Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Making 12 knots under sail alone

Offshore, blustery, big swells, very bumpy ride to make it fun, headed towards the Canaries on a close reach - just as Columbus used to do on the trip west. Sea legs. I love the days at sea when you can feel the power of nature. All wonderful, exhilarating. Hold on to your hat - and your wine glass.

12 knots is about the speed of a modern steam/motor freighter. They are capable of higher speeds, but sail slower to reduce fuel costs.

In WW II, convoys were often limited to 8 knots or so by the older freighters.

If that is the Wind Surf, you are wrong.

"The ship sails at 10-12 knots with engines and up to 15 knots with wind and engines."

That means a max of 5 knots under wind alone.

When the winds are right, she can do 12.5 knots with props off.

I apologize. I was wrong.

I was very surprised to find out that it is possible for a ship that size to travel at 12 knots.
