Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re: CNN's Wolf Blitzer showers praise on Trump for opening up immigration meeting to press
I don't think Trump was opening up the meeting to the press, he was opening up the meeting to the American people and using the press against itself. Where was the wild and crazy senile old illiterate fool who knows nothing at all about issues and policies with the 8-second attention span the press has been telling us inhabits the Oval Office? Without saying a word (so far as I know - I haven't heard yet what he's been tweeting this morning) Trump demonstrated that the press has been disseminating fake news yet again about his dangerous unfitness for office. And got the press itself to get out that message. Re Luttwak on bombing North Korea.
Luttwak is a war criminal for exactly the same reasons that Goering was a war criminal. He continually promotes going to war with countries that are not attacking us. This is the Nuremberg definition of a war crime. A very large number of people in the Department of Defense, State Department and intelligentsia are de fact war criminals, and they would be in prison if we had a justice system in this country. Many people do not understand the risks here. Our dealings with the Norks for the last 30 years or so has guaranteed the situation we find ourselves in today. NK is an unstable government led by an unstable leader with nukes and ICBMs and they will use them. We have made a pact with the devil and our part of this pact is we accept the fact that at some time NK will nuke one or more or a dozen American cities. It might be Honolulu, Anchorage, Seattle, San Francisco, LA, maybe NY City or DC. If we don't find some way to stop them that is their trajectory. We knew this in the 90's when we could have easily stopped them and we knew this in the 2000's when we could have stopped them without a nuclear event by either side. Now it is too late for that. The most viable option on the table is a nuclear strike against their nuclear facilities and a followup conventional battle to take out their considerable artillery and military. Seoul will not survive. If NK decides on a first strike there will be a simultaneous attack on Seoul once the ICBMs are launched. Conversely if we attack NK they will unleash their artillery on Seoul and most likely try to attack/nuke Japan as well.
All of this is to say there are no good choices but that the "best" choice would appear to be a massive attack on NK in an attempt to prevent them from using nukes. The mistakes in all of this were already made by Trump's predecessors. The next mistake will be to do nothing. It is likely that in the next 4-8 years NK will harden their nuclear capability and expand it making any kind of a first strike less likely to succeed. So, it is time to bomb NK. Alternatively we could curl up in the fetal position claiming foolishly that defending our country from an existential threat is a war crime and apologize to the people of Honolulu, Anchorage, Seattle, San Francisco, LA, maybe NY City or DC ahead of time while they still are alive. Meanwhile, the North is opening up dialogue with the South, here comes GWTW nuclear missiles. I usually enjoy reading your take on subjects, but this take is madness. Do you think China is just going to sit idle, while you wipe North Korea off the map? What this kind of thinking will unleash is a total nuclear war. There will be no winners. I’m sure in some corner of the globe some humans will survive, but for what?
We find ourselves in another stalemate. Just like with the Soviet Union. We need to have faith that what is right will prevail. We are to impatient for life to roll along, answers will be found. The North will do nothing more than bloviate, as has been thier custom. Our mistakes in the past have been giving them something for nothing. Don’t exacerbate the problem with a first strike. Perhaps you misunderstand. I do not "want" to go to war with NK. But I do think that NK is a loose cannon unlike Russia and China (not too sure about China but that's a different story). NK is going to use their nukes unlike all the other nuclear powers in the world since 1945 (I think Iran will to and Pakistan is also a good bet). NK may well use then on SK. Or on Japan who they hate. Or on Guam (why Guam because they can succeed, it will piss off the U.S. and right now they cannot, probably, hit the continental U.S.). I think the odds are better than even that NK will use nukes in the next 5-10 years.
