Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

re: Albee,
I've never had the pleasure of seeing one of his plays in action, but I got into him as a weirdo teen ager. Virginia Woolf is still one of my favorite films. re; What Trump should say, That is exactly what Trump should say and it's what almost every American thinks and does say on a regular basis. If we controlled the border, the only Mexicans to immigrate here would be the hard working, family oriented, church going type. America needs more people like that. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf is one of two films I had to walk out of. I admit I know nothing about it's history or it's hidden meanings to the literati. But it was beyond disgusting. I do think Elizabeth Taylor deserved the Oscar for her performance, what I saw of it. Clearly the part is of the worlds biggest bitch and Taylor played that part to a "T". All I could think of as I was watching the movie is 'that's why men commit suicide and commit domestic violence'. If there was any other meaning to the movie it was so overwhelmed by the screaming vile bitch that it wasn't obvious to me. I do seriously wonder what it is, exactly, that makes something like this "attractive" to so many people...
Earth to Kohn: Nobody's perfect, and so you cannot have political package deals that bat a thousand. Also, reality is more complex than you realize. Your human rights allies are already losing sight of the end in the means, too.
The latest bombings are the new world order brought to you by Obama and Hillary. Obama wants to dramatically increase the effort to bring in terrorists/refugees even as he leaves office. Obama never liked America and seems committed to destroy America. Hillary is more of the same. This is the new normal. You can't send these terrorists/refugees back and they will continue their random bombings and eventually far worse. They will create "no-go" zones within our country where they can operate and organize with impunity. I do not believe that Obama, Hillary and the UN brought us to this point by accident just as the German people don't believe that Merkel is destroying her country unintentionally. We have two choices; more of the same or changing direction. Frankly I don't think we have been bombed enough yet and it will take a lot more before we wake up to this threat.
It was interesting to see Hillary respond to this bombing. She was clearly under/over medicated and seemed lost and unaware. Someone on her staff needs to be fired for sending her out in her condition to be videoed while so obviously incapacitated. I fear for our country if this seriously ill zombie is elected. Hey! Homeland security. This is me seeing something; an incompetent candidate and saying something. "Clinton Foundation Spent Millions More On Travel Than Charitable Grants, IRS Filings Show"
But...but ...but...Zachariel tells us the record shows the Clinton Crime Family Foundation saves millions of people and spends all but a teeny-tiny portion of its ill-gotten gains, on charity projects! Who should I believe? The CCFF's own records filed with the IRS? Or the smug collective troll who calls itself "Zachariel? B48: The CCFF's own records filed with the IRS?
The audited filings show that about 87% of Clinton Foundation spending was on program expenses. When you hire someone to travel to Malawi to advise on that country's health care, those expenses include travel and salary for the health care workers. How did you think it worked? QUOTE: Charity Navigator, a non-profit watchdog that has received favors from the foundation, gave the foundation a four star rating. Charity Watch gave the Clinton Foundation an A-rating. Repeating results of failed studies doesn't change facts.
THis was for you https://medium.com/@nntaleb/the-intellectual-yet-idiot-13211e2d0577#.33y9xym9b DrTorch: Repeating results of failed studies doesn't change facts.
Actually, it was B48 who said to refer to the IRS filings, which were audited by Pricecooperswaterhouse. Examining those filings shows that about 87% of Clinton Foundation spending was for charitable causes. That's called primary evidence. Meanwhile, B48 linked to an article which referred to Charity Navigator. We pointed to Charity Watch as a secondary source. DrTorch: Repeating results of failed studies doesn't change facts.
By the way, a bald claim that something is a "failed study" is not an argument. That requires looking at the actual evidence. The article B48 referred to, did look at the evidence, pointing out that travel was a larger expense than direct grants. We responded that travel can be a valid program expense, along with salaries. Then we asked, "How did you think it worked?" Re: Sally Kohn: It’s ‘Good’ If Conservatives Feel Unable To Speak On Campus
First Clinton vows to shutdown Breitbart (actually not 'first', this sort of thing has been going on for a long time), then Kohn is glad there is no free speech on campus. Just more authoritarianism from the left. Her campaign did: http://dailycaller.com/2016/08/18/hillary-campaign-vows-to-destroy-opposition-website/
But then she didn't say it herself - pretty convenient. Sort of like the birther thing where a staffer starts it and her attack dog Sid "Vicious" Blumenthal makes sure it gets spread but her hands remain clean! mudbug: Her campaign did: http://dailycaller.com/2016/08/18/hillary-campaign-vows-to-destroy-opposition-website/
Typical of the right-wing echochamber. Notably they didn't provide the actual text of the email. The email does say that radical, bigoted, anti-Muslim, anti-Semitic conspiracy peddlers, such as Breitbart, should be kept from the levers of power — through the democratic process. You don't think the, "sexist" description wasn't intended to identify those who might be anti-abortion? You don't think the "homophobic" description wasn't intended to identify those who might be against a redefinition of the participants in a marriage? Since the left is big on decrying certain descriptions and terms as "code words" for something else - Jim might be justified in thinking those terms apply to Christians, because, well, "Code Words". As Screwtape advised, you're demanding, "that all of [Hillary's] utterances are to be taken at their face value" while opponents to hers and like political positions are to be judged, "with the fullest and most over-sensitive interpretation."
This was intended as a reply to 5.2.1, but such is the risk inherent in commenting by touch pad instead of keyboard.
BornSouthern: You don't think the, "sexist" description wasn't intended to identify those who might be anti-abortion?
No. It probably refers to the different standard woman are often held to when in positions of power. BornSouthern: You don't think the "homophobic" description wasn't intended to identify those who might be against a redefinition of the participants in a marriage? No. People are afraid of the changing nature of society, including demographic changes, and more openness towards homosexuals and others who don't fit the conventional norms. BornSouthern: you're demanding, "that all of [Hillary's] utterances are to be taken at their face value" while opponents to hers and like political positions are to be judged, "with the fullest and most over-sensitive interpretation." No. We are looking at context to determined the actual meaning. Breitbart is saying that Clinton would use the power of government to legally restrict their right to publish. That is clearly not what was meant by the email at issue. Jim: "Homophobic" is leftist code speak for Christians.
No. Not all Christians are homophobes, and not all homophobes are Christians.

