We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"If I were going to give a young man advice as to how he might succeed in life, I would say to him, pick out a good father and mother, and begin life in Ohio."
All of my ancestors five or more generations back migrated to central OH a little northeast of Columbus, mostly from PA and VA. Then most of their offspring or their offspring's offspring etc. etc. migrated to northeast Indiana where I was born and raised. Most early males were getting land grants, many for service in the early wars. I guess I am an Ohoosier.
My advice to a young man would be: Learn at least two useful skill sets that are in demand and will keep you employed. Marry a good woman and make your family your number one priority. Avoid drugs and alcohol and choose a healthy lifestyle. Stay mentally and physically active and keep learning. Avoid bad people and bad situations. Plan your life but be open to opportunities and events you didn't plan for. Live your life well.
