Here's a pro tip for CNN, and for the rest of us: When someone claims that a fact is indisputable, it means it is very disputable, but they don't want to try. This is true even of decent organisations. It's what people say when they stop thinking.

I would like to see the evidence of the multiple thousands-to-one ration of hate crimes and evidence of the damage to individuals and communities. Show me the numbers.

Asking for a friend: Is it a "Hate Crime" if I say to someone, "I reeeeaaaallllly hate you!"? ... Or, does the vocal invective require an accompanying action or plot or threat to rise to the level of actual crime, even though the original statement clearly intended to express hate, while the motivations of the action, plot or threat could easily be faked? Is hate, in and of itself, a crime? I, for one, consider the establishment of "hate crime" as a category to be treading on fairly specious legal ground... But then, I don't play a lawyer, or Jussie Smollett, on TV...

Is not the root level of all crime, a derivative of hate? I don't know of a single instance of aggression, one human against another, done in the name of love. Well, wait a minute: I love your car, therefore I am going to steel it. I love America, and Trump sucks, therefore I am going to make it look like two Trump supporters mugged me. CNN tells me that there is a lot of hate from Trump supporters, and I love America, therefore I need to create a hoax hate crime to show how bad the hate is. Wow.

No. Hate is not a crime. Assaulting someone because you hate them as an individual is a crime, but not a hate crime. It's only a hate crime if you attack someone because of their race, ethnicity, religion, or other protected classification. That's because such an attack is considered an attack on the entire group.

So, if you attack someone because you hate Muslims, then that would be a hate crime, even if you are mistaken about whether the victim was a Muslim or not. The motivation, as well as the underlying crime, have to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
