We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"There are men, in all ages, who mean to exercise power usefully; but who mean to exercise it. They mean to govern well; but they mean to govern. They promise to be kind masters; but they mean to be masters."
And this is where Lord Acton's adage about power corrupting and absolute power corrupting absolutely comes in. One of my little pet peeves is hearing people refer to Hitler or Stalin or Mao as "a monster" when monsters are - by definition - inhuman and yet this seems to be the way human beings behave when they have power. I have no doubt that these people did not think themselves evil, I am sure that they thought what they did was all for the best. But that's what happens when you are completely, 1000% sure that you are right and that anyone who argues with you is wrong and you have the power to impose your will on them. There are only 3 reasons anyone would argue with you - they are too stupid to see how brilliant you are, they have some crazy ideas about how the world works, or they really know that you are right but for their own evil purposes try to convince others that you are wrong. So what can you do with these obdurate people? Well, stupid people get sent off to re-education camps, crazy people get locked up in psychiatric prisons and evil people get a bullet to the back of the head. What else can you do? And once you've gotten rid of all the people who fail to appreciate your plans for a perfect society, we'll have a Paradise here on Earth! Sigh. If only everyone would just do as they're told by their betters....Isn't that right, Mrs. Clinton?
This is why the core of my politics is my recoiling in horror from forcing anyone to do anything if I can conceive of any alternative. I'm good with the kind of "force" that inheres in a free market, i.e., you can't take my stuff without a fight or a bargain, so you're forced to pay attention to what would motivate me freely to trade with you. I'm also OK with forcing you to deal with the consequences of your own decisions, even if you're looking pretty pitiful as a result--though I'll make exceptions there.
