Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Chefs and Servers Reveal the 15 Things They'd Never Order at a Restaurant.
They don't order soup. That may be good advice in the US. In Latin America, not so good advice. In many cheap cafes in Latin America, the standard meal is rice and beans with a bowl of soup. After a while, I found the rice and beans to be boring and tasteless- unless there was some hot sauce on the side. The soup was the tastiest part of the meal. In addition, it provided a safe source of water. My travels throughout South America 50+ years ago reflect what Gringo says, but I would bet the farm that today, every decent sized city in SA is as cluttered with US fast food joints as the US itself.
I haven't been south in about 15 years, but I doubt that US fast food joints have taken over. US fast food joints tend to be more expensive than the regular cafe- and way more expensive than a meal in the open air market. I have used Pollo Campero in Guatemala, which is a fast food joint that has expanded from Guatemala into the US and other countries. Prices were not that much different from the US- which means expensive in Guatemala.
QUOTE: Trump has his enemies dancing to his tune with 's-hole countries' comments ... But is "s‑‑‑‑‑‑‑" used in private any worse than then-V.P. Biden privately (but near a live microphone) calling Obamacare a "big [f‑‑‑‑‑‑] deal"? Uh, yeah, as only one of them was used to slur an entire continent. QUOTE: Both are vulgarisms stated in private that reached the public. It's private in the sense that a business meeting is private. If someone in a business meeting called Africa a "s-------", then yeah, it would be an issue for most any organization, especially when they and their partners have ongoing transactions with Africans and people of African descent. QUOTE: Life in Little Mogadishu in Minneapolis. Life in Hasidic New York So, Z collective/Borg, just which of those lovely countries , so slandered, are you moving to next week?
Oh, that's right! NONE OF THEM! ....since most do not even have running water or effective sewer systems as their SHI**Y dictators stole all the US aid sent to bring them basic sanitation and their citizens aren't smart enough to figure such things out for themselves! Your personal ignorance is not an argument. Lagos, Nigeria Johannesburg, South Africa Nairobi, Kenya Zimbabwe.
Somalia. Angola. Who's being ignorant, kiddiez? I'd say there's a lot of places in the US that would fill the shole description. In San Francisco, New Orleans, people may still be dancing in the streets, but in too many parts they're also crapping in the streets.
Chicago has many shole parts. Speaking thereof, Stilton Jarlsberg mentioned this week in the comment section of his blog (https://stiltonsplace.blogspot.com/) I pretty much wouldn't visit Chicago on a bet at this point. "Come for the Obama Library, Stay Because You're Dead!" OldFert: In San Francisco, New Orleans, people may still be dancing in the streets, but in too many parts they're also crapping in the streets.
Every city in America has its homeless. That doesn't make them sh...oles. San Francisco is nearly always rated one of the best cities to live in the U.S., cost being one of the mitigating factors — because so many people want to live there! And just what would you call those places, Z?
Deplorable? Irredeemable? Sometimes a shithole is a shithole. Too bad you don't like it, but it is interesting you'd take to defending them. Move there. Make them non-shitholes. Then get back to us. jimg: Deplorable? Irredeemable?
Irredeemable? Not even you are irredeemable. jimg: Too bad you don't like it, but it is interesting you'd take to defending them. Turns out that most American immigrants still had personal attachments to their their country of origin, their history, and their heritage, even when those countries have problems. Just because the Puritans fled religious persecution, or the Irish needed to emigrate due to famine, or Norwegians immigrated for a better life, doesn't mean they didn't still feel ties to their homelands. Nigerians make up a large proportion of immigrants to the U.S. from Africa. Most of them speak English, and many are highly educated. Yet most still feel attached their homeland, a country filled with passionate, hardworking, and creative people. Ah yes! Wow. Just wow.

It's so much easier to imagine your high-rise neighbors than it is to meet and get to know them.
Numbers and Math are racist: They must be, since everything else is racist. Animals are racist. Microbes are racist. Mushrooms are racist, and toadstools are even worse! Turkey's building a wall on the border with Iran: Walls are BAD, so Turkey's BAD. Then, logic tells me that gated communities are BAD. I...am horrified. Or something. "They must be, since everything else is racist."
