We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
“Never before in all our history have these forces [the media and the opposition party] been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me—and I welcome their hatred."
BS. Some Republican owned media were against him, but who reported on his secrets? No one. Even his semi-public secret of needing a wheelchair was not trumpeted.
You really need to read the whole essay to get what Steve H is driving at. The FDR quote is like one of those videos where somebody wanders around a campus filming reactions to a quote from Obama or some other Democrat but attributes it to Trump. The point is not whether reporting on FDR was truthful or not at that time. The point is that FDR and many other Democrats have made statements like this, and said Republicans were unAmerican, and nobody in the press found them the least bit outrageous or distasteful either then or now.
