Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re: Alarmists Propose Rebranding ‘Climate Change’ for Greater Shock Value
They've rebranded this so many times, each more manipulative than the Las, that I'm reminded of a MAD Magazine fold-in from back in my railroad days. It read, "NIXXON - New Name, Same Old Gas." Re: Save us from those saving the world
My first thought about this article was H. L. Mencken's quote: "The urge to save humanity is almost always a false-face for the urge to rule it." But then I read this from the column: QUOTE: But all these Ivy League smarty-pants couldn't come up with a slogan more original than 'Hey hey, ho ho, fossil fuels have got to go.' Who'd they learn that from, their grandparents? Decades ago, during Vietnam, it was 'Hey hey, ho ho, LBJ has got to go.'" These Ivy leaguers truly are lame! My high school had much more sophisticated and intelligent cheers. For example: "Progress! Progress! Ambulate over the turf!" and "Repell them! Repell them! Make them relinquish the ball!" Kennedy's best and brightest ended up underperforming. When these geniuses take over, the world will be in BIG trouble! Obesity: Most of this is a fake argument. Most of the fake argument is based on the BMI measurement. You are "obese" with a BMI of 30 or greater and yet a BMI of 30 is normal for athletes and weight lifters. Every cowboy in the bull riding and bucking horse event is BMI 30 or greater. The BMI is a terrible measure of "obesity". In our gut we know what "obesity" is and that is someone who weighs 300-450 lbs or more. But without exception the people who fall into this category are indeed victims of their genes. It is virtually impossible for them to get to 170 lbs. Conversely there are millions among us who are BMI 25 or so and eat too much, eat whatever we want to and couldn't get to a BMI of 30 if someone paid us to. We too are what we are because of our genes.
Is this something new? Hardly. For the last couple hundred years that we can prove most people in Mexico were obese, most Africans were obese, most American woman over age 50 were obese. In the 60's when I lived in Germany almost without exception all of the older Germans (over age 30) were obese. Obesity is not new and it is not only Americans. It is fun to disparage Americans and that is where a lot of this comes from. Having said all that is obesity a problem? Yes, for those people prone to gain too much weight obesity is a problem. Is "obesity" a serious health issue? That is more complicated. Many people who are obese have serious health issues over and above their obesity, in particular diabetes. People with diabetes are susceptible to many serious complications that cause early death. IF you wanted to you can use statistics to show that it is the obesity that is deadly by simply ignoring diabetes and other underlying issues. Let me give you an example of how easy it is to use statistics to distort reality: African Americans have shorter life expectancy than European Americans. The numbers look serious as though a black man of 60 is going to die tomorrow. But in fact it is mostly skewed by the gang shootings of black youths. If you understand the math behind statistics you understand that the death of an 18 YO is mathematically the equivalent of 10 deaths of a 60 YO when you are calculating life expectancy. It's kinda like getting 100% in 3 tests in school and averaging in one test where you get 0% correct. Statistics can be used to lie and almost every time they are used by the MSM and/or on the internet they are lying to you because of their own agenda.
Does obesity without serious underlying diseases cause early death? I don't know and I don't think the experts know either because they have been stuck on the fake statistics for so long they haven't looked at the underlying data. I do know that all of my aunts and female cousins were obese when they got old (over 50) and all of them lived into their 80's and a few into their 90's. No, I don't agree with this argument. I've worked in underdeveloped countries over periods of years and watched their economies grow, and in some cases, transform. In one such example, to begin with, on standard national diets (fish, legumes, local vegetables in plenty, rice, and limited red meat and the food supply constrained by cost), people were overwhelmingly naturally lean. Working class people were typically ripped, I would see shirtless fishermen who, as the norm, all had super muscle definition and enviable six-packs. Then Wendy's, MacDonald's, Pizza Hut, KFC etc arrived en masse as the economy grew, and guess what? Cheap carbohydrate-based processed foods became a widely available option, and within about 15 years obesity was a common problem and a pervasive, common sight on the streets; the New Normal. Where food is cheap, over-processed, and widely available, people get fat. Where it isn't, people are mostly skinny. At least that's my experience-based observation across third, second, and first world nations.
Yes it certainly seems to be true. However take a look at 60 year old National Geographic Magazines. In every picture taken in Africa the fat women dominate. Ditto for the South Pacific Islands and Mexico. It is genetic.
