Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

In regards to the ROE for our Special Forces in Afghanistan: sadly, it's reach is much broader than that. My son serves with the Navy in a capacity that routinely places him in combat with our enemies.
During one of his recent calls home he lamented: "Dad, it's getting so you can't even shoot back at the b*stards." Typical stupid comments on the article blaming chicken for early puberty.
Chickens aren't fed hormones in the US. It's not necessary. They have through selective breeding, created breeds that reach butcher weight in very short time periods by feeding and housing them (your free range chickens free range inside a building) in large groups. Instead of blaming farmers for the abundant supply of food that's making kids fat, maybe there should be a little introspection. The whole "hormone free, antibiotic free beef" is another marketing ploy. The meat processers have no idea if their suppliers feed or use hormone supplements if they are buying their supply through the auction markets. And not every stockyard feeds antibiotics. It is a huge NO NO to send an animal to auction or to slaughter if it has a drug (antibiotic) residue that is measurable in it's muscle tissue or liver. It will lead to shutting you down permanently. And most people don't differentiate hormone from antibiotic or have any clue how livestock is raised. It would surprise me if early puberty were not strongly linked to upping the average childhood calorie intake by about 50%.
Bingo! Fat kids equals early puberty.
Both of my kids were skinny as string beans. Both did not 'mature' until they were in early high school - around 14. The NORMAL age for puberty. And just to let all of those guilty parents in on a secret: I am not one of those 'health' moms that goes ballistic with 'healthy snacks.' I had Little Debbie available. Ice cream. Sugar cereal. Etc. However, I also fed them normal meals. Made dinner almost every night. Did not give them soda as a regular drink - in fact, when they were young, they really didn't like soda. Fast food was occasional, and they usually hardly finished any of it. Kids have a natural 'full' point. For some, the full point is low on the scale (like my kids), but for others it is higher. However, no baby/toddler will eat himself into obesity without some big help from the parents (sugary drinks, terrible diet). Anyway, that's my rant. Saw a pile of fat 5-year-olds at a swimming lesson years ago. I had no idea how these parents managed to make such fat children in such a short number of years. Oh, and my kids were not big exercisers either. Just regular kid play and tv/video game time. Yup, I heard an old rule of thumb that puberty begins at 100lbs. Since more kids reach that apex faster, it begins sooner. However, the idea that there have been huge changes is not true. One study I read said it had only changed on average, to begin 3 months sooner than before. There have always been kids that began at age 8 and I personally know two of them.
The Fox News story on terrorism amid refugees is pretty bad news. Dar al-harb and the Trojan horse.
Perhaps she is getting her writing award for fluency in a language that looks like English.
If you put the line-breaks in fun places, it makes a good 20th C poem According to the link, her award was for being the worst writer in America. I couldn't find a citation in the link, but a 1999 NYT article about bad writing says, "An essay by Ms. Butler that won first prize in this year's Bad Writing Contest said in part:...." According to the NYT article, the journal Philosophy and Literature "holds" the contest.
http://www.nytimes.com/1999/02/27/arts/when-ideas-get-lost-bad-writing-attacks-scholars-include-barbed-contest-with.html?pagewanted=all. Found no details on the award itself, and I'm tired of looking. Maybe Zach can step in. google is your friend.
http://www.denisdutton.com/language_crimes.htm Back when the Bulwer-Lytton contest was a thing, I entered a few times and won some honorable mentions, and got cited in the published collection. But I was a piker compared to some of the winners. One favorite opening for a novel which has stuck in my mind this many years: "I was a very, very, very, very, very, very sensitive child."
You just know you don't want to read another word. You just made my day!

"How Subarus Came to Be Seen as Cars for Lesbians"
I've owned two Subarus and I prefer women too. Coincidence? Back in the '70s when the hullabaloo over transgenderism hit the news, we high schoolers speculated
"What if we were women trapped in men's bodies, but also lesbian?" We thought we were being funny, not starting a political movement. In any case, it is possible that you are a member of a very protected class and don't even know it. the first time i heard/read that joke was from the March 1986 issue of The National Lampoon.
I Was a Gay Male Drag Queen Trapped in the Body of a Woman QUOTE: Just as I was about to blow my divorce settlement on a trip to Sweden, I met a preoperative transsexual lesbianï --my perfect opposite! Re: House Dem: Constitution was designed to increase government power
He is correct up to a point. The Constitution was designed to give the Federal Government more power than it had under the Articles of Confederation, which proved to be unworkable, but the Constitution was written to restrain governmental power, too. Article 1 Section 8 spells out the enumerated powers of the Federal Government and the 10th Amendment says that all other powers belong to the states and the people. As usual, he plays the Democrat game of being partly right and skewing the rest to his advantage. It's pretty discouraging how few people can cope with the idea of limited government. It's as if the only possibilities they can entertain are (1) Somalia and (2) totalitarianism. How about if we do a lot of interaction on a voluntary basis, so it's not all isolated anarchy, and we also rely on coercive government in a few, very carefully limited contexts? Voila, Constitution.

This is exactly why poseurs like David French ("service" to his country as a JAG Fobbit") need to be shunned and shamed. Deconcentrating the poor will create more "food deserts". I live out in the country and I am not near a grocery and you must have a car to get to one.
Question: Has time eased the low supply of good used cars that the Obama "cash for clunkers" created driving up prices for the poor. The increased epa regs regarding emissions has increased them. Only they don't pass state inspection if your state requires emissions testing, unless you are exempted due to milage. Less than 5000mi/yr. So unless you can sell it out of state or county...you're driving with an expired insp. Something they use as an excuse to pull you over.
We had a guy in who just bought a ford focus for $300. But it had almost 200,000 miles on it. He's a mechanic so I'm thinking he figured he could fix it. Who is surprised to learn blacks commit a disproportionate amount of crime. Blacks commit half the murders and 90% of the people they murder are other blacks. Black lives apparently don't matter to blacks. Read the article "the color of crime".
http://www.colorofcrime.com/2016/03/the-color-of-crime-2016-revised-edition/ Subaru bucked the Arab boycott of Israel, and were long the only option for locals who wanted a Japanese car.... so they won the fierce allegiance of many Israelis (some of whom still won't drink Pepsi because they caved to the boycott for years).
(As auto manufacturers use on-board computers and training programs to drive customers to a handful of licensed garages...) In Israel, Subarus are mid-priced, reliable Japanese cars that are very inexpensive to maintain due to the many well established garages here.
