Three [tenured] Dartmouth College professors whose research had included studies of sexual desire and attractiveness have been put on paid leave...
This doesn't seem to be anything unusual and, as Althouse commented, the reporting lacks any specific details about what they supposedly did wrong, leading me to believe that it might be the results of their research are inconvenient. Being put on paid leave indicates to me that whatever the issue it is not egregious.
So if I understand the news today it is OK to let obviously mentally ill children (or in some cases their parents) to make life altering decisions about their gender to include medications and operations BUT we can't allow 18-26 year old adults to flirt. Did I understand that correctly
"I see little wrong with profs flirting with students, or vice versa. They're adults "
They are over the age of majority, but as we've seen many profs and students are not adults. In the parlance, adulting is hard. Bringing this item forward from yesterday for MF. The report on the recent events involving the U S Navy gives clear indication of how deep the trouble goes. We have at least two generations of young people whose education we cannot rely upon to be used in the US Navy.

We don't let children as young as 12, 14, or 15 drink legally, drive a vehicle, vote, use a tanning booth, or get a tattoo, yet we'll let them render themselves sterile by surgery/hormones and commit them to become permanent and constant consumers of the "medical" field. Which is basically why those demons pushing this in the medical community are all for it; not only are they on drugs for the rest of their lives- some which cause permanent and serious side effects (think contraceptives are bad? - heart attack, stroke, diabetes -endocrine disruptors) as well as dozens of surgeries and other procedures that i won't disgust you with, you can gulag them if you want to know what they are in order to complete the ruse that you are the opposite sex. And continual therapy, which won't help because what is broken is not in their pants. With the financialization of everything, these kids have now become commodities and they are vying for the right to provide them 'services'. They can and do prey upon the unpopular kids, the ones with self esteem problems (made worse by the edukashun system to begin with) and lack of direction because God and Truth has been removed from everything. And discipline. You shouldn't throw facts at the Zachborgs religion. It is very important to earth worshippers, that there be warming. Power over the rest of us hinges on it.
B. Hammer: It is very important to earth worshippers, that there be warming.
We're hardly an Earth worshiper, though we do have a soft spot for the bipedal apes that live there. Call it a peccadillo, if you like. As for global warming, that's an empirical and scientific finding. Government johns and government hookers are not the least bit interested in empirical or scientific evidence...the johns want satisfying results and the hookers want the money.
indyjonesouthere: Government johns and government hookers are not the least bit interested in empirical or scientific evidence
Perhaps, but scientists care about empirical and scientific evidence. Engineers care as they are held to higher standards...scientists are forever in the ether and recent findings show they publish masses of BS with poor to no peer review.

Engineers apply scientific findings. indyjonesouthere: scientists are forever in the ether Scientific claims are subject to observational confirmation or falsification. Virtually all of modern technological society is based on scientific discoveries. How did you think it worked?

Most scientific claims are NOT subject to confirmation or falsification and more researchers are focusing on that as too much money and time is being wasted on false results. Delingpole just pointed out 400 new papers in 2017 that say GW is a myth. John Lionnidis just released a piece in which he says that nearly all medical research if false and some medical research is actually detrimental to people. And that "science" that you swear is honest is nothing of the kind. There are too many mediocre scientists creating results that bear no resemblance to truth as they are after the money...and when the government money is available for the taking they are quite happy to take it. Buyer beware. It is good to see Trump eliminating the bait progressive politicians handed out to their progressive "scientists".

Of course they are. indyjonesouthere: Delingpole just pointed out 400 new papers in 2017 that say GW is a myth. Still a man hears what he wants to hear And disregards the rest indyjonesouthere: John Lionnidis just released a piece in which he says that nearly all medical research if false and some medical research is actually detrimental to people. You probably mean Ioannidis. How does Ioannidis know that the research findings are false? Do you think he applied the scientific method? The paper actually debunks your own point that scientists don't depend on confirmation and falsification. Furthermore, initial publication is only the first step in the scientific process. Speaking of which, later studies have shown that replication increases the probability of a finding significantly. In other words, science systematically tends towards accurate results. See Moonesinghe et al., Most published research findings are false--But a little replication goes a long way, PLoS Medicine 2007. Your claim was far too broad. You have only to look around you to see how the success of science has fundamentally changed the modern world, including in the very difficult field of human medicine.

