Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Saturday music: Philip Glass

Probably his best-known piece. Love it or hate it. 40 minutes long.

Philip Glass is awesome! He studied for years in his youth with Nadia Boulanger in Paris (practicing classical technique more than 8 hours a day)and also worked with Ravi Shankar notating his musical score for some hippy movie in the 60s. IMHO it's the combination of disciplined classical technique and modern verve and surprise, eery melodies, weaving in threads from multiple musical traditions, not to mention stunning originality that make him great. Of course I'm biased: as a former dancer, I prefer classically trained modern artists to loosey goosey slobs...
Few modern musicians paint musical pictures as evocatively as Glass does. Or evoke mental images as well of figures and shapes moving thru space with their music as him. Then, again, I liked "Koyaanisqatsi"...the film he wrote the score for about modern life out of balance with nature...