You didn't mention which countries you use as examples but you did mention your meme of choice to explain the sudden obesity and that is fast food and cheap carbs. OK, I'll agree slightly. But more than likely which ever countries you cite during the same time period their physical activity was dramatically reduced. So was it the McDonalds or the physical activity. AND also more than likely just like in the US of A there are many who do not become obese AND they eat at McDonalds and eat cheap carbs too. HMMMMM!!! How can that be possible since it is the cheap carbs that cause obesity??? It's a mystery... Unless it is genetic! Bingo!! If you are genetically predisposed to be overweight AND you can't get enough food AND you must work your ass off to survive you will not be able to become obese. BUT if suddenly there is food available and your job is a sedentary your genes win! The evidence is there for all to see. If it was just the food or just the exercise we would all be obese, but we are not. So it can't simply be the food. It can't simply be the exercise. It must be something else. Where is the common denominator??? Again I point to the fact that virtually every black African woman is 300 lbs plus, just as (almost) every Mexican adult over 30 is obese and every South Pacific Islander is obese. The evidence is there but you must open your eyes. I don't know what ' meme of choice' means. My examples draw from Central Asia, West (Negro) and North Africa (Arab), the Far East, and the Caribbean countries. I think you're the one wearing blinkers and filtering your 'evidence', chief. Categorically, every African woman is NOT obese, not even most of them, in my experience in those regions. And the examples I cite have little to do with shifting work or activity patterns. There is no leisure class and only a very small middle class in the regions I reference. If you're not in the ruling class: You work, or you die. Anyway: You're entitled to your beliefs and opinions, good luck!
Meme of choice: "Cheap carbohydrate-based processed foods". This is the meme of many health food advocates (which in itself is also a meme).
"every African woman is NOT obese". I believe you mean not 350 lbs BUT obese as we now define obesity. It is genetic with them. Some are not, more specifically some African tribes are not. And that is because of genetics. As you know having spent time in Africa the various native black Africans are very different genetically often with the only common visible trait being their skin color. A very intriguing genetic puzzle.

"The western world has an epidemic of obesity."
Well, I didn't know it was contagious but I have the cure. Just keep your mouth shut and you will not contract obesity. Darn! I forgot to mention this publication where you can learn more about being fat. Fat Studies is an academic journal in the field of scholarship that critically examines theory, research, practices, and programs related to body weight and appearance. Content includes original research and overviews exploring the intersection of gender, race/ethnicity, sexuality, age, ability, and socioeconomic status.
I don't think we need any research to notice that we rarely see any fat people over 70 y.o. and never see any fat people in their nineties.
Not true. As I stated before all of my aunts were obese and all of them lived into their 80's and my oldest cousin was obese and live to 92. Also now that I am 76 I visit the senior center. Most there are older than me and 100% of the women and 50% of the men are obese (by todays standards). THAT too is genetic. By that I mean the tendency to gain weight as you age.
Minnesota patients with lung injuries...leave it to the CDC to be the LAST to recognize that it was illegal THC use and not vaping that was the problem. How many people will they manage to get killed over this problem? They blew up their first Ebola misinformation campaign, they blew up their guns studies, I will never trust their vaccine studies, and they likely want a budget increase. Close the doors and let the military use the facilities.
Went to my atheist sister in laws this evening for late Thanksgiving dinner. Her son in law is quite Christian as am I. He said we aren't going to eat without saying the blessing are we which he does for the family. She responded no not in her house as she was the hostess and she makes the rules. I asked if she could step ni the kitchen so we could do a blessing. Promptly shut me down with I am the hostess and I make the rules. Even her daughters who were not raised in religion showed shock on their faces when she became kind of belligerent. After dinner we had to go around the table and tell what we were thankful for but that must be lost on her. Sad.
Before companies make a move out of California, they should make it a requirement that any employee who intends to relocate study the reasons for the move. Otherwise they bring their same political ideology with them which starts to infest the new State. Texas is a perfect example of California progressives moving in.
"Black Friday Shopping Frenzy BREAKS ALL RECORDS – Tops $4 Billion for First Time!"
"Alarmists Propose Rebranding ‘Climate Change’ for Greater Shock Value" Black Friday has moved to Canada (and Europe!) now too. I made the error of dropping by the Bayshore shopping mall here in Ottawa last Friday evening. It was crammed to the rafters with bargain-seekers. I could barely find a parking spot on the periphery because of the rows and rows of SUVs. And I had an epiphany. Forget Greta and the climate cult: I wouldn't want to be the one to tell that Bayshore mob that the "climate emergency" means they will have to sacrifice all their consumer goods. (I might add that the younger "caring" generation of Greta's peers was well represented at that shopping mall, rolling around in packs looking for the best deal on just the right clothes, shoes, mobile phones and devices.) |
