We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Christmas Day dessert (re-posted)


You can go French with Bouche de Noel, or you can go Brit with Figgy Pudding.  Are there any other choices?  Oh yeah, Struffoli. I do not like that one even though it is Italian.

Do not even try to make a Bouche. Order it from the bakery. They will make whatever size you want.




Bring me a Figgy Pudding. Easy to make yourself.

When my children were little they loved making Bouche de Noel! They experimented with baking and being creative. This year I brandied some cherries and am considering an English Trifle for dessert.

Decorated gingerbread boys. About a week before Christmas my wife and I host a cookie decorating day for our family. We have great fun and the cookies last well past Christmas.

Waste not, want not. Pumpkin pie again, just like at Thanksgiving. Gotta use up all those pumpkins I grew somehow. In 1633 some Pilgrim wrote:

"For pottage and puddings and custards and pies
our pumpkins and parsnips are common supplies,
we have pumpkins at morning and pumpkins at noon,
If it were not for pumpkins we should be undoon."

Plus pumpkin pie is everyone's favorite dessert. Good thing too! Happiness is being content w what you have...

I'm very fond of pumpkin pie, too, but I'll go with sweet potato pie as an equal substitute, especially if it's served with unsweetened or only slightly sweetened whipped cream. Yum.

I believe it's buche de noel, log of christmas, rather than bouche de noel, mouth of christmas.

Can we all please stop with insisting upon dessert immediately following dinner? Let's all get up, go out for a wee-pipeful, maybe shoot a few baskets, THEN go back in and have dessert!!

At our home, it's always been a "carrot pudding". Traditional steamed pud, but with carrots and potatoes besides the raisins. My mother said it was the ultimate Prairie food, given all the immigrant communities produced same.

Pavlova with whipped cream and passionfruit. Looking at 28 degrees (82F) and plenty of sun in this part of the world.
