We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
It creeps me out when I agree with Bill Maher. But he is right. Remember when leftists were so concerned about us burning books back when Bush was president? And they portrayed themselves as such paragons of free speech? Those days are over.
DNC Chair: of course there is no room for pro-life Dems at their events. Glad to hear it said out loud. Draw that line in the sand. Let people know that the Democrat party isn't happy unless babies are dying. America's genocide.
I used to like Maher. About 25 years ago. He was legitimately Libertarian back then. Somewhere around 9/11, he flipped a switch and went off the rails. Became a virulent religion hater and worse - often lied about religion to make his points.
He became a dyed-in-the-wool old style tax-and-spend Democrat. Unabashedly. A real change from his previous positions, which were decidedly small government is better in nature.
I went to see his show twice back in the day (Politically Incorrect it was called back then) and loved watching it because he was a great moderator of varied opinions. Now he's hack.
It's a shame, but c'est la vie. We still have PJ O'Rourke.
"'Science' marchers demand their 'right' to the taxpayer teat"
There were copy-cat marches in a couple of cities in Canada. On CBC Radio, one "scientist" wailed on about the "Harper regime" (i.e., our previous prime minister).
I was amused that this "scientist" would consider a democratically-elected government (which was duly defeated in a democratic election and replaced by another democratically-elected government) to be a regime.
Being a scientist can certainly make you a specialist in a particular field of knowledge; it cannot guarantee you won't be an ideological flake though.
It's all in the matter of calories eaten - calories burned = calories stored.
I can create a negative delta of 500 calories by running three miles on a treadmill, or a positive delta of 500 calories by eating a single jelly donut. If you're already overweight and out of shape, there's just no way you're going to be able to exercise enough to lose a substantial amount of weight without reducing calories ingested.
Exercise has other benefits related to health, but will not likely result in weight loss on its own.
The short of this is that you can't run yourself thin or eat yourself fit.
