We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I remember when Tucker looked like he was 17 and wearing bow ties. He is a very quick wit and has a good heart.
One of his finer skills is rhetorical oratory. He could just as easily have taken the exact opposite theme and argued as persuasively.
That is a useful skill to have when contending with others for a living.
Hopefully, whatever inspiration Tucker may have found in that church will help him find his way out of the episcopalian structure. In the end, it is not brand of religion that will guide us but the faith and consistency of God's word as truth, of the form, that will deliver us from evil.
Epstein did not kill himself and Benny Hinn is not a Christian!
We enjoyed it as well, thanks BD. Methinks tho' that arguing the opposite would not be a sell, in spite of his charming skill at speaking off the cuff.
I agreed with this up until the line about Pharisees.
The folks on the other side of this debate could just as easily be described as Puritans, Crusaders, or Inquisitors. There is a long history of intolerance and coercion in Christianity as well.
America itself was settled by Protestant sects that were unable to live among other Christians in Europe, and attacked each other here in the New World.
From a Jewish perspective - it is Christianity (and Islam) that claim exclusive salvation. Probably because of their early need to compete with the mother religion. There is no parallel doctrine in Judaism to match the Christian assertion that only faith in Jesus saves. I have been told to my face that my Orthodox practice of Torah-true Judaism (= living like Jesus did) is worthless in G-d's eyes unless I "accept Christ". Only the mother religion of Judaism teaches that righteous gentiles are beloved of G-d and inherit a portion in the World to Come.
