Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

There is no Russia threat. Obama and Hillary tried hard to cozy up to Putin. Russia is a pathetic country, but no danger to the US at all. This whole thing was started by the Clinton campaign. From now on, I will ignore it all.

As others have already pointed out, given the Democrat tendency to make nice with the Russians- from the Cold War era to Obama and Hillary and Podesta, the whole array of charges seemed absurd from the beginning.
>Russia is a pathetic country, but no danger to the US at all.
This is so wrong on so many levels. Russia is at least as likely to drag us into WWIII as, say, North Korea, or Iran. The irony is that the only REAL evidence we have about the Russians is the payouts they made to the Clinton Foundation and to the Podestas.
The idea that Russia is pathetic, or weak, or dying is absurd. If one looks at the things they do, and ignore the idiot economists, it is obvious that their GDP must be at least as large as Germany's and might be larger than Japan's.There are just too many things that Russia does routinely that Germany, Japan and even the US can't do, like put men into low earth orbit. The US even buys Russian rocket motors to put its spy satellites into orbit. Russia is a very capable, very dangerous country, and it is the only country that could actually exterminate the US.
I agree that Russia is not much of a threat. No doubt they could do some damage but they know and we know that would be the end of Russia. Their population is about one-third of ours and their land mass is twice ours. Their per capita GDP is 15% of the American GDP which means Russia is a terribly poor country. The Russian GDP as a country is one-third of Germanys and one-fifteenth of ours.
North Korea isn't even on the map. One missile that even looked like it was coming our way and NK would turn to glass. It is to the military and governments advantage for us to have enemies. Even more for us to be "threatened" as that gives them an excuse to spend more of our money. Russia is not a threat. I can't even see how it's interests are opposed to ours. This Russia scaremongering is nonsense.
The News Junkie: There is no Russia threat.
Russia is a certainly a threat. Russia has a weak economy, but access to high technology, which is why they are using alternative means of conflict. They have destabilized Ukraine, annexed Crimea, wielded cyber-warfare to undermine new democracies in Europe, and directly interfered in elections in the U.S., gnawing at the underpinnings of democratic institutions. This doesn't constitute an immediate existential threat, but unchecked could unleash increasingly disruptive forces. The News Junkie: Obama and Hillary tried hard to cozy up to Putin. As always in diplomatic relationships short of war, there is every reason to try to work with the Russians where common interests prevail. In the long run, Russia must engage with the world on equitable terms if the Russian people are to have a better life. Currently, kleptocracy under the guise of nationalism rule in Russia. To hold that the Russians are somehow trustworthy allies would be a dangerous mistake. For Trump to have called for the Russians to disclose stolen emails for his own political gain was highly destructive. Zzzz: For Trump to have called for the Russians to disclose stolen emails for his own political gain was highly destructive.
Keep choking that chicken, kidz. “Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing." — Donald Trump
That was certainly a highlight of the campaign, I remember seeing it live, it was hilarious.
Trump was making a joke and his crowd loved it. And then some Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) tried to claim that this was some kind of treasonous secret message to Vladimir Putin, and I laughed all over again. Trump is a master at trolling the press. peacelovewoodstock: Trump was making a joke and his crowd loved it.
Sure, he was. Just like when he said the Russia hacking story was "a big Dem HOAX!" QUOTE: The fight began when Tur asked Trump if he “had any qualms” about calling on Russia or other foreign governments to release Clinton emails if they had obtained them. “Does that not give you pause?” an incredulous Tur asked Trump. “Nope. Gives me no pause,” Trump responded. “If they have them, they have them. We might as well find them." In fact, Trump got angry when questioned on his statement, and repeatedly defended his position.

If you haven't figured it out yet, Zach, the Russian thing is all a manufactured scam by the Democrats and their running dog media.
Joint Statement from the Department Of Homeland Security and Office of the Director of National Intelligence on Election Security: "The U.S. Intelligence Community (USIC) is confident that the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of e-mails from US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations... These thefts and disclosures are intended to interfere with the US election process."
... These thefts and disclosures are intended to interfere with the US election process."
Well, in what way did they interfere with the US election process? Or is that not specific enough? drowningpuppies: Well, in what way did they interfere with the US election process?
Several ways. By illegally hacking the Democrats, then releasing the information, the Russians revealed millions of dollars worth of research, as well as political strategies, giving an unfair advantage to Republicans. Furthermore, the timing of the releases was devised for maximum political effect to harm Clinton's campaign and the Democrats, leading to the resignation of the head of the DNC during the Democratic Convention. Russia has been using similar techniques against nations in Europe, undermining confidence in democratic institutions, especially in newer democracies. It's an attack against national sovereignty, and if left unaddressed, could lead to an erosion of confidence in the democratic process, and political destabilization.

Are you saying the head of the DNC wasn't forced to resign during the Democratic Convention due to the release of emails stolen by Russia? Or that the theft didn't involve closely guarded political strategies? Or that Russia isn't using similar techniques against European countries, including the Ukraine, where they have actually used hacks to shut down the electric power in the capital there?

I'm with you, News Junkie. It's insane. Russia poses no more of a threat to the US, than Serbia did to the Great Powers before WWI.
