Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Of course affirmative action fails students. You can't make up for lack of academic ability with remedial courses. This is just another example of PC insanity. When you become PC you have to deny reality and live in fantasy land.
I think it CAN be done, but not that it WILL be done. The schools have been dumbed down, and the majority black schools even more. They'll need more work to get where they should be to enter college, and much more to be able to compete with their better-educated classmates.
Someone thinks Hillary is going to win in a landslide? LOLOLOLOL!
Who's willing to answer a call from a poller? Who's interested enough to lie outrageously to said poller? I'm a No and then a YES.
I was pretty curious about that Roger de Hauteville guy, because of the unusual name. So I googled the name: King of Sicily, 1071 - 1101! He's one old dude. I see why you only bring him out a few times a year. I enjoyed his writings.
Re: Donald Trump’s Lincolnesque Moment - A landmark in the emergence of a new Republican Party.
While I respect David Horowitz, I'm going to reserve judgement on Trump's "landmark" speech given that Trump says a lot of things he doesn't mean or may not even be aware he's saying. That speech, I'm pretty sure, was somebody else's words Trump was reading and there's no telling if they actually mean anything more than a lot of the other nonsense he spews. But the main thing is: I don't know who Horowitz has been listening to that these thoughts are some new Big Idea - I've been reading Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams most of my adult life and they've been saying these things over and over and over for 40 years. The welfare state is the worst thing that has happened to poor and minority communities because it's dedicated not only to the proposition of giving a man a fish but also teaching him that anybody who suggests he might want to learn how to fish is his enemy. And that's not some new and novel idea, heck, Ronald Reagan got elected saying much the same thing. So show me a Republican presidential candidate that hasn't had speechwriters on staff? Your hoops that Trump must jump through are only hoops for him and no one else?
You think Cruz or Rubio would only write their own speeches and craft every bit of their policies alone in a room with a laptop? This is just the height of absurdity. Everything Trump is now talking about in detail have been his platforms since the beginning: trade, taxes, ISIS, terrorism, unemployment in black communities, Obamacare. Just please stop with the nonsense. Say it isn't so! A speechwriter? I sure hope other politicians don't pick up on tha idea. We'd never be able to trust any of them again. Can't believe he'd pay anyone to use old ideas either. We all know all politicians use only fresh material in their speeches that they write themselves.
Weinstein: Read all about it at jqpublic.com
Could Trump be the savior of the blacks? Well, he's not a part of the Democrat Party, so...yes. An aside: The so-called elites hate him and anyone who might vote for him most ferociously. I shall return the favor. To the pseudo scientist who says that Zika is doing us a favor by holding down population: If you want to limit who can have kids, and how many they can have, good luck with that. Sure, it sounds logical at first. But if the people who issue the parental licenses abuse this like politicians and bureaucrats abuse EVERYTHING then it is the start of the worst tyranny imaginable. How long until the party in power tries to snuff the other out of existence? No thanks.
Mickey Weinstein has been promoting his irrational view of "Separation Between Church and State", especially with the USAF, for years. The Air Force did have some valid issues with proselytizing, especially at the AF Academy, that, once identified, were corrected. Some Christians do have challenges leaving their religion off duty. That said there are military chaplains to support the troop's religious needs--a very ecumenical bunch. My recollection is that he successfully had free to the military Gideon Bibles pulled from all AF billeting (base hotel) rooms, but other than administrative changes by the AF, details of which escape me, according to his Wikipedia article, he's been unsuccessful in several lawsuits. In my 30 years in active duty and as a civilian in the AF, (and as a practicing Catholic), I've been exposed to private religious views, but never, ever felt threatened or oppressed. He's a snowflake in the most demeaning sense of the word.
Aftirmative Action: Admitting unprepared students to university ought to be banned as fraud, because there's no way they'll graduate. This goes for all races (I myself should not have gone). Not only affirmative action but also government subsidies and student loans are part of this problem.
This is not to say that most black students' poor outcome is not a problem we need to fix. It is, very much so. But the way to fix it is in the K-12 schools -- by privatizing them or at least instituting vouchers. The roots of the problem are (1) teachers' unions and (2) the bad attitude Al Sharpton teaches his following. Zika: Anyone who believes it's a good idea to hold down the human population needs to read the work of Julian Simon, especially The Ultimate Resource. Buffalo: Simple enough. Have the Park Service allow a hunting season until they are reduced to sustainable numbers. If the Service doesn't have legal authority to allow this, then let Congress grant it to them. "The first landslide president we don't want"? Am I the only one old enough to remember Nixon and his Dirty Tricks campaign? Of course even if Trump wins, he also would be a president we don't want. Even his supporters are just choosing an unknown quantity as opposed to a known evil. I'm not doing that but I can understand it. While I don't really WANT Trump, I am very concerned at the possibility that Killary might be elected. We have have never elected a dirtier, more scandal-tainted candidate than her. Warren G. Harding was a saint compared to someone who has used the State Department to fleece special interests from our shores to the dingy corners of the world. She knowingly broke our laws with the email server, said she didn't have any forbidden emails on it, but that it had been wiped clean. Geez, Nixon could take lessons. The big difference is that the press was out for Nixon's blood and the big media is busy hiding Killary's sins. Even her own party would rather have an old socialist than her.
So please tell me more about how unwanted Trump would be by comparison. Yes, he is brash and a narcissist. But he isn't a criminal who has done everything he can to hide the evidence. The Clintons are experts at obstructing justice. Actual literal racists tend to be beneficient people today, suggesters of better programs to benefit blacks or at least to stop hurting them.
Why does the park service want to get rid of the Buffalo at the North side of the Grand Canyon? The story hints at it but then implies it is about too many buffalo or something. No, the problem is that they are not "pure" buffalo and must be purged. They intend to coerce public opinion in favor of the purge and then carry it out. Why? I have seen the Buffalo at the North Rim and if they are a hybrid it certainly isn't obvious. They look just like the Buffalo you see at Yellowstone. Their numbers are not so great that they cause problems, in fact most visitors to the North Rim do not see them. Why the sudden furor over these buffalo?
If they get rid of the buffalo then people will not come to the Parkto see them...that would please the Park Service because they don't want those pesky visitors messing with "their" park. The Park Service, the Forest Service, the BLM and all other Federal agencies that deal with public lands are working hard to keep the public out.
