We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Thank you, Allstate

Fancy folk have Chubb and the others, but good old Allstate has been a boon to our family over the past few months.  Also, pleasant, helpful, and easy to deal with. Eager to please.


A near-total car crash and, this week, a burst water pipe in the basement. Whatever it is, they send people to fix and repair every mess, like the Cat in the Hat.


We have their Homeowner's, their Auto, their Business, and their Umbrella. Worth it.


We have been expensive to them this year, but 25 years with only one (also a basement water pipe) previous claim.  Hope they don't cancel us. Thanks, Allstate.

I've had pretty good luck with State Farm over the years. Had a leak in the roof last fall that damaged some drywall. Called a contractor, he had State Farm come out. Hail damage, they figured. Complete new roof. Complete siding replacement. $1000 deductible covered it all.

I had allstate on my rental house next door to where I used to live....For 15 years, not one claim and they walked my rates up from $700 a year to $1800....I made one claim and they refused it because "It was a very heavy rain with wind"...the wind part of it blew my deductible up to catastrophic heights...LOL...allstate is lousy...

I've had USAA for 40+ years (I entered the army at age 17). As it's a member owned organization, the premiums are rock bottom, the service is impeccable and I get a subscriber's bonus when the premiums they have collected exceed a threshold of claims paid out (plus I now get a senior bonus for 40 years membership that exceeds the cost of my homeowner's premium).

I've been with USAA since 1976. They're a good company, and stood by me when the chips were down (of course, I had my paperwork in order, too).

Wait until you start getting the senior bonus (should be next January or February). It makes the SSA bonus look like peanuts!

USAA since '53 here. Can't count how many years that is any more. If we get a senior bonus, I don't know about it, but then my wife handles all that stuff for us. Now that I think about it, she does have me endorse a USAA check every now and then.

Sorry to hear about all the problems, especially the car crash. Hope everything is ok. We have USAA and don't have any complaints, they are expensive (by our standards anyway) but their service is amazing. I need to look into the umbrella policy.

I've only had Allstate on my car(s), and only when I lived in the US, but off-and-on since I was 16 (that's 52 years now) they've not been the cheapest, but they've always come through, and never jacked my premiums because of an accident. Can't comment on their other coverages, though.

That right there is what disgusts me.

You pay premiums every year, that go up every year, and when you have a claim you're lucky if they pay it, and don't drop you because you used what you have been paying for all this time.

USAA here too. Very happy with their friendly attitude and can do spirit. Never any hassle with them. Rather enjoy how they still often call me Sgt. Snyder even though that title was done with decades ago.