The hacked emails at east Anglia show how full of it you are. The research was corrupt and the peer review was corrupt. Nothing has changed...only the monetary compensation. Now the compensation is getting strangled...a good start to end the charade. But you always have the Trump dossier and 17 intelligence agencies to fall back on.

Hold it now. Your claim was that "scientists are forever in the ether", not that there is some rough-and-tumble in one small corner of the scientific community. Have you abandoned your overgeneralization? As for your specific complaint about the hacked emails, they don't show more than that a few scientists wanted to prevent publication of what they considered pseudoscientific claptrap. Turns out it had minimal impact on peer review. This was investigated, by the way.

It should be obvious that if the FBI wants to question you that you need to claim the 5th. Doesn't matter if you are guilty or innocent the FBI can charge you with lying to the FBI with absolutely no more proof than an FBI agent's recollection of what was said in the interview. The FBI has become dishonest and inept. Incredibly it was much better under J. Edgar Hoover who was criminally dishonest himself. What a sad commentary and Mueller seems intent on tarnishing the FBI image even more.
GoneWithTheWind: It should be obvious that if the FBI wants to question you that you need to claim the 5th.
The FBI doesn't have the authority to make someone answer questions against their will. You simply have to ask if you are free to go. If no, then say you want a lawyer. But most people want to cooperate, and rarely are in any legal danger. If you do talk to the FBI, then don't lie. Either say nothing, or tell the truth. It never hurts to consult an attorney, in any case. GoneWithTheWind: What a sad commentary and Mueller seems intent on tarnishing the FBI image even more. Mueller reports to the Justice Department, not the FBI. He has an excellent reputation, and most criticism is simply because people don't like where the investigation is going. “If you do talk to the FBI, then don't lie.”
Good advice. For the record George Papadopoulos didn’t lie to the FBI. He told the truth. But what he said could with the help of an aggressive prosecutor and a Obama appointed Democrat left wing judge put him in jail for “lying to the FBI”. It is either a catch 22 or a perjury trap take your pick. “Mueller... He has an excellent reputation” As what? He knew about the fraud, bribery and kickbacks in the uranium deal and did nothing. In doing that he broke the law. What reputation does he have left. He is compromised and should recuse himself but he does not. Why? I think he is trying to cover up his past crimes. GoneWithTheWind: For the record George Papadopoulos didn’t lie to the FBI.
In fact, Papadopoulos pled guilty to lying to the FBI. GoneWithTheWind: He knew about the fraud, bribery and kickbacks in the uranium deal and did nothing. The proper place for the government to speak is in court, not via whispers about ongoing investigations. Vadim Mikerin and his associates were arrested and charged, but there is no evidence that their scheme had anything to do with the Uranium One deal, or that Clinton was a party to approving the Uranium One deal. “Papadopoulos pled guilty to lying to the FBI.”
Duh! That is the whole point of a perjury trap and also why you don’t talk to the FBI. “whispers… arrested and charged… no evidence… that Clinton was a party…” You are such a tool. Do you really believe the hundreds of millions that the Clinton’s got was just good luck? Mueller did nothing, in court or out. He is part of the crime and shouldn’t be investigating/covering up the crime.

It's strong evidence that Papadopoulos did, in fact, lie to the FBI. GoneWithTheWind: Do you really believe the hundreds of millions that the Clinton’s got was just good luck? The Clinton Foundation has raised billions of dollars. There's no evidence that the Clintons received any monetary gain from the Clinton Foundation.

