We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

The Swan 48

The Swan 48 from the 1970s is an iconic blue water sailboat, perfect for trans-Atlantic races (try not to bump into a whale and break your rudder) or for sailng to Bermuda. 2 people can sail her, but she requires extra hands for racing. It's a lot of boat for day-sailing, but people do it.




Here's the new Swan 48 - less beautiful but quicker.

I crewed on a Beneteau Oceanis 38 for five Halifax races. A good friend did the same on a Swan 54. At the finish of the first race, while hanging round the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, he gave me a tour of the Swan - what a gorgeous and comfortable boat! We, on the Beneteau, might as well have been on a stripped out J-boat, the comparison was that stark.

I’d take a metric J with pipe berths over the others. Fast, light, easy to sail, clean, and maintain. Of course, I don’t have the budget for it, I sail a '79 Paceship 26.

I once delivered a J-105 from Coscob to Marblehead. Two guys on board—we only unrolled enough Genny to make a working jib. We averaged 11 knots for the whole length of Long Island Sound, 99 miles in nine hours, with 15-20 kt wind a bit aft of the beam and a 4-5 ft following sea—in a 35 ft boat. Similar speed across Rhode Island Sound. We had to beat a bit up Buzzards Bay, then after the canal, one long tight reach to Mhead light—but hull speed or better all the rest of way. Those are fast boats.

I’ve done similar trips in Frers boats (quite a few in the similar-sized Frers 37), they are comfy, even in a storm, but they don’t handle like a dinghy the way the Johnstones do.

‘79 Paceship! A great boat. Alas, one of the victims of the AMF diversification binge. Harley-Davidson escaped but Paceship could not.

I find the new boat profoundly ugly, especially when compared with the graceful Olin Stevens designed older one. The same goes for America's Cup boats.

I appreciate the new boats being faster but doubt they offer the quality sailing experience characteristic of Stevens's boats.

faster, bragging rights, ugly but fast, butt ugly but really fast - is that all there is? The old Swan is a gem of the first order, and Olin Stevens was a first order class act.

Oh, come now -- the ocean is 100% trustworthy.

You can absolutely trust that it will be surprisingly indifferent to your presence; even when you expect it to object. Then, without warning it will try to kill you. Especially if you've let your guard down.

Rather like being locked in a room with a Bengal tiger.
