Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Glad climate change is holding off. If it's real, we'll be much better equipped to deal with it in 2038. AI, better technologies. Can we not hear so much about it, then? The US is doing its bit, though not getting credit for it. As for the rest of the world, PJ O'Rourke wrote "There are over a billion people in China, and every one of them wants a Buick." We can add in India now.

I'd say the Indians are much more likely to achieve this than the Chinese if we can keep India and Pakistan from tossing around nukes. I may non't live to see it but it wouldn't surprise me that in another 40 years we'll be looking back and wondering what the fussing over the Chinese was all about, sort of like how the Japanese were going to take over the world in the 1980s. Assistant Village Idiot: Glad climate change is holding off.
Don't count on it. The study under discussion suggested otherwise. See Chen & Tung, Global surface warming enhanced by weak Atlantic overturning circulation, Nature 2018. ---Global warming hiatus for ~2 more decades?
Good, that'll give us (and nature) time to adapt ourselves to what the computer models tell us should be happening, while the real world stubbornly doesn't cooperate. ---‘Climate Change’ Will Kill Your Internet In 15 Years Or Something Yes, because humans CANNOT ever change anything that they've ever done. Reading the article and the messes it's derived from, it's clear that the 'journalists' writing the source material haven't even read something as basic as 'Tubes - A Journey to the Center of the Internet' by Blum, and apparently visualize the terminations of the undersea cables being barely above the tide line, and thousands of miles of fiber running along the coast buried in the sand for convenience... 4000 miles of fiber in danger? Well, that's about a month's worth of work by repair crews. It's scare-mongering click-bait. What I'm worried about is what we're going to do when we run out of whale oil.
The purpose of NATO is to make the cost of invading a NATO country so great that no one would do it. For those who say I don't want to defend Montenegro, you need to understand that by making this a talking point it increases the chances that you will indeed have to defend Montenegro. The world is a dangerous place and Russia does want to reoccupy Eastern Europe. We either stand up to them and convince them that we will fight or they will take one country after another until we must fight.
I understand Tucker's point, no parent wants to send their child to die halfway around the world to defend another country. But understand this; either we do it brazenly and openly with a treaty and a commitment or we get pulled into it long after the other side has the advantage. By golly, Montenegro for the Montenegroes!
Or something... Global Warming is a computer simulation game.
Climate is definition of weather patterns and as a definition does not change. There are a half dozen different climatic zone systems. Weather patterns are facts, Climate is an abstraction, a definition. Humans have evolved Environmental Manipulation as a Survival strategy. Evolution is the adaptation to a changing environment. Adapt or Die is the Imperative. Mr. Comey, one of us is unAmerican. I am going out on a limb to say that it isn't me, who will vote Republican. We will see what America does with your claims in the fall. My sense of it is that the more you and people like your fellow travelers at MSNBC tell me that Trump is the devil, the more people like me will show up to shout with our ballots. So feel free to insult us further.
"...a strip 40 miles west of Damascus snatched by Israel in 1967."
When I read such in the beginning para's of an article, I stop reading. There's someone essentially lying about a historical fact, that would, at the least, require deeper context for such an accusation. And their editor lets them get away with it. So, screw'em. Internet under water? Tides rise and fall waaaay more than a foot or two. In most places.
