Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

That's not entirely inconsistent with the way some schools are run. When my daughter was in grade school, my wife saw one of the teachers complained to the principal that some of her students were beyond her control. The principal chastised her that it was the students' classroom and she was just a guest in their classroom.
Delightful - skewering everything that is wrong in our public education school systems today in under 10 minutes!
My daughter spent her first few years in a parochial school in a small country, where the best schools are the ones that are run by the nuns. Guess what they teach? Grammar and Math, with Discipline. "Sir and Ma'am" type discipline, plus school uniforms. The students are sharp, well-behaved, and feel proud of their accomplishments.
When we moved back to the US we were in a large college town where the college is a major university. Lots of college professor's kids in my daughter's high school classes. By virtue of the quality of her schooling 'til then, she was able to advance a year without missing a beat. This is a low crime-rate, suburban environment in a conservative Texas town. My daughter was appalled regularly, almost daily, at the extent of disrespect, open cussing, acting out and general misbehavior but worse, at the level of poor scholarship on open display, with little or no consequence. The courses had been dumbed down to a pitiful content. The teachers were powerless; with a few shining exceptions, most of them didn't mind it one bit. There were fights in the lunch room and assaults on teachers in the classroom. There was no disciplinary action of these transgressions unless physical violence was involved, I mean -none-. And once there was violence, there were token suspensions and no active engagement of the parents to confront them with their parental responsibilities, or to agree objectives for improvement on the student's part. These are the types of behaviors being cultivated by our teacher's unions and supported by the school boards. It is lowest-common-denominator education at its very basest. Since these behaviors have become the norm for at least 2 generations in this country, we are now bearing the fruit of it with adults in open society. I think our educational system has lost its sense of purpose, and has also lost its understanding of the value and power of education, all while becoming an industry of administrative budgets and salaries. I say all this coming from a family of school teachers and university professors (brother, mother, grandparents). The state of education is beyond appalling, it's an ongoing threat to the well-being of our society. The first rule, when you find yourself in a hole, is to stop digging. Only it ain't no joke. In social services, where the individual bears no personal responsibility, speaking up against their pathological behavior will brand you as uncaring--as I learned at my last evaluation. ("We would like to see you care more.")
Great right up to the scene where conservative media talking heads start trashing the teacher. "This teacher, this Liberal elitist ... tells this student his answer is wrong." The next MSM talking head "if you hate America that much why don't you go teach in Commie France."
Excuse me? The MSM lean Right? Really? And you think this is the Rights attitude toward math? And that it's Conservatives running and ruining our public schools? Maggie's Farm, did you even watch this video? Who do you think owns "alternative math"? It's called Common Core, and it's the invention of America-hating Liberal Elitists, not America loving Conservatives. Nice try at projection by whoever made this video, but sorry. Liberal Elitists YOU own this "alternative math" crap. And Maggie's Farm, come on, you can do better at weeding out such Typical SJW fantasy BS. I noticed that, as well, but I wasn't concerned with it. The whole point of the video is correct, and labeling her views (which are on the whole quite conservative) as "liberal elitism" is just a jab at the media in general. It seems in the video's universe, everything is upside down, and this is borne out by the ending in which the conservative winds up winning over the liberal elitism by using their 'math' against them.
Couple observations about my kids' K-5 school.
Report cards, which we just received again, are almost entirely useless. They are designed to obfuscate the gulf between good students and failing students and teachers have learned to game them bc they're being used to rate their performance. So my kids who were exceeding standards at the end of last year are mysteriously back down to "progressing" this fall. The tachers need to show progress during the year, so here we are again with deflated grades in the first making period again. The school has a near 100% promotion rate, but an overall "F" rating. I'm not sure if this is a case of moving trouble kids to the next grade to get rid of them, or if it's fear of being called racist for suggesting a kid should be held back. I suspect it's mostly the latter. The staff is almost entirely 23-45 year old white women and they are obviously intimidated by some of the diversity parents. The demographic of the teachers has other unwanted effects, like boys being punished for being boys. The bias in favor of the girl students is almost as obvious as their fear of the black families. Can't blame them too much, they're from the 'burbs and have been indoctrinated to believe "racism" is the worst thing they could ever be accused of. Having said that, they're trying. It's mostly the lousy home life and lack of fathers holding kids back. Not much the school can do to fix feral kids. See Bill Whittle How the Critical Theory Ruined a Generation.
"The KKK isn't afraid of being called racist. Hitler wasn't ashamed of being called anti Semite." Loved her ending. To bad the room camera wasn't on to nail Mom for physical violence. Interesting they chose to use conservative caricatures in the television segment. I guess that's necessary to make it over the "indie" festival barrier.
All in all, she should have chosen the better part of valor, left the kids to die and simply put the math on youtube where kids with a desire to learn would find it. Stop trying to save those who won't save themselves. Stupid me. I watched the video then read the comments. I didn't get the vibe that the commentators in the film were "conservative" or that the MSM leaned right. I took it that these were the leftist JSW types. Where did the idea that they were from the right come from?
This video represents an almost perfect inversion of the truth, from my own experience.
In fact, I actually had a discussion with a principal, where I used the example of 2 + 2. I showed how an unqualified teacher had erred in grading my daughter's test, on two problems -- her arithmetic was wrong. After she came in, burst into tears (?!!), and stormed out, refusing to ever speak to me again, the principal told me there was nothing he could do to correct the test score. I asked him: So she could teach the class that 2 + 2 = 5? And he said: Well, she IS the teacher of record, so.... I got to 1:48, saw where this was going and couldn't bear to watch the rest.
Why do we worry about external threats like the Norks, Russia, or the Chinese? This is much more serious and immediate.
How to fix it: Pay VERY high salaries to elementary teachers. Results: (1) there will be competition for those positions. (2) Appointed teachers will grow rich and more conservative.
