Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Wednesday, January 6. 2016Wednesday morning linksPic of old dude deadlifting 300+ lbs. from article below. Mrs. BD felt proud to be deadlifting 100 lbs on Monday. Not bad for a semi-beginner fitness-seeking lady but despite strength she still can't find the strength to "Make me a sammich." "Make your own - and make one for me too. I'm busy." Sheesh. These modern women. I am reaching towards 200, but my grip is now becoming a limiting factor. I can lift it, but can't hold on to the bar for very many reps. Need more forearm strength to reach my modest goals. A weakling - I admit it. Deadlifts are the best, though, for middle-aged people, because it uses your whole fizzicle and mental self. Man, it is so damn hard. Back flat, chest up, ass back. F- gravity. Pick it up. Grunt loud. Drop it with a big crash. Good hard fun. Good Trainers vs. Bad Trainers: How Can You Tell the Difference? The New Years Eve sexual riot by Muslim terrorists/immigrants is not surprising. It is a surprise that it happened so quickly. This is Germany's and much of Europe's future. This is Merkel's chickens coming home to roost. This is Europe's liberals chickens coming home to roost. This is the bargin they made when they decided to allow an Islamist horde to immigrate. This is just the beginning. Expect Germans and Swedes to become Refugees looking for friendly countries to escape to.
Is Donald Trump a crude jerk from Queens?
Not really. In his real life, he is quite the gentleman. But he has an NYC shtick for the stage. Agree. Plus, folks calling DT a narcissist generally don't know what one is. DT may be thin-skinned - or maybe he's playing it that way because it's so obviously successful in an anti-PC era - but he looks like he's got a solid core identity. NPDs don't, so their lives are built trying to sell others on one image or another. Narcs love the projection they want you to buy into because behind it they are empty shells. I just don't see that in DT. The guy is way too self-possessed and on his toes to resemble a classic NPD. Maybe a bit of a braggart, but not a narcissist.
What irritated me about the article - and about some Trump detractors - is the notion that the author would vote write in, and be agreeable with HRC as POTUS, before voting for DT. This displays an utter lack of understanding of the concept of critical mass. The office of POTUS is not they key piece of the puzzle up for grabs in the 2016 election. Of bigger concern is who gets to appoint at least one or two Supreme Court justices. Nations don't usually crumble in a linear fashion. Rather, they undergo undulating courses of ups and downs. Right now we are on a downward trajectory, but even this is not linear - it is marked by waves where the peaks are gradually lower and the troughs are lower and lower as well. There is a critical threshold that, when reached, is irreversible in terms of our recovery. If HRC is POTUS and appoints liberal justices, it is FAR, FAR more likely that we will sink below this threshold and cross our Rubicon than if Trump is elected. Not voting for Trump (should he be the Republican nominee) is the same as outright voting for HRC and gambling with the future of our nation. It might make you feel good because you showed him (Trump) and taught him a lesson, but it won't be doing good. The amount of crime described in Oslo doesn't sound that large to one who knows American cities. That it sounds large to Norskis tells you how safe those places were before.
Re: Oslo is lost
It's stunning that the police would say the capital of Norway is lost. What's actually more stunning is that probably isn't the first city in Europe that is lost to Islamists/Muslim criminals - only maybe the first we've heard such a pronouncement from the police - but it is unlikely to be the last. We can thank the mult-culti left with their scurrilous charges and intimidation regarding racism, Islamaphobia, and all the rest. What the Moors failed to do after Mohammed's death, the "poor Muslim immigrant" is doing in the 21st Century. As we watch this slow motion cultural and social train wreck happen, we can benefit from the experience of others or become more "European" like the US left would prefer. We should realize that "European" is a moving target that is headed to a dark place. Take it from a yougin' BD, you can use a split grip for your deadlift! Look at the photo again, and you'll see the lifters hands are different from one another. A split grip is a great trick to help overcome a mental barrier. If you think you can lift the weight but can't hold onto it, then the problem is likely mental. Give it a shot next time you lift deadlift.