Now here is the "the river": Do we want to protect/prevent any and all of those possibilities AND do we have the balls? Because "it is time". Not two years or 10 years or 20 years ago when we had other non-nuclear options. Not in 2, 5 or 10 years when KN will have something approaching MAD (mutually assured destruction). The time to save millions, tens of millions of lives is now. The past is past and we can't go back and have a do over. The future from this point forward will get worse. I get your point! I don't like it either. AND we aren't gonna do it. Instead we are going to commit to future hellfire and brimstone on Honolulu, Anchorage, Seattle, San Francisco, LA, maybe NY City or DC. AND when that happens... you will get my point. Bob Sykes, you forget:
1. We are technically still in state of war with North Korea and have been since 1950; all that was in place was a ceasefire. So it is not a question of warmongering, we are already at war with North Korea; it is just a question of what do we do. 2. Kim Jong Un has repeatedly repudiated the ceasefire since he came to power after his father's death and declared NK is in a state of war with the U.S. 3. Kim has repeatedly threatened us with nuclear attack. 4. Kim now has functioning nuclear weapons that can reach Guam, Hawaii and the mainland United States. 5. The U.S. would be justified under international law of nuking NK tomorrow. I think the biggest reason not to do so is that the ultimate determination of what to do should be S. Korea's. My Korean friends tell me Kim is just bluffing because he is not threatening S. Korea. They are nowhere as worked up as we are. If he actually threatened to attack S. Korea it would be a different matter. This is not to say there haven't been incursions and some bad incidents (such as the naval ambush along the Northern Limit Line a few years ago). There is also some concern the current president (a well-known lefty and former radical with ideological and family ties to North Korea) might just be a stalking horse for the North and will try sell out S. Korea's interests to the North. The former president Park Geun Hye was much better for us and a hardliner with N. Korea, but she was removed from office for corruption and put in jail. Some of my friends think that was also partly organized by N.Korea sympathizers, but her friends did get caught with their hands in the cookie jar and it was shown she did nothing to stop it, and there was a lot of resentment against her by the poor way she and the Korean government handled the Suweol ferry disaster. Food pantries on every NY campus? Tell those kids to use their limited money for food and not alcohol, drugs and video games. Nothing like making sure they all are good little socialists.
Gov. Cuomo says this free food must be “stigma-free.” Damn! Just when “gluten-free” is accepted as a sham, the Democratic Progressives come up with another victim allergy.
It's always good to read about someone in Hamas killing himself, but the story appears to be a year old.
Yeah, early for the anniversary but what the heck, it DOES make a fella feel good.
On the Obama library: Maybe he can hire an architect named Albert and a filmmaker named Leni and there will be massive marble buildings and lots and lots of searchlights.
Hitler demonized Jews. The modern Nazi playbook is to demonize anyone who doesn't agree with their orthodoxy. White males who are openly Christian and conservative are the new Jews in this worldview.
We are, hopefully, witnessing the most historic undermining of the Colonies since 1815. The UK has never given up on controlling the Americas as their serfdom.
Surprise! We just might have an executive who understands the Bill of Rights and The Constitution. Individual rights. Rule of Law. Kudos to the Bundys. Colonies? 1815?
The US had already been an independent country for over 30 years by then. "The UK has never given up on controlling the Americas as their serfdom." What on earth do you think you're saying here? Don't know what the reference is in reference to here, but the British maintained and occupied forts in the Great Lakes areas (now Michigan, Wisconsin, and Western Illinois) until after the War of 1812, which ended in 1814. They also had a policy of not recognizing the naturalization of British subjects not born in North America to American citizenship, and thus maintained the right to impress sailors who could not prove their place of birth into British Naval service. This was particularly true of those who may had deserted from British naval service previously.
Of course the fledgling US also had a tendency to interfere and cause incursions into what was then British Canada and Newfoundland, as well as pretty eagerly shelter and grant at least provisional citizenship to British military deserters, so the most accurate statement is that the two countries tended to not respect each other's territorial and citizenship integrity. The Bundy's are incredibly stupid, they committed numerous felonies and lucked out because the prosecution made stupid mistakes. But I am confident that the Bundy's are indeed stupid and they will once again trespass, occupy, or threaten law enforcement with weapons and sooner or later they will self destruct.
Hamas explosives expert blows himself up.
As a Christian, I hate people dying unsaved. But on the other hand, there is a saying in the South that "he needed killin'" and it certainly seems to apply here. Liberals want all to live in harmony, but their actions just feeds their own insanity. https://youtu.be/kVPN0w1BWQw
I'd favor regime change instead. China could easily do that" But they won't. So then what?
Strange that Mueller is hardly even talked about anymore on some of the more liberal-loving networks. Now it's all about Trump's mental fitness for office. Guess the Russia, Russia, Russia investigation is not exactly panning out how they hoped? Whooops!
Can you say "higher taxes", boys and girls? Yes, I KNEW you could.
Whiteness-informed civility? All-righty! White Riots gonna be So cooooolllllllll. Maybe I misunderstood.
Cis-Culture: I identify as a black lesbian, so you dast not deny me!!!!111111!!!!! obama library should be in Jackson Park.
Look at the map. The park already has the museum of science and industry and on the southern tip, La Rabida children's hospital. It has access via Lake Shore Dr. and also via the 63 St. bus. It will extend the University's presence and the Midway Plaisance into the Park and bring scholars and visitors. Washington Park on the western edge would be isolated from the University (and most visitors). It 's the park where the U of C track team used to train: the joke was that there never was a slowest runner on the team, as these guys were picked off and mugged. |
