Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

IS GLOBAL WARMING ALARMISM A COMPLETE FRAUD?
YES!!! Please to note this refutes the Bletheridge Law (iirc), the one that states the answer to any headline ending with "?" is "NO".
My Episcopalian rector doesn't give us liberal lectures. Must be a Texas thing, or at least a Western Diocese of Texas thing. Not that he's a conservative fire-breather, either, by any means. He may be fairly progressive in some areas of his personal politics--hard to say--but he sticks to orthodoxy from the pulpit and doesn't drag his politics into it.
Consider yourself lucky. Leftist activism isn't confined to the Episcopal Church. We attend a Methodist Church. Our associate pastor, who by all accounts is an up and coming pastor gave the sermon at the Maundy Thursday service after North Carolina's "Bathroom Bill" was passed. He couldn't help himself from excoriating the hate that the "Bathroom Bill" embodied. One might have thought that other topics would be more important to him during Holy Week.
But then, this is the guy who wrote in an online column about the eroticism of Christ's sacrifice: QUOTE: Sexuality is love enfleshed...or is it Jesus who is love made flesh? In any case, "this is my body, given for you" seems unambiguously salvific and erotic. emphasis mine Thankfully he has been much more "restrained" since that Maundy Thursday service, but given what I've seen, he's not alone in his ideas. I'm afraid there are going to be big changes along these lines in the Methodist Church in the near future. Our Methodist church has just about alienated us completely, and when they vote to accept homosexual marriage at the end of the two year thought process I expect that will be the end of us being Methodist.
I hear you, JC. That's a conversation my wife and I have had, but we are plugged into our church that it might take more than that to get us to leave - everything else being equal. Of course, everything else may not end up being equal as some of our good friends may bolt and then we'd have fewer reasons to stay.
I guess its not enough for the Episcopal/Anglican church engage in self-immolation but it seems the Methodist church is following suit. I just did some poking around about what Lutherans believe and they seem refreshingly conventional so it seems that not all the other denominations are following that model. It seems that the churches that are more conventional Christian churches that don't get into "gender politics" seem to be gaining membership compared to those that do. Watch out for the specific Lutheran denomination, though. i grew up Lutheran, and what eventually became the ELCA is as SJW as the Episcopalians or Presbyterians (I believe they are in full communion with both). The LCMS (Missouri Synod) has stayed more biblically grounded, I believe, and there are a couple other small sects that may have as well.

Your point is taken. After I commented on "what Lutherans believe" to my wife, she reminded me that if I checked what Methodists believe, it would probably be similar. It may be the only refuge from this is some smaller independent Christian churchs (or some Baptist churches).

