Over the transom -

My old Grandpa said to me, 'Son, there comes a time in every man's life when he stops bustin' knuckles and starts bustin' caps and usually it's when he becomes too old to take a whoopin'.'

I don't carry a gun to kill people; I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don't carry a gun because I'm evil; I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the World.

I don't carry a gun because I hate the government; I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don't carry a gun because I'm angry; I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone; I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man; I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate; I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

I don't carry a gun because I love it; I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

Police protection is an oxymoron: Free citizens must protect themselves because police do not protect you from crime; they just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take a whoopin'!

Thoughts On A Sunday
Very cool weather has arrived in New Hampshire, motivating me to fire up the Official Weekend Pundit Woodstove for the first time. It wasn't until early evening the temps dipped below freezing and the time to fire it up...

I carry a gun because it's lighter than a policeman.

I carry a gun because when seconds count, the police are minutes away.

On a more serious note, I recommend Jeffery's Snyder's article, "A Nation of Cowards." I don't think I've seen a more effective treatise on being armed because it spells out the MORAL and ETHICAL case. I carry a gun when I'm shooting trap or hunting quail, otherwise, its too much of a hassle, and I'm not particularly worried about the gummit, the police or the neighborhood.

I swear on all that's holy, if my concealed carry instructor said something like, "'Son, there comes a time in every man's life when he stops bustin' knuckles and starts bustin' caps'" I'd have been out the door.

That's your choice, hope it works out OK for you.

Must be a nice neighborhood, like mine. Unfortunately mine is changing and the day is coming when I am going to have to make a choice; move, arm myself, or worry (if my wife hadn't passed it would be a no-brainer, I'd have gotten a gun to honor my duty to protect her).

I'm surprised that you aren't worried about the 'gummit' taking that choice away. What's the old saw, "The law prohibits bums and millionaires from sleeping under bridges", add to that "For our safety, we are prohibiting seniors, the handicapped and young healthy thugs from carrying guns".

I'm not too worried about the second amendment because I know how the game is played and with Heller and MacDonald, the gun grabbers aren't going to make significant inroads on the second amendment.

anyone really interested in destroying gun grabber arguments should read both those cases, which are ... but no, that's too much work, easier write a blahg like Dan'l Boone-Crockett at the Alamo gettin' ready to bust some caps up Santa Anny's ass.

yeah, I know the NRA and the Brady bunch need each other to validate each other's "good fight"and how bickering on the fringe of the 2A will always be magnified into the the fight of the century, but... its all branding.

people I know who are concealed carry permit holders don't talk like cartoons out of the 19th century, in fact we rarely talk about it at all, because its not a big deal, and if someone actually says "bustin' caps" it is a stone cold fact that person carries a gun becauses he feels inadequate.

The reason I was asking was for the wife and kids. If there is trouble, here is a list of people who are of high moral fiber to turn to.

I offer some words from Col Jeff Cooper, taken from his excellent book, The Art of the Rifle:

In fact, it is the only means of resisting tyranny, because a citizenry armed with rifles cannot be tyrannized."

Pistols are defensive implements. For the up close and personal encounters.

Coop sounds like is a loon. I'll shoot any NRA match that doesn't include the word "tactical" or ask me to dress up in period attire. but i see this as just competition, not a real life first-person-shooter fantasy.

I've never shot anyone up close and personal. What's it like?

not good. Scared, glad it wasn't me. I remember each confrontation clearly and no, it did not get any easier. Loud noise that the adrenaline covered up, blood. I never knew how much blood a body contained.
Different than combat, more personal and no bragging rights. In fact I get flashbacks, wouldn't mind forgetting those incidents.

Yes John, no one answer.
