We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The elites do not know any people like me, young not-millionaire entrepreneurs who like to go fishing and water-skiing, and drink beer, on weekends. People for whom the feds (can substitute EU) are more of an annoyance and obstacle than a benefit. The elites do not know any normal people.
The best explanation I heard was from a British woman standing in her front yard, pointing at a pier across her street. She said she be damned if someone she had never met and didn't vote for was going to tell her that her husband could fish beyond the end of the pier as that was Dutch waters now. And to make certain he obeyed, the family members, who had earned their living by fishing for multiple generations, had to destroy all boats except for one dory. And, she couldn't sell the chickens she raised in her backyard at their local market because she wasn't feeding them EU-approved grains and she needed monthly inspection to adhere to the EU laws, for which she had not voted. Amen.
Brexit: "For me, one of the takeaways from the referendum is the reminder that people care deeply about things other than pure economic interest." Thomas Frank, please come to the white courtesy telephone.
