The interesting thing about these e coli outbreaks is that they could be largely prevented by cold pasteurizing food. The public however, has rejected this idea and finds the risk of getting sick preferable.

One wonders if the public's attitude will change if the scaremongers are right and we run out of effective antibiotics? Somehow I doubt it.

Yes mudbug. That is exactly what I am referring to. I just gave it a more palatable name. The term doesn't conjure up fantasy images of food glowing in the dark or giving one radiation sickness once consumed.

re China surpasses Mexico in sending immigrants to California

Maybe three years ago I visited that fantastic aquarium in Monterrey, California. While there my jaw dropped at the demographics of the school kids there on field trips. They were virtually all Asians and Mexicans.

When I was in jr. high school c. 1970, I recall reading the intro to a piece that suggested we imagine living in a neighborhood (I may have the percentages wrong but you'll get the point) that is 15% white and and 30% Christian. They broke out all the demographics on race and religion but their point was our 'neighborhood' was the world.

At the time I thought, "Big whoop." I don't need to learn Spanish cause I am not going to Mexico and all those other people are across the ocean. Never in my wildest dreams did I think 'the world' would come to me, particularly at the speed that it has.
