasticks,"
Try to Remember... First thing that came to mind, “I can’t remember my brains in a blender, it’s jello”
The proper response for Europe to the "immigrant" crisis is live fire. Yes, shoot them if they try to cross the border. They would learn very quickly that they aren't wanted. Have you actually seen these "immigrants"? They are all or mostly all men between 18 to 35, they all seem to be violent and oddly dressed the same and they all have smart phones. Do you really think that this is not an organized effort to invade Europe?
"Will canceling unused credit cards hurt my credit score?"
It CAN, especially if you cancel your oldest accounts. Because one of the factors in your credit score is length of credit. With very few exceptions, if you have to rely on your credit score for something, you're approaching your financial life a$$ backwards.
No one is suggesting you rely on your credit score and nothing else. The credit score is one of the best expressions of how a person handles his money.
It's the main reason my mortgage rate is 2.9%. In the case of my wife it actually helped her score. The thinking was that by canceling unused cards she was also killing the potential to run up a lot of credit charges, thus making her a better credit risk on her remaining card(s).
Now that Donald Trump is being blamed for the Coronavirus, would somebody please link to the sources of this claim. I seemed to have missed something.
Also, can State and Local agencies move faster to close down events, locations, business, etc. than the Federal Gov't? What role does the Federal Gov't play in these same pre emptive moves? Aside from closing down airports what other closures can the Federal gov't mandate and what is the necessary process before the Feds can move? Can the CDC (Center for Disease Control) move quickly to close down local events, schools, or do they have the necessary authority? Most of the suggestions to prevent infection are impractical and are really offered up to make it look like we/they are doing something. This virus is more transmittable than the common cold have you had any luck preventing the common cold. Keep your kids home from school, don't let them go out to play, don't allow anything from the outside into your house, for how long??? Months, maybe 18 months. Let me know how that works for you. This virus won't be contained by sneezing into your armpit or washing your hands. But go ahead and do all those things if it makes you feel empowered.
But some experts think the Corona virus will be a yearly thing like the cold or the flu. What then? Never travel again including to the stores. IMHO the worst places in order are cruise ships, nursing homes, hospitals/clinics and stores. Can you really by your actions avoid catching the corona virus? I don't think you can. I think even the good advice, like wash your hands and avoid crowds, will not prevent transmission.
There is no such thing as absolute safety. The best you can hope for is reasonable safety. My personal test of reasonability is whether you are more likely to be killed or injured travelling to the activity or while participating in the activity itself.
Until we have a week where more people are killed by corona virus than in car accidents, I don't see any need for draconian responses. Yes, reasonable precautions should be taken, just as you don't drive 100 miles per hour in the dark on a strange highway, but this whole idea that we are on the verge of an impending apocalypse which only The Party can save use from is just absurd. That is a logical fallacy. If you had said "22 people died in a tornado in Tennessee but it doesn't matter because more people die in auto accidents. Or 55 thousand American military died in Vietnam but it doesn't matter because more people die in auto accidents. it would be more apparent to you that it is a silly and even somewhat offensive statement. I can assure you that everyone who dies from corona virus had family who loved them and will miss them. If your intent is simply to downplay the effect of the virus I would suggest you wait about 6 months and see how this plays out. It could be far worse than car accidents and opioid overdoses put together. Or it may fizzle out and go away. But until we know how serious this virus is going to be I think it is too early to discount it's effects.
Chris Murphy's risk of exposure was 2/14 to 2/16. If he has not shown symptoms 18 days after his departure he is not infected. I realize that in some very rare cases symptoms are not seen for 27 days but again that is VERY rare. You should remove this post as BS.
? Except there are many well documented cases of infected people with no symptoms. 18 days and no symptoms means nothing.
Why is there any matter in the universe at all? A guy's gotta stand on something!
What the NYT’s 1619 Project aims to teach your kids: LIES, ever so many lies. The Power of Liberal Peer Condemnation on Conservatives: As Sarah Hoyt keeps saying, "I have a couple of middle fingers for that." No need to worry. The World Health Organization (WHO) is on top of this Corona virus problem.
The agency’s director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, released a document that cautioned those who associate the viral epidemic with “China,” “Wuhan” or “Asia” in particular to be more aware of people’s feelings. There! See! And you were worried that no one was taking this problem serious. |