More scary is she called believing Christians "deplorable" and "irredeemable." That shows you where we are headed if, God forbid, she becomes president.
Jim: More scary is she called believing Christians "deplorable" and "irredeemable."
Clinton was not referring to believing Christians, but explicitly to xenophobic elements among Trump supporters. QUOTE: Hillary Clinton: You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic -- you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. xenophobic: intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries.
You mean like Poland, France and Russia when Germany crossed the border in WW II. Or maybe you mean Kuwait when Iraq invaded. But certainly you don't mean the very rational fear of terrorists that some Trump supporters are expressing. I welcome people from other countries. I travel all the time and see many visitors to America. Welcome, spend some money, go home, safe trip. I don't feel the same way about illegal aliens and refugees. I have to support them through my taxes for years, decades, generations. I'm tired of it. GoneWithTheWind: You mean like Poland, France and Russia when Germany crossed the border in WW II.
Sure. Pedro running the taco truck is Hitler. Read your own definition and see if you can find the flaw in your reasoning. I see, I thought you were talking about the terrorists we allow into the country. But no, you are talking about the illegals who criminally come here and take welfare and jobs from us. There is a difference I hope you know. The only legal and just way to deal with illegal immigrants/criminals is to expel them, deport them, perhaps even punish them with fines and prison. Not reward them. This is true regardless of their country of origin.
Hey! Way to go proving Godwin's law. Usually proof positive you simply lack any legitimate argument what so ever. GoneWithTheWind: I thought you were talking about the terrorists we allow into the country.
No. The topic wasn't terrorists, but the irrational fear of others. GoneWithTheWind: Way to go proving Godwin's law. Um, you invoked Godwin, saying "You mean like Poland, France and Russia when Germany crossed the border in WW II." So on top of everything else you do not understand Godwin's law either.

The invasion of Poland is a clear reference to Hitler.

From Politico: "Trump...who doesn’t start with a “plan,” but rather gets himself in the thick of things and then moves outward to a workable idea"
