Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Artist of the Day: Arthur Rackham

Rackham (1886-1939) is considered the greatest illustrator of all time, illustrating Alice in Wonderland, Grimm's Fairy Tales, Peter Pan, and much more. This is Siegfried and Brunhilde from his Das Rheingold illustrations.

How can I call him underappreciated? Rockwell gets more attention in the US, because of his amazing eye for charm. Rackham goes for the mythic. Good stuff.

Don't forget N.C. Wyeth, those marvelous Deco illos for Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island, and some others.

I guess I would put Wyeth second to Rackham - aw, who needs to rank these guys? All wonderful, including Rockwell.

So so true. Each has a distinct power. But Rackham has, as Sally notes, an "eye for the mythic." Something that is kinda cultural, it seems....Rockwell is straight up, concrete, and to the heart. Wyeth also got that American distance from metaphor. Rackham connects with the mystic, re the Alice in Wonderland illustrations....