“It's strong evidence that Papadopoulos did, in fact, lie to the FBI.”
First you have to know what was said which you apparently do not. Then you need to understand why the question was asked. Just like most questions in a multiple choice test there were two right answers. It didn’t matter which one he picked the FBI could say he lied. The question wasn’t even important, the facts around the question wasn’t important. No possible answer choice to the question was either illegal nor was what he did illegal. The simple fact was it was a perjury trap. Because they knew he was unsophisticated in the methods of dirty politics and sleazy “lawfare” and would be an easy mark. Then once trapped he would roll over and wear a wire rather than go to jail. IMHO this is sleazy, sleazy FBI and Mueller dirty tricks. “There's no evidence that the Clintons received any monetary gain from the Clinton Foundation” LOL. How is the view with your head planted firmly up your ass. It appears to me that the famous Clinton Teflon has worn off. I could be wrong but I think this time the Clintons might actually face justice and their dirty deeds become public. I do expect that the MSM will continue to run a cover for them but the dam seems to have broke and their crimes and treason is being exposed. My god! We came THAT close to her being president!!! What a frigging disaster that would have been.

"He could have gone to court, but chose not to."
That is the beauty of a perjury trap by the largest government in the world. You don't have enough money to fight it and they own the courts. This isn't about "justice" it is about using the power of the courts against innocent civilians to further the agenda of the government. "That's standard investigative procedure." It is and may be justified when dealing with the Mafia or worse. It seems sleazy and dishonest when dealing with someone who has committed no crime and is used only to indulge in political paybacks.

The judiciary is independent of the executive, despite Trump's protestations. As for cost, yes, it would have cost a lot, but it was within his means to afford an attorney, who probably helped craft the deal with the Independent Counsel's office. GoneWithTheWind: It seems sleazy and dishonest when dealing with someone who has committed no crime and is used only to indulge in political paybacks. He pled guilty to lying to the FBI about material facts in a criminal investigation.

Mueller's anthrax investigation was a disaster and I know of no one who views it any differently.
Whaddaya know! A relevant fact!
That's right. Mueller is not infallible nor is he a hero. According to some, Mueller does have an excellent reputation. But, according to others, including some highly respected attorneys who have had dealings with him in the past, he is just a mugger with a badge, who has no compunction about ruining the lives of people he has targeted for prosecution. I am always a bit wary of people like Mueller who have a savior complex and see it as their job to save the world.

"I see little wrong with profs flirting with students, or vice versa. They're adults "
So how would you feel if your daughters were forced to flirt with their gross old professor or else they'll get a B, even though their work is deserving of an A? What about a blowjob? Are you okay with professors "flirting" and "jokingly" requesting oral sex from someone whose grade is in their hands? Would you be happy for your daughters to attend that class? What would you want them to do: suck the professor's cock and get an A, or refuse to play along and end up with only a B? Remember, grad school admissions are at stake here. What exactly would you tell your daughters to do if their gross old tenured professor teaching a required course insisted on "flirting" with them? Shoot the bastard. But bad cases make bad law, so to speak.
I spent a lot of years in college and worked at a college for years. I have seen some examples of what you are talking about but you got it wrong. It was usually the young lady flirting with the prof/teacher for a better grade not the prof demanding sexual favors. And in all cases these male prof/teachers were not "old" they might have been mid 20's to mid 30's. I honestly cannot attest to what exactly took place and have assumed it was at most flirtation and perhaps a date and that grades may have been inflated but it wasn't truly a quid pro quo. Probably any student in the class could have improved their grade with sufficient initiative (begging, asking for help, much like the young ladies did but minus the flirting). I found that the profs/teachers were willing and eager to work with students to help them.
But it still goes back to the simple fact of life that at age 18 for almost everything in our life, legal and social, you are an adult. Guilty. Back before rocks I invited my Indian (from India) physical science adjunct over for dinner with the goal that without any physical contact or tonsil hockey (but a lot of flattery and garam masala) I might up my grade to a gentleman/lady's C from an art major's F. C minus. It worked. No one died.
