We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
A very Happy New Year to all those who participate at Maggies. I first found the site looking for info on hostas. What did I know? Such a parade of intellect and experiences.
May the journey continue. I look forward to being rewarded with some new path every day.
Nice job, as my grandfather would say with a crook in his smile. Nice job. All of you.
During the time block covering New Year's Eve, before and after, we see expectations form and dissolve. None of the bad stuff we had went away and none of the good stuff we wished for has materialized.
The weather's the same, none of the roads been moved, all present and accounted for in the family including young Jake that got drunk and threw up. Way to go Jake, good start on adulthood.
We have some excitement down around my place when the iron tongue of Time tolls the midnight hour. A couple dozen folks gather in Courthouse Park and count down to midnight. One gets up in costume as Father Time but it is only a bed sheet and an egg timer. I guess we’re supposed to be cheered up by welcoming in what has been with us all along.
My uncle Letsgo "Bantam King" Lozko tried to do something with his hens but every time they heard the bell ring they scattered. He was trying for some poultry Busby Berkeley.

A Peer-Reviewed Survey of Geoscientists Finds There's Actually a Consensus Against the Claimed "Consensus" on Global Warming
Exemplary example of the right-wing echochamber! The Forbes article is from 2013 based on a study from 2012 — and a repeat by Bird Dog from 2013. Bravo!

In any case, it's a survey of oil scientists and engineers working in Alberta, the home of tar sand oil, not exactly unbiased experts in climate science. The purpose of the study was to understand "‘defensive institutional work’ by professionals within petroleum companies, related industries, government regulators, and their professional association."
See Lefsrud & Meyer, Science or Science Fiction? Professionals’ Discursive Construction of Climate Change, Organization Studies 2012.
Zeke....have you ever thought that you may be brainwashed?
It's a new year. Why not make it a goal to evolve past your world of involuntary and ideologically driven "belief spasms"?
Just trying to help.
Dale: have you ever thought that you may be brainwashed?
We read the study, Dale (when it was new). That's where you find out what the study is about, and whether the claims are consistent with the evidence provided.
Re: Is $250,000 a year in household income “middle class”?
If Sanders is elected, watch the upper level of "middle class" income be redefined lower just like when Al Gore suggested a "millionaire's tax" on people making $250K/year because (paraphrasing) "after four years, they've made $1M."