The Methodist church of the 50-60's that I grew up in no longer exists...it has been SJW converged. Today it is a great place to get an overdose of Marxist, feminist, and pervert theology but almost nothing related to the biblical God and Jesus. It is why I no longer go there. Church leadership will likely not enjoy their judgement considering how they are failing their congregations.
As someone whose family has been Anglican for generations, I can only say that Anglican churches vary. I have attended Anglo Catholic churches that reverently celebrated the mystery of Christ made flesh in the Mass while also passionately preaching the Good News that Jesus came to save ALL of us, loves us and calls us to remake the world in His image.
I have attended spiritually dead Anglican parishes w fat endowments and powerful parishioners and liberal duds for clergy who flattered the rich and couldn't preach to save their lives. One stayed out of loyalty to the tribe and because of achingly beautiful choral music and admirable people in the congregation who did good works without fanfare, inspiring one to behave better oneself. I have attended a mostly gay Anglican city parish w a vibrant ministry to the sick, the homeless and the hungry. Not much talk about liberal causes or faith journeys but a lot of sweat equity by all helping others--the Holy Spirit very much present. Churches reflect their communities' values. I presently live in a community of white collar pirates, so our clergy are most toadies, mediocroties and preach PC issues that demand no real personal sacrifice. Very much like the chauvinist, fundy rubbish (over-spiritualizing religion, so it's in a box and never affects anything in your "real" life making money, committing adultery, accumulating toys, that I heard from the pastor who took over a wonderful evangelical Congregational church I attended for years ecause of two awesome formerly Episcopal female pastors (conservative, evangelical). Scripture reminds us: "By their fruits ye shall know them." I am now back at a spiritually uninspiring Episcopal parish w beautiful music, dreary preaching, clergy I wouldn't call on if I was in the ER w a hurt relative (I'd rather call a neighbor than one of those overpaid PC clowns who leave all the pastoral care to well-meaning but untrained lay people). I stay because of the liturgy and because I admire my fellow communicants. Who are better people than I am. You can't be Christian in isolation. Christianity isn't taught, it's caught. So being around decent parishioners is good for my family. Also we have hordes of adorable kiddies.. The suburbs still do. Of course I would like better priests, better preaching but the faith isn't a consumer commodity. I stay Anglican out of loyalty to family tradition but also because I really do believe in the Via Media. Texan99 will know what I mean. A certain kind of person goes euw at the sight of church ladies and devoted volunteers. No one forces you to hang around the salt of the earth. So go to to a youthful hipster seeker church for a while for the rock music. They're entertaining for awhile. Then, when you want something more than a virtual church, come to a real church and you will be welcomed with open arms. So the imperfections of the Institutional church should not be used as excuses by people who just want to sleep off Saturday night's excesses or have more time for kiddie sports or family hiking on Sunday morning. Worship and belonging to a church are duties and commitments that help us and improve us. Sort of like working out. Discipline and a struggle at times. Sometimes joyful. It's not entertainment because it isn't all about us, it's about Him and following Him. I do know what you mean, Retriever. You and I have generally been on the same sheet of music in this area. :-)
2016 Comedians / Voter Mockery / Trump Derangement Syndrome
" GrapeApe said... Yes, the left is nuts. Read the dang news if you bother to any more. Batshit crazy is more like it. And I'm not a big fan of Republicans either. Folks have lost their dang minds. There is a significant part of the population who are tired of the way things have been going. Hence, President Trump. And all this CRAZY since his election just AFFIRMS their thoughts." " Michael K said... The real problem with derangement syndromes is that they take perfectly normal people with them. I read an interesting column yesterday that compared this hysteria to the 1980s day care hysteria. That also affected "perfectly normal people" who became lynch mobs and sent other "perfectly normal people' to prison for 20 year because of fanciful tales that went so as to include childrens' fantasies of being cut open with no scars created. The McMartin Daycare site was dug up looking for tunnels the children described to credulous (or evil) interrogators. I got quite interested in the subject and read a lot about it. It only ended when malpractice insurance companies refused to write policies covering psychologists' "Recovered Memories" treatment. Then it was like turning off a switch. The phenomenon ended that quickly but, unlike the Salem witch trials, there were no apologies to the innocent who were harmed. The only thing that might end this insanity might be a crashing defeat for the Democrats in 2018. After that, Civil War, if it does not end." I was as stunned as anyone, Nov 9th. I never expected the Middle to stand up for themselves. Of course, it is the Left's belief that they have no right to do so. The Political Class seemed pretty clear that they are not accountable to working Americans and that Working Americans are powerless to do anything about it. Never forget Martha Coakley and her despicable role in this witch hunt. She never paid any price.

"Still, Western men have been kept placid through endless distractions and lies for decades." That made me think that ESPN may be the match given their abandonment of the distractions for just more lecturing. I'm also reminded of what a friend said many years ago when his wife decided on divorce. After sleeping with the neighbor and getting dumped, the woman sought reconciliation before the divorce was final. My friend told me, he realized just how miserable he'd been. He sent her packing. They are going to keep pushing till more and more men (and women) realize just how miserable they've been and that it is up to them to change that. Unpleasantness seems to be in the offing. I'm wondering how guns become violent. Do you have to tease or bully them or do they just suddenly snap?
Frisco bans chocolate milk? That's RAAAAACIST.
NYT disses mac&cheese? For SHAME. CA wants to run the auto industry: Of course they do. Into the ground, mostly. I used to work with scores of MDs. The thing is, you have to look at the culture of medical school where staying fit (often through running) is another behavior to display to others to show how amazing you are. It's wonderful for people who are also recreational exercisers to match with a doctor who is also like that, you can compare notes about training for a 10K etc.
The problem these docs have is with people who are not or who cannot be 'fit' in that way due to personal circumstances or illness. I have seen astonishing levels of callousness displayed by MDs towards the less physically fortunate (the mentally disabled and people who have been crippled through car accidents, to cite two examples). So the crips and the tards don't really get much respect from these fit doctors and they tend to do better with the pudgy older ones. Compassion in a healer goes a long way... |
