We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

New England Real Estate: Dublin, NH

This nice summer cottage is for sale, with 20 acres. Dublin (year-round population 800 really nice people, summer pop 1400, also nice outdoorsy people), no drugs, no crime, no poachers - has plenty of lower-maintenance and less expensive places for sale.


I learned, over the years, that with houses (as with boats) you buy not what you can afford, but what you can afford to maintain.

And the time one spends, ie wastes, on maintenance needs to be part of the budgeted cost.

Contrary to myth, the time spent mucking about on a boat is absolutely not added back onto ones lifespan.

Can't comment further, must get out and gel-gloss the boat. Again.

I was surprised, in looking at real estate prices around my NE hometown, how many less inexpensive houses there were. But not inexpensive enough to lure me back to those winters.

Look around your present neighborhood. In mine, the bottom is rapidly falling out of sale prices, yet nothing reported so far in the local news. And, I'm in the go-go sun belt.

I get the impression that the world has moved beyond the "summering" lifestyle. The kids would all sit around glued to their devices for most of the day. They could have just stayed in New Jersey and saved the travel time.

Ah, but at least in Dublin, NH, bDMW, they would not be likely to experience the "cultural enhancement" they are likely to get in Joisey.

When I spent a year at Dartmouth, I leased a lovely home on 5 acres about half way between Hanover and Lyme. It was lovely but not well constructed. It cost me $400 a month to heat it in winter.

Here on the Gulf Coast, where we were smashed by a hurricane last year, I'm really seeing the difference between people who can afford their buildings and people who can't. You don't want to go through a hurricane lacking savings, insurance, and ideally a certain amount of physical vigor. There are many homes, stores, and piers that look pretty much as they did the week after the storm--no signs whether the owners ever will do anything about them. You'd be amazed how many people thought FEMA would step in and take the place of the insurance they didn't have.
