Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

I'm for as much immigration as the economy can take, too. It's just that we can't do that without coming to grips with the welfare state and the need for assimilation. By assimilation, I certainly don't mean the eradication of culture, but I do mean the need to learn English and adopt the Constitution and the system it embodies. Beyond that, bring your culture and by all means let everyone see it and adopt whatever parts of it they find valuable over time. Keep your culture as intact as is consistent with finding jobs, supporting your families, and taking up the burden of citizenship. We've had hundreds of years of that kind of immigration, which I support fully.
So Will is for a wall. He puts a limit on how much immigration he wants and in order to do that there must be a method of control.
But I find it a bit distasteful that he seems to distill immigration to a fiscal issue when it is so much more than that. People used to accuse Republicans of being green eyeshades wearing accountants when the deficit was an issue (that seems like an age ago). I guess that was really true for him. I am for zero immigration. I think we should end immediately all new citizenship and anyone here who is not a citizen should be sent home. Begin a search for illegals and deport them. End all immigration forever, period. We don't need them, we can't afford them and they do us all harm and not just the welfare.
I know some will disagree. Fine, step up and all of you who approve of immigration fund the schools, lost jobs, welfare, medical care and pay damages for the crimes and murders committed by immigrants. I'm tired of paying for it. Bill Nye the Science Guy:
1) Climate change bad. 2) Orange Man bad. 3) Creationism bad. 4) Sex robots good. OK, I have a pet peeve. I got a check from a canceled insurance policy for $82.03. I went to my credit union to cash it. The young lady at the counter asked "do you want your three cents?". So, it's not the first time I've heard this but seriously at a bank or credit union??? Yes! I want all the money that is due me. I told the young lady that everyone over 50 will answer that, yes! I want my pennies.
But what is this? A generation X thing? Laziness? anti-penny? WHY do they ask this? Would they ask if the change was 3 nickles or 3 dimes? I am so tired of being asked if I want my change. Make them a counteroffer to round it up a few pennies, and if you can, get a photo of the cashier's face. Ought to be good for a few laughs.
I am 66 and I always turn down the pennies before they even ask. I recall someone coming on the Merv Griffin Show 50 years ago advocating for the discontinuation of the penny, and it's only worth a tenth of that now. We should be discontinuing all coinage except the quarter. Useless.
I suspect that pennies will be gone within a few years. On one of my overseas trips (not sure which one, maybe Australia) pennies were removed from circulation and the stores would round up or down to the next nickel. I'm OK with getting rid of pennies, I agree that they are almost worthless. (Actually the copper in a penny is worth a couple of cents.) But as long as they have them I want them in change when they are due. I still pick up a penny from the ground when I see one and now that I'm 75 that isn't as easy as it looks.
I seem to remember John Edwards promising to cure cancer during his presidential run.
Left unsaid: there will be no cure for cancer, unless Joe Biden is elected. And Trump is the one with ethics issues? Re race science. On another blog someone was claiming that since all humans have the same genes race does not exist. I responded that all dogs have the same genes so does that mean different breeds of dogs don't exist?
I am a proud 'Scotsman'. My family immigrated here in 1774. Where I grew up there were no celebrations of Scottish heritage so I adopted our brothers, the Irish, to celebrate. Who knows I'm probably part Irish too. BUT having said that I think the problem of race comes into play when the individual and the group of a particular race choose to separate and delineate themselves and their race.
For example: Even as a proud Scotsman I spend zero time day to day thinking about it and acting on it. It is simply something that occasional comes up. But many races and the people of those races make their race the number one thing that concerns them and it guides their actions and their impressions of things in life. They see racism where none exists and they practice racism in their everyday life AND they feel justified in doing it because of the perceived racism they imagine. Because of this they create and by their actions 'demand' racism. Because it must continue as it is part of their culture and expectation. To me it's like arguing that there's no such thing as a mountain, because you can't draw a simple line saying where its boundaries are. Every mountain is different: some are isolated while some merge into ranges. That doesn't mean anyone whose brain hasn't been turned to mush by ideology can't identify a peak, give it a convenient name, and distinguish it from other peaks. Is one mountain better than another? Are mountains better than valleys? These are silly questions.