America Must Build More Icebreakers or We’ll Lose the Battle for the Arctic
Wait, isn't the Arctic suppose to be ice free? That's 315 lbs on the DL. 6 45+45lb bar.
Split grips are the way to go. Train your grip with loaded carries. Re: gun crime statistics
Here is some more statistics that I found interesting (http://www.globalresearch.ca/mass-shootings-in-america-a-historical-review/5355990). What is left unsaid in that page is that before mass shootings really started in the '70s, the ACLU was able to severely limit involuntary commitment in 1975 (O'Connor v. Donaldson). "Oppressed-feeling trannies is a major problem in the world today..."
I find I just can't even discuss the whole transgender business. I keep thinking: "these people are mentally ill." "The Russian Navy: Another Look"
From the link: "It’s a terrible comment on Russian history and its civilization that his bombastic maneuvers, even including some adolescent bare-chested sex appeals, have earned him at least temporarily broad support at home even in the face of a deteriorating economy." That comment overlooks the fact that he has also won broad support elsewhere in the most unexpected places through the simple expedient of being seen to combat Islamic extremist violence at the source. Perception is everything and nature abhors a vacuum; if a US president isn't going to act like he means it, then what stops a Russian president from stepping up to the plate? Now you're cookin'.
Ya got a pic of Rip showing you how to pull - CORRECTLY. I strongly recommend his book on barbell exercises called Starting Strength...as well as the website startingstrength.com. He'd be a good addition to the "farm" as well. I'll have to see if we can bring him into the fold. Do yourself a favor and get a pair of wrist straps for the deadlifts. People can call me a pussy if they want, but I'm not training my grip strength as the primary motivation in deadlifts; it's a core exercise.
I can get maybe 2 reps at 275 lbs and then the grip starts to waiver. I can do more than 10 reps at 275 and 2 reps at 330 with the straps. I only use the straps on the heaviest sets, and going commando on the warm-up sets helps the grip strength increase as well. I'm 53, and it wasn't long ago that my grip strength wouldn't hold up for more than a few reps at 205. Well, I view it as an exercise for almost everything - forearm, shoulder, and then neck to calf.
I use straps for deadlifts. I'm female and the grip strength isn't that important to me, though a good trainer will want you to work on the weak links. Some idea: Heavy farmers walks for time. Try it with 45 plates which are unwieldy and just walk as long as you can. It will be tough if you go long enough. Add thirty seconds or a minute each time. And will also give you some cardio if you do it long enough. You could also walk on tip toe if you want to hit the calves, too. Dead hangs for time can also help. You might check out things that grapplers, mma fighters, and rock climbers do because grip strength is important to them. Bruce Lee would do pushups on his fingers (this link shows him doing a 2 finger pushup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WCQGghedDM though I don't think you want to go that far),
RE: GRIP
A hook grip is IMHO a better option for heavy deadlifts (you can combine this with the mixed grip or use with double overhand grip). It hurts like hell and you'll have to get used to it, but it's very secure. It's the grip that almost all Olympic lifters use. My advice is to use the double overhand grip (without the hook) until you reach weights that defeat your grip. Using the weakest of the "standard" grips will help you develop your grip. At heavier weights, switch to a mixed grip and for your heaviest sets, use a hook grip (you won't want to use it for more than a few reps as your thumbs will feel like their being pulled off). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hook_grip RE: Grip training and farmers walks - I love farmer's walks, but you should try suitcase walks (basically a farmer's walk with one hand). Do them very heavy. You'll understand "weak link" the next day! Want a really strong grip? Add rope climbs. I use 1" to 1-½" ropes I purchased from Pacific Rope and Fibre (I got my ropes BEFORE the current rope craze and picked up an oily 2" rope they salvaged from an old ship (my wrestlers hate it). |
