We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Northern Flicker migration



A splendid North American bird in the woodpecker clan. Very fond of eating ants, too.  Noticed an influx of them in the past two weeks and learned that they are in the semi-migratory category. Their northernmost breeders move south a bit.


We must have lots of anthills in our grass.

We had a couple of them around here at the cottage (we're in the Ottawa Valley) about two weeks ago but not since, so that would fit your note about moving south a bit.

Yes, they are splendid indeed!

And speaking of splendid members of the woodpecker clan, a perennial visitor to my feeders when we were living in London was the European Green Woodpecker. Look up images of that one on the net!

The little bastards can, do, and did, peck through OSB and light gauge aluminum to get at I don't know what.

Ruined aluminum fascia and stopped at the pressure treated wood.

Found unprotected OSB where I had removed an electrical round surface mount box to replace it, pecked through and built a nest in the Fiberglas insulation. Poked their evil little pointy beaked faces out at me when I walked up to the cottage porch. Sneered at me and only left when I pounded madly on the wall.