Obviously any semi-coherent group with shared ancestry that's stayed somewhat separate from other groups will have distinct racial characteristics on average. Equally obviously, that doesn't mean one race is superior to another in any particular way, let alone overall. Natural selection produces results that are suited for particular conditions. The conditions change over space and time. Selective advantage is not a moral or spiritual judgment; it's not even a permanent practical judgment. Good analogy. The difficulty comes because IQ is one of the easiest measurable differences among the races, and the people who are most obsessed with IQ are the ones attacking the fairly straightforward science about that. Many of them say they disagree with IQ as a measurement (separate issue), but that is exactly the type of intelligence they value and think themselves superior people because of it. Thus they project that anyone who believes the numbers in front of them must be asserting superiority. I'm certainly not. Intelligence is very nice and useful, but it's not in my top ten measures of human worth.
In all fairness athletic a ability is also different between races. I have played basketball for years and with and against black teams and there is little doubt that blacks are better at basketball. Baseball and softball it's a tie. I do suspect part of this is culture, Blacks identify with basketball and they grow up playing it and judging themselves and others on that skill. But part of it is body type, that is statistically there are more blacks over 6'4" (or 6'7") than any other race and height is a natural asset in basketball.
I also agree with indyjonesouthere, that "the cultural differences are even more profound". Sadly I believe that IQ suffers because of those cultural differences. An example of that: I spent 20 years in the military. I have known hundreds of black men many as friends and some I had as room mates. With very few exceptions when it was just me and my black friend we got along great and he acted "intelligent" (for lack of a better measure). But when there were multiple blacks involved it was the cultural norm to act "black"; poor English, making fun of multi-syllable words, acting uninterested in work or school/learning, etc. They all knew the difference between "axe" and "ask" but when there were two or more blacks in the conversation it was always "axe". I have always felt that they were trolling us whites and using black English to separate "them from us" and reinforcing stereotypes (both theirs and ours). Where I am going with this is that I acknowledge that scientifically it can be proven that blacks have a lower IQ as a race than almost every other race, I am positive some of that, perhaps most of that is the result of their culture which forces them to "act black" and reject "white". IMHO if black culture and black parents were the same as Asian culture and parents the IQ difference would almost disappear. There are definite race differences but I think the cultural differences are even more profound.
RE: the 9/11 victims compensation fund.
I am 100% behind the government's paying for medical care for any first responder harmed in the 9/11 effort. But having seen this play over the years it is obvious that the fund pays out to anyone who was "there" regardless of what their medical condition is or what caused it. If I'm a firefighter and a life long smoker and get lung cancer at age 65 should the 9/11 fund pay all my bills and give my family money? I assume that every retired or disabled (on the job) first responder already has medical insurance. So, what than is the 9/11 fund supposed to do that his insurance doesn't do? I think this is about cash in the pocket and not about health care for first responders. Lovers Reunited: Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Holding William Barr and Don McGahn in Contempt Must Be Just the Beginning: Congress is HIGHLY contemptible. re Not The Onion: Biden Promises To Cure Cancer If Elected
Didn't 0bama promise to cure cancer if elected?? Cancer? Pfft, that’s beneath his skill set. He promised to heal the planet, stop the rise of the oceans.
No, Obama's shtick was that the oceans would cease to rise the the planet would begin to heal.
Why do we need a cure for cancer if the world is ending in 12 yrs anyway?
This is what I don't "get" about the LGBTQ pride thing.
https://freenorthcarolina.blogspot.com/2019/06/louisville-ky-mayor-declares-june-10-17.html If you look at the picture any normal person could only conclude that it is a comedy and not real OR everyone there is mentally ill and needs serious help. How and why do we integrate/accept this into society? Is it even possible or are we kidding ourselves and even if it is possible WHY? Why subject children to this environment/spectacle??? “In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is...in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.”
