The ADA is also the cause of a real crying damn shame out on the playground! As a result of ADA rulings now public park is allowed to have sand underneath the swing sets or the slides or any of the playground equipment. IT IS A MANDATE that all public playgrounds use a special type of treated tree bark. Therefore, the kids no longer jump off the swing. No longer tumble and roll at the bottom of the slide, no longer use the play area to do any number of playing acrobatics that we use to do as kids. NOW the children are terrified of falling on this nasty stuff and getting splinters. BUT, not to worry. Any wheel chair can roll across the bark better than it can on sand! AND there is a special politcally correct bonus to this madness. We are no longer destroying the world's beaches by taking the sand from the beach and putting it playgrounds where the vast majority of children can truly PLAY ! I am not saying I would like to see the children in wheel chairs sitting alongside unable to wheel around--however, it would be nice if someone corrected the design mandate to also include the majority of the play area have sand and a smaller area (percentage of the population ratio?) have the stinking bark underneath. Do you see where I am going with this: the vast majority of children are denied the opportunity to play creatively, to exercise to the max, because of the control the special interest group has had over the legislation. Will someone please call the ACLU and get them to take care of this! ;-)
