We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Thirteen years in the making, the American Psychological Association (APA) released the newly drafted “Guidelines for Psychological Practice for Boys and Men.” Backed by 40 years of science, the APA claims, the guidelines boldly pronounce that “traditional masculinity” is the cause and consequence of men’s mental health concerns. Masculine stoicism, the APA tells us, prevents men from seeking treatment when in need, while beliefs rooted in “masculine ideology” perpetuate men’s worst behaviors—including sexual harassment and rape. Masculine ideology, itself a byproduct of the “patriarchy,” benefits men and simultaneously victimizes them, the guidelines explain. Thus, the APA committee advises therapists that men need to become allies to feminism. “Change men,” an author of the report stated, “and we can change the world.”
Twelve Psychologists respond to the APA "guidelines" and the thinking behind them.
Quillette is doing some phenomenal work that you don't see anywhere else, or, at least anywhere that I know of.
Nice to see people lining up to call bullshit when they see it; too bad there aren't that many brave souls out there, and I'm sure the SJWs will try to dismiss these guys as defenders of toxic masculinity. Good luck with that; I get the feeling these cats don't take shit lying down.
Even these twelve said they don't believe the backlash was a result of crass political motives. Even the response is bullshit. Gramsci and his fellow travelers have plowed a trench through all the institutions. Are there any institutions left that even have low T or do all of them have no T.
Isn't this the same group that decided that homosexuality was normal and not a mental health issue. I suppose next they will decide that allowing parents to medically and surgically change their toddlers gender isn't child abuse.
Imagine you are trapped in a burning car and the door is stuck, who do you want to show up to help you? Pajama boy or John Wayne? I would want the most toxic masculinity afflicted male trying to save me from the burning car.
Psychology is, by no rational definition, a 'science'. That is one reason why there are so many 'schools' of it, all diversely reflecting what are merely opinions. None of it is falsifiable or replicable. Can one confirm a 'psychological' problem with a blood-test?
When I attended university some decades ago, the Psychology Department was in the Arts Block, along with the Fiction Department. This is where it belongs.
I'd prefer to remain stoic than listen to their bullshit. If I have any spiritual problems, it is to a priest I would turn. Psychologists don't 'cure' mental illness (whatever that is), they instill and enable it.
Hmm. Seems we've heard a similar trope before about changing men.
Let's see, who was it who said something much like that? Hmm...Oh, got it! It was the Soviets!
They tried to do something very much like that - the New Soviet Man. They gave it a go for about 74 years and couldn't make it work, and they had far more draconian means of doing so to accomplish their goal. They failed, and then the Soviet Union fell.
Does the APA really think they can accomplish what a totalitarian state with equally capable psychologists/psychiatrists couldn't? Do they not see the possibility of the same result?
How many 10's of thousands of psych professionals are there in universities, schools, business HR, and private practice? And the people in this country are worse adjusted now than ever before. The APA psych assn. describes psych illnesses but do they have a definition of a well adjusted person as a bench mark? Or is psych science just a post-modern relativist philosophy? -- "I know a psych problem when I see it." Beta males are always envious of Alpha males.
