We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Have you watched the show 'Hell on Wheels' on AMC. You have t look past the storylines, but they show a lot of the railroad construction. In recent seasons, the hero switched over to the Central Pacific Railroad side so we see the Chinese and the challenges of building through the Sierras as opposed to the prairie
There is a similar story in Canada with the building of the CPR to link central Canada with British Columbia. Pierre Berton's "The National Dream" (1970) and "The Last Spike" (1972) chronicled its building. The books were later turned into a TV series. In Canada, Chinese labourers worked eastward from Vancouver, while whites laboured westward from Ontario. They met, more or less, at Craigellachie in the Monashee Mountains where the "Last Spike" was driven in 1885.
