CAN YOU REALLY BE ADDICTED TO SEX?

"Treating" sex addiction has become a profitable industry.  But is there really such a thing?


I would answer No. The sex drive is strong in most people. Bill Clinton did not have a "stronger more manly sex drive" than other people; he was just a predator and exploiter. Manly men don't do that even if they want to because the key to "manly" is self-mastery, not self-indulgence or mastery of others - especially women. 


Are there badly-behaved people, criminal people, boorish people, and people with poor self-control out there?  Of course, as in all areas of life besides sex. 


Related,  THE PURGE OF THE DEVIANTS MAY GO TOO FAR. Regarding that piece, I'd remove the terms "deviants" and "pervs" that I keep hearing. Historically, rich and powerful men were free to use women as they wished to fulfill their fantasies without consequence. The Kennedys were famous for that, as were British royalty.  I'd prefer to talk about decent and indecent behavior except in the cases of assault or rape, in which cases I would discuss criminality.

It is a mistake to conflate all of the possible things a person could do that "could" be labeled sexual harassment or sexual abuse. Is the inadvertant hand on the back in a photo op equal to forcing an employee to have sex or lose their job? Everything seems to get labeled in the worst way regardless of what the actual facts are. This presents a problem for the victim and the advocate. That is after being fooled a number of times by false claims and exaggerated claims that were hyped up to win big settlements the public begins to doubt these stories. The penchant by all involved to limit the actual facts that come out contributes to the doubts. IMHO if you cannot give me anything but the wild ass claim, no facts, no details, and you hire Gloria Allred then I don't believe you. Simple as that. If these things must be tried in the court of opinion then we need more evidence not more secrets and double speak.

One case in point; when Justice Thomas was first accused of sexual harassment I was leaning towards believing the charges. It was only when I actually heard and saw Anita hill testify that I knew she was lying. Some may disagree that she was lying but that misses the point. Without the details and the opportunity to see her and put some context into the accusations you cannot arrive at an informed conclusion. Otherwise whatever we believe or don't believe is really our personal biases coloring our decision and often helped along by intentional misinformation from the accuser, the lawyers and the MSM.

Some people have worse impulse control than others. I think it's hard-wired, and it may actually be related to some elements of charisma and charm, but if others want to chalk it up to environment, it doesn't matter much for this discussion.

That trait may be related to addiction, but it's not the same thing as addiction.

Not sure about wiring and impulse control. No 2 year-old has impulse control. Self-restrained has to be acquired, often with great effort, bad consequences, and/or decent role models.

It doesn't help to conflate the problem of poor self-control with addiction. The word addiction has almost no useful meaning left. I suppose you can still use it to describe a compulsive behavior that no longer grants any genuine pleasure or benefit and is actively harmful, but we've nearly gotten to the point of labeling any counterproductive or unwelcome behavior as addiction, as if that added anything to a discussion.

I beg to differ. We can quibble about the meaning of "mastery", but "mastery" of at least one woman is a definite key to what makes a man "manly".

Some of this behavior, like masturbating in front of an unwilling woman, is pervert behavior. I cannot imagine a normal man with a normal sex drive wanting to do this. Just as rape is violence, not sex, such behavior is a sick attempt to humiliate and violate.

I'm tired of every bad habit or compulsion being called "addiction". Compulsion isn't enough. No withdrawal, no addiction.

The disease theory of addiction is probably at the root of all of this. People call their misbehavior "addiction" and then they can claim they need treatment for a disease instead of punishment.