I know. I mean, just yesterday I learned that shitholes are racist. Who knew? Highly recommend the Mike Rowe piece. Rebecca, her attitude are precisely what is wrong with modern society. The truth of the matter is, that 'right-wingers' are the most tolerant, acceptable people on earth. There is only one group that is constantly trying to tell people how to behave, and live their lives, under the full force of the law, or through bulling tactics of tying to shame people into compliance: The Left.
While it may be fun trying to imagine who's living in the high-rise, it's downright horrifying to imagine who's living in Mrs. Zachriel's basement (shudder).
Andrew Klavan has an excellent article on this shit storm

One of the problems the anti-Trumpers have is they jump onto any anti-Trump meme with both feet without though or care. Look at the smirk on Durbin's face as he spews his shithole comment. But the problem with this is that the internet has a long memory. Now all the foul mouthed comments that every politician, talking head, commenter and activist ever said will be compared with Trump's very simple, straight forward and 100% correct comment. All of the open mike comments, the comments made "in private", the mis-statements that were later retracted as though that wasn't what they meant at all. I predict Trump's 100% accurate description of these shithole nations will shine compared to Obama's coarse language that or MSM protected us from or Biden's foul mouth and even fouler handsy tendencies. I can picture Obama sitting in a bi-partisan meeting with congressmen flipping the bird at the Republicans because of his hate/racism/intolerance/whatever. I look forward to the Internet reminding us of all the insults, foul language and, yes, even racist talk from our Democrats. Bring it on... The problem I have with Trump's comment is that he's asking why we would want more immigrants from poor countries rather than rich countries when it should seem obvious people trying to get out of poor countries are demonstrating a recognition of their plight and a willingness to try to better themselves. Do we really want more educated intellectuals from socialist Scandinavian countries rather than immigrants who are attempting to flee the tender embrace of such learned idiots?
I would agree with your statement, but the democrats, as you know, want these poor people to stiffen up their voting rolls. They want to turn America into the same shithole that the immigrant left. For what ever reason, when these immigrants arrive here, they continue to vote for the same policies, the same type of politicians that created the shitholes that they are so desperately trying to leave. How about a moratorium on all immigration for 50 years or so. Let people assimilate, get used to their new country. Of course, we in America could help the assimilation process along by believing in our country, our way of life, or form of government. But half the people in this country don't believe in the goodness of America. They want the communist states of America. So we have irreconcilable differences.
Why not take a break from all immigration until we sort out what Americans want?
Lets simply make some non-negotiable requirement for all immigrants: No support from public funds of any kind for the next three generations. That is no welfare, college loans, housing, food stamps, medicaid, nothing. And they must speak English fluently and have a sponsor who is willing and able to insure their success once they are here. If they commit any felony in their lifetime they will be deported immediately. I'm sure there are more reasonable requirements but this is a good start.
Jerryskids: Do we really want more educated intellectuals from socialist Scandinavian countries rather than immigrants who are attempting to flee the tender embrace of such learned idiots?
It turns out that those "educated intellectuals from socialist Scandinavian countries" are among the happiest people on Earth. Only a few hundred Norwegians immigrated to the U.S. last year. In any case, the U.S. still does business with Africans and descendants of Africans, so exhibiting such racist ignorance is unwise. Zzzzz:
It turns out that those "educated intellectuals from socialist Scandinavian countries" are among the happiest people on Earth. Well yeah, when they're not being mugged and raped by Muslim refugees from shithole countries in Africa and the Middle East. Re: Turkey to complete wall on Iranian border by spring 2019
Those stupid Turks! Don't they listen to leftist? Walls don't work! "Soup of the day. It’s just yesterday’s leftovers."
Well, what's wrong with that? Of course math is racist and sexist. I took advanced calculus in college and after being sworn to secrecy I learned that Newton actually invented the calculus just to confuse and frustrate women and people of color.
