We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Madame Liberty

Stephen Miller is historically correct.  Lady Liberty was designed by the French as an inspirational symbol for the US illuminating the whole world with the idea of individual liberty so the world could enjoy the freedom of Americans - not as a welcome mat. 


Emma Lazarus' sentimental poem was a 1903 addition to the site of the statue, for some reason. 


What should America's immigration policies be? Let the American people decide. Who else should?

The freak out by the reporters in the room was ridiculous. They were hyperventilating over the notion of requiring some kind of money or skill before you are allowed to enter. They have ZERO sympathy for low- and middle-income workers in this country who have been displaced by undereducated immigrants. Sad, sad, sad.

These hacks don't care ONE whit about the crisis in this country for workers with low-skilled jobs or no-skilled jobs. Not at all.

I am glad Stephen Miller put them in their place and called them out for what they are: elitist snobs with no clue about how people in this country are suffering due to the U.S. 'open door' immigration policy.

How do you suppose Acosta would feel if he knew that Berthodi originally envisioned the SoL as a lighthouse at the beginning of the Suez Canal. Takes an idiot to think American immigration policy should be driven by a random poem, a statue or a lighthouse... or even all three combined

What is a reporter arguing the value of a policy. Shouldn't he be worried about getting the details of the policy correct so he can REPORT it accurately? That's just another example of mixing opinion with the news (started by Walter Cronkite).

Miller alluded to the ebb and flow of immigration but he didn't mention that for large chunks of time, there was no legal immigration so that the swell of immigrants could have time to assimilate.

Acosta brought up someone (a relative) who came from Cuba right before the Cuban Missile Crisis. He should also know that until Clinton changed immigration policy, political immigration (i.e. people fleeing tyranny and wanting to "breath free") were welcomed but economic immigrants were not. Clinton essentially ended the ability of Cubans to flee Cuba to freedom in spite of the analogy that sending Cubans back to Castro was like sending East Berliners who jumped the Berlin Wall back to STASI.

Disingenuous hacks. And the tell? Acosta mentions " Park Service revisionism " Anyone else see a MAJOR tell there? What on earth is he referring to? Everyone knows the Park Service is lefty-prog- "with it" modern in their attitude towards our historic places and what happened here or there .. and controversies, etc. Good grief. What a revealing diatribe.

We had excessive immigration for the last 50 years. I propose a moratorium on any and all immigration as well as finding and deporting anyone here illegally. Give it a few years/decades to assimilate the millions who flooded in here then put it up to a vote of the people. It shouldn't be up to a few unelected bureaucrats.

Actually, the French sent the thing over here as an advertisement once ocean travel had gotten relatively safe and convenient. It worked well.
