Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

The Donald - good and bad

What Marco Rubio is all about is Warfare State republicanism. When he talks about restoring American Greatness it is through the agency of Imperial Washington. He has no kinship with Harding, Coolidge or Eisenhower. None of them were intent on searching the earth for monsters to destroy, as does Rubio in every single speech.


And make no mistake. Every time this naïve smart aleck chastises Obama for weak leadership and alleged failure to get the job forcefully done in Syria, Libya, Iraq, Yemen and countless elsewheres, the ghost of John Quincy Adams should be hollering in his grave. Stalking the globe for monsters to destroy is exactly what this wanna be little Napoléon is all about.

Dang, is this guy running for office and where can I go vote for him? I voted for Reagan and then for Kemp in '88 and pretty much walked away from the GOP after that. For all their talk about lower taxes and smaller government, they've done next to nothing except talk. Now they're being gifted with Trump, a truly odious buffoon the likes of which they so richly deserve, but I cannot feel too smug about it because we're all going to pay for it. Trump's got a plan to create jobs by slapping a big fat tariff on Chinese imports, for example, but I doubt they'll outweigh the cost of putting Walmart out of business. We can't all shop at the places you shop, Donald, some of us depend on Walmart being there. As long as China's paying us to take their goods, why don't we? China's not going to be able to keep giving away goods at below cost for forever, you know. Slapping a big tariff on Chinese goods will actually help them because they'll give away less free stuff, but it's going to kill Walmart. How's about you get rid of half the US government that seems hell-bent on making sure nothing ever gets manufactured in the US ever again? That seems to me a better plan.

I disagree with his isolationist bent. I do agree however that the Republicans have lost their way and have failed miserably at rolling back any progressive programs. I don't follow his thinking that 2000-2006 were peacetime years, which along with some other "huh" points leads me to suspect the rest of the article. The best path for this country with the very real Islamic threat is very difficult to chart, and playing "whack-a-mole" with drones on terrorist leaders is not ideal. It is a way in which we can fight a "war" with almost zero casualties on either side. But it might be the least bad course.
