Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

“You need violence in order to protect nonviolence”
Just like the media is always lying for the truth. Back when the UVA rape story was coming undone a reporter commented that we shouldn't let the facts get in the way of a correct narrative. This morning I listened to the reporter for National People's Radio speak proudly of how she was accompanying and supporting the "counter-protestors," Black Lives Matter, people of color, and lesbians, gays and transgenders to shut down free speech in Boston. She was complimented for her virtue signaling by the NPR anchor, who agreed there shouldn't be any free speech in Boston because it was confrontational.
Had she seen any violence or confrontations with the "Alt-Right"? Well, no, she actually hadn't even seen any of the original free speech people, although there was supposedly a "small group" there. We truly live in Orwellian times. Video of the actual "Nazi" Free Speech rally participants:

The organizers of the Boston event made every effort to distance themselves from the Charlottesville event, where people were carrying Nazi flags and chanting Nazi slogans. Here's a video showing the crowd sizes of the protesters and counter-protesters (keeping in mind that it was held in Boston). California's new law will have the unintended effect of making healthcare workers decide to do something else.
Dems "risk" culture war in Charlottesville?? They WANT and DESIRE culture war. They have reason to think they're GOOD at it. And Yet President Trump, in His Classically Inartful Way, Was Absolutely Right: Dems can't agree with that, No Way, No How, and that's why we abhor them and and their minion media. PBS: Just one unnecessary more reason to stop giving them our tax money. Muslims attacking Europe: It's a soft target. Piece. Of. Cake. Check out this video of upstanding citizens swearing at and spitting on a lone Confederate supporter at the Lee statue in Charlottesville yesterday.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqXWhG6IZ50 As he was being escorted away by the police, the upstanding citizens kept on going after him. Finally, one of the officers turns around and says, "You want another day like Saturday, don't you?" (1:25) I sure hope the officer wasn't punished, but you know he has probably been suspended now. The lone Confederate supporter at the Lee statue in Charlottesville said, "I wanted to honor my ancestors here today Sir. They need to know that what they fought for wasn't slavery or oppression."
The protesters screaming at him should have been listening to him with an open mind and asking questions, they would have learned something about "diversity". I think the whole fiasco is ridiculous. In the South, people refer to the Civil War as the "War of Northern Aggression". They enjoy a cultural tradition that loves and supports the South. When I'm there I almost wish I were a Southerner. In Boston today there wasn't a lot of passion. Why would there be? What are the protesters protesting there? QUOTE: Islamist terror is an excretion of a dying world. And we are hated for being robustly alive. Modernity regularly swallows and digests disparate cultures. This often causes a conservative reaction as traditional institutions are forced to bend or break. If I try and bend that far, I'll break. re This is, indeed, the clash of civilizations. Islamist terror is an excretion of a dying world. And we are hated for being robustly alive.
Well that may be so, but even if the civilization dies, the religion and the barbarians will still be there. feeblemind: Well that may be so, but even if the civilization dies, the religion and the barbarians will still be there.
If history is any guide, the 'barbarians' tend to be swallowed up by the larger culture. Even with Rome and its fall, Roman culture and institutional mores remained. Silly me. I thought it was the barbarians that took down Rome and ushered in a thousand years of very little technological advancement and Group Think enforced by the Catholic Church.
Thank you for enlightening me. I hadn't realized Roman culture and language survived the fall. I had it backwards. feeblemind: I thought it was the barbarians that took down Rome and ushered in a thousand years of very little technological advancement and Group Think enforced by the Catholic Church.
There was considerable technological advancement even during the Early Middle Ages, including metallurgy, but especially improvements in agriculture such as the heavy plow, horse collar and shoes, and widespread use of wind and water mills. The High Middle Ages saw a further explosion of new technology. feeblemind: I hadn't realized Roman culture and language survived the fall. Latin, through the Church, was the language of learning, administration, and international diplomacy for most of the Middle Ages. The Church was structured along the lines of the Roman diocese, while secular powers adopted Roman models of governance. Two thumbs up Zach!

Good posting. I might add that one of those "barbarians" - Charlemagne - played a vital role in assuring the primacy of Latin in Western Europe as the lingua franca of the educated.
Both the Middle Ages and the Christian Church of that period get a bum rap from those views are limited to stereotypical notions.

Islamic barbarians have been trying to conquer Europe (not to mention the high seas) since Mohamed died. How long must we wait for them to be swallowed up (presumably meaning civilized)?
From a survey of the year 900 at the British History Podcast
QUOTE: So the south, in Africa, Islam was spreading into West Africa and at around this period the wealthy trading Kingdom of Ghana was in the process of converting. Ghana was one of three well organized kingdoms recognized by the Berber historian, Al Yaqubi (the other two, being Gao and Kanem). Ghana served as a trading nexus, dealing in slaves, gold, and salt and the spread of Islam into such an influential kingdom in the region would have long reaching effects. Many of these trade routes, by the way, crossed the Sahara and these trade routes stretched so far that we even see silk from china making it into the region. Unartful when compared to those of the chattering class, but rather artful for someone skilled in the arts of provoking thought and discussion as a path to persuasion. Confederate Civil War Re-Enactors Attacked During Soldiers' Reunion Parade:
