Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Holy cow. Another glimmer of insight by Peggy Noonan. However, she doesn't give enough emphasis to the mediocrity of the clerisy. They seem only exceptional in their deceitfulness and sneakiness ala Gruber and Rhodes. BTW, I would have put BANAL and PAROCHIAL in all caps.
"When I read that I imagined a conversation with my grandmother, an immigrant who was a bathroom attendant at the Abraham & Straus department store in Brooklyn. Me: “Grandma, being Catholic is now a step up. It means you’re an aristocrat! A stupid one, but still.” Grandma, blinking: “America truly is a country of miracles.” Here’s what you see in the emails: the writers are the worst kind of snobs, snobs with nothing to recommend them. In their expression and thoughts they are common, banal, dumb, uninformed, parochial. I don’t know about you but when people look down on me I want them to be distinguished or outstanding in some way—towering minds, people of exquisite sensibility or learning. Not these grubbly poseurs, these people who’ve never had a thought but only a sensation: Christians are backward, I saw it in a movie! It’s the big fact of American life now, isn’t it? That we are patronized by our inferiors." http://www.wsj.com/articles/americas-decadent-leadership-class-1476400544 "Belonging": Hahvahd's doing a rotten job on "inclusion", apparently.
Cape Town U. "students" don't want to learn "black science"? Raaaaaacists! Best Immigrants: Ahhhhh, from The Atlantic! A bit lower on my list of questionable sources. The problem with immigration:
Immigration today is a conspiracy by Democrats to split the vote and take the power from the citizens, essentially to steal the country. This isn't an accident it was put in place by Ted Kennedy and his co-conspiritors in the 60's. It will create a solid Democrat/socialist voting block that would assure a completely Democrat control of Congress, the administration and the courts. Kiss your constitution good bye. It will succeed even though it depends upon a majority of American citizens acquiescing to commit political and cultural suicide. There was a time when I believed that when this agenda became more clear, more obvious to the American public that they would rise up and stop it. I know longer believe that. If it were just a change of who holds the reins of government it woould not be "so" bad but it is far more. The Democrats of today are not your fathers Democrats. They are Marxist-socialist who intend to change our constitutional republic to a socialist dictatorship. This is the largest power grab in history. The kicker is that it cannot be done peacefully. Yes, we will sleep while the Democrats seize power and usurp the constitution but at some point a sizeable percentage of the country will rebel and will take up arms. We will see civil war, we will see foreign interests insert themselves into our troubles and I doubt America can be saved. This will end badly. Would/could Trump prevent it or turn it around? Probably not but I do think he would ameliorate it and just that alone could put us on a road to eventually turn it around. But make no mistake the elite do not want this and if Trump did win they would step out of the shadows and either assassinate him or force the system into a full on crash. IMHO the future looked sooooo much better in October 1929 than it does today. Hold on to your hats, I think we are all in for a rough ride. "Those who come here are generally of the most ignorant stupid sort of their own nation, and as few Americans understand the Spanish or Arabic Language, and so cannot address them either from the press or the pulpit, it is almost impossible to remove any prejudices they once entertained. Not being used to liberty, they know not how to make a modest use of it. I remember when they modestly declined meddling in our elections, but now they come in droves."
The article is immediately wrong that those of German extraction outnumber English. It comes from a great number of Americans having their immigrant ancestor remote enough that they don't know what country s/he came from.
Secondly, Franklin was right about those who came from Germany in his day. They sent us better specimens in later generations. I love it when folks explode myths with worse myths. Assistant Village Idiot: Secondly, Franklin was right about those who came from Germany in his day.
Which makes the point. People complained about the "ignorant stupid" Germans, the "ignorant stupid" Italians, the "ignorant stupid" Irish, the "ignorant stupid" Poles, the "ignorant stupid" Jews", the "ignorant stupid" Chinese, the "ignorant stupid" Catholics, the "ignorant stupid" Mexicans, etc., who once "declined meddling in our elections, but now they come in droves." There is opinions and insults from every side, every race/culture, everyone. It is human and natural to like/love what you know; who you know and dislike and fear what you don't know. If your agenda is to destroy one group or one person and you have no honesty and morals then it is easy to use off the cuff comments or flippant remarks by an individual or group of people to do it. All it requires is a blind side to what everyone else said and a intense search for what your target said. Ignore everything good that they did and concentrate on selective interpretations of casual comments. It's a national game every election year and it is disgusting. Personally I blame this all on Bush.

Sure. Xenophobia is an evolved trait. The problem is that, in modern society, it leads to irrational fear and injustice. This returns us to Gone With The Wind's comment, which strongly parallels every past wave of immigration. But the America he seeks to defend is itself made up of those waves of immigration. IdahoBob: Personally I blame this all on Bush. There are a lot of problems with the politics of George Bush, but xenophobia doesn't seem to be one of them. He seemed to want to move the Republican Party into a more ethnically diversified future. He may have succeeded if he hadn't overseen so many policy debacles.

I know you want to sling around insults but your point is valid in a way that doesn't support what you are saying. "Xenophobia"!! Sure but on the part of everyone, alll humans including the immigrants. That's the point! You would like to make this "our" problem but it is a human problem.
You may not agree with GoneWithTheWind's comment but again you miss the point; it is true, like it or not it is true. You resent that it's true and try to, again, sling insults. You simply don't get it. As for the Bush comment do you really not recognize humor or sarcasm???

Sure. Everyone experiences xenophobia to a greater or lesser extent. IdahoBob: You may not agree with GoneWithTheWind's comment but again you miss the point; it is true, like it or not it is true. You're conflating the experience of xenophobia with the reasonableness of fearing others. Being able to recognize close kin, and being cautious around strangers has a significant advantage in primitive society. However, in modern ethnically diverse culture, skin-color and other such clues are not reliable indicators of danger. Instead, it leads to irrational fear and injustice.

"skin-color and other such clues are not reliable indicators of danger."
"Even Jesse Jackson said a few years ago, “There is nothing more painful to me … than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery, then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved.” In this country there is no mostly white neighborhood that I would be afraid to walk in at night. The same thing cannot be said for neighborhoods that are more ethnically dense. This simple fact is NOT the fault of white people or xenophobia. It is 100% the fault of those ethnic groups whose culture and lifestyles continuously produce criminal children who grow up to be criminal adults. People who have no impulse control and few moral beliefs. Blacks commit crimes of violence at ten times the rate of whites and if you are white in a large city you are 20 times more likely to be violently attacked by a black male than a white person. Black rape of white women is epidemic while white rape of black women is so rare it almost never happens. The disparity and the problem is so severe, so horrendous that the media is forced to hide black on white crime and to make up instances of white on black crime to even appear to be fair and balanced. And then there are the many left wing apologists for black crimes, like Zach, who must constantly play the blame game and xenophobic shaming in a vain attempt to coverup the crimes that blacks and illegal aliens commit everyday.

As the vast majority of blacks are law-abiding, that's an example of irrational fear. It's like the fear of terrorism. While terrorism is a legitimate issue that has to be addressed, the chance of a particular person being injured is very small. IdahoBob: Blacks commit crimes of violence at ten times the rate of whites and if you are white in a large city you are 20 times more likely to be violently attacked by a black male than a white person. In 2013, the FBI reported that where a murder victim was white, in 83% of those cases, the offender was also white.

From a very interesting article.
http://www.hoover.org/research/americas-civilizational-paralysis "Illegal immigration poses a similar dilemma. No nation can remain stable when 10-20 million foreign nationals have crashed through what has become an open border and reside unlawfully in the United States—any more than a homeowner can have neighbors traipsing through and camping in his unfenced yard. Likewise, there are few multiracial societies of the past that have avoided descending into destructive ethnic chauvinism and tribalism once assimilation and integration were replaced by salad-bowl identity politics. Common words and phrases such as “illegal alien” or “deportation” are now considered taboo, while “sanctuary city” is a euphemism for a neo-Confederate nullification of federal immigration laws by renegade states and municipalities. Illegal immigration, like the deficits, must cease, but stopping it would be too politically incorrect and painful even to ponder. The mess in Europe—millions of indigent and illegal immigrants who have fled their own failed states to become dependent on the largess of their generous adopted countries, but without any desire to embrace their hosts’ culture—is apparently America’s future." It would seem that the Hoover institute is guilty of "irrational fear".

The percentage of the population that is foreign born has varied through U.S. history, and is lower now than during most of nineteenth century.

In the 60's Ted Kennedy and fellow Democrats launched the attack on our country and our constitution that today is known as legal immigration. They did this for cynical, political and self serving reasons. Their intent was to flood the country with poor immigrants to undermine our political system and create a super political power out of the Democrat party. Why should we continue this mass suicide pact? Why have any legal or illegal immigration at all? We don't "need" more people and we certainly don't need more poor uneducated people. Why not set a zero immigration policy? Let's put it to a national vote.

Who pays for those people who have been forced to flee their homelands and need a refuge? Who pays for 20 million illegal aliens? With the numbers of refugees and illegal border crossings skyrocketing can we afford to pay for them all? where does it stop? Must we destroy the middle class to pay for everyone who wants a free ride? Oh wait! That is the intent of this; to bankrupt and destroy the middle class.
Can the Democrats succeed in that? Will all the over-worked and over-taxed middle class role over and give up? There is a tipping point where enough people will lose their lifestyles, lose their homes and jobs and they will fight. It won't be pitch forks and tar & feathers. Is this the Democrats plan. This is how you take a democracy to a Soviet style or Venezuelan style Marxist dictatorship.

Pretty much certain Summer, the former Apprentice contestant, is a plant by the Trump campaign. Which would be GENIUS, by the way.
1) Summer was on The Apprentice many years ago. Considering Trump will call up people he met once or twice and ask them personal questions about their lives - a sick mother, a financial situation - tells me Trump does not have a bad memory. Yet, he claims that he can't even remember her from the show... 2) Summer wrote a lovely letter to Trump only six months ago asking how she could help the campaign, invited him to her restaurant, etc. 3) Trump had the letter from Summer ready to go only a few hours after the Gloria Allred press conference. 4) Today, Trump campaign whips out letter from Summer's cousin who says this is all lies and that Summer has been trying to convert her family to vote for Trump. If the press and Gloria Allred are so dense as to not see that Summer was a plant by the Trump campaign, then they deserve everything they get. Expect some sort of 'surprise' this week before the debate to reveal the hoax. Also, expect that other accusations that come out are the same thing. Press/left will not know which of these women hoaxed them and which are truly wanting to help the HRC campaign. These accusations will disappear quickly. For recent New England news of interest, consider the death of Donn Fendler, from the Bangor Daily News.
QUOTE: Donn Fendler remembered as ‘true American hero,’ legend to generations of Mainers: For a nine-day span in 1939, the saga unfolding in the deep woods of Maine riveted newspaper readers around the globe.Donn Fendler, a 12-year-old boy from New York, was lost on Mount Katahdin. At one point, he was presumed dead, and the search party shrunk from more than 300 to just 50.And then Fendler walked out of the woods and told his tale.On Monday, Fendler died at age 90. For thousands who read his story, “Lost on a Mountain in Maine,” or met the man during his frequent classroom visits over several decades, Fendler won’t be forgotten. He helped co-author a short book about his adventure, a book which several generations of Maine elementary school students have read. Many of those students wrote Fendler, who replied to those letters. There is a Donn Fendler page at Amazon, which includes a relatively recent graphic novel rendition of his story. The New York Times carried his obituary, but pride of place puts this reference after the Bangor Daily News. There is also a Donn Fendler web page. Everything on the Denny's menu is allowed in my diet plan, too, just not in very large quantities.
