Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

I almost fell for that Why Do We Fall For Bogus Research link but then I saw the link actually went to the Traditions in Southern College Football story. Nice try, but you didn't fool me!
And I appreciate you fixing the link, I had not seen that particular column on the problem of 'bogus' science before and it was well worth the read. It seems like every week we see some new cure for cancer or heart disease or nasal polyps and nothing ever comes of this 'breakthrough'. After the initial headline-grabbing "new study shows..." story, you never see the follow-up story "follow-up studies show the the new study we reported on last week was a big pile of garbage". If you're doing a study that has a 99.5% chance of filtering out garbage, that sounds like you're doing a good job of filtering out the garbage - but if you're looking at 10,000 studies, that 99.5% confidence level suggests you're looking at 50 studies worth of garbage, even though each and every researcher on each and every of those studies has a 99.5% confidence level that he hasn't garbaged up his research. 99.5% of the studies come up with nothing newsworthy, .5% come up with something new and interesting. Which ones are the ones more likely to be the garbage studies do you suppose?
My kid will experience his first home game at Ole Miss today.
It looks like a lot of fun. He's only going if he's up to date on his studies. At least that's what he promised me. Haven't been to a game in Oxford in 22 years. Played with the idea this past week but the 6+ hour drive from Biloxi was motivationally prohibitive.
"Immigration: The invasion"
It has reached invasion proportions. The illegal immigration, most from Mexico and Central America, but more and more from Asia and the Middle East is out of control. It is so bad no one has a clue as to how many are here. Those who favor it claim a "mere" 12 million or so and those who do not favor it claim 34 million or so. Regardless of the numbers what we do know for sure is the numbers are increasing and with any form of amnesty it will increase exponentially. Then there are the many forms of refugee immigration. The U.S. is at the mercy of the UN on this. We get millions of "refugees" from countries that hate us and undoubtedly there are terrorists imbedded with the refugees. But we don't control it. We don't get to decide who comes in, where they go or how much we will have to pay to support them. In fact allofthat is secret; somehow our constitution is ignored and citizens are not allowed to know what our government is doing. And once these "refugees" get here they become eligible to ask that we pay to bring their relatives here as well (and their relatives and the relatives of the new relatives ad infinitum). Then there are the "normal" immigrants, the ones a radical anti-constitutional congress authorized in the 60's (you remember that, right?) We get a couple million of these and again we have no say in where they are placed, how much we must pay to support them and what countries they come from; it's a secret from the citizens. Then there are the "students" and workers (H1B mostly) who come here and somehow never go home. They too bring their families and are eligible to bring their relatives and anyone they ever knew growing up and god knows who else. All in all there are millions and millions of them coming here for one reason; "free stuff". But there is no free lunch so who pays? Why you do of course with income taxes and property taxes and taxes/fines/penalties for not having enough insurance (don'tcha see by now that Obamacare was to provide insurance for all the immigrants and had to be paid for somehow?). It cannot be stopped, unless of course we decided to enforce our laws and to stop keeping everything secret. It will not be stopped, unless we vote out the cabal of anti-American politicians who cater to the various business and immigrant groups. But wait, is that football on TV? No worries grab a beer and watch the game, everything's fine... The Best College Football Traditions...
... are your own. Well, no. William & Mary football traditions suck, frankly.
Get Grillin’! Common Grilling Mistakes & How to Avoid Them
Oops #5: You don’t let the meat rest. The result: Loss of juices, dry meat The fix: After grilling, cover meats with aluminum foil and let them rest for at least five minutes before digging in to allow the meat to seal in all the juices. We know you are hungry to eat that juicy burger, steak or chicken, but it will be worth the wait! a myth. and, "seal in juices" is left over nonsense from why its best to sear meat (the malliard reaction) I was going to point out that, America's Test Kitchen disagrees with your link, but I read what Amazing Ribs has to say, and I can confidently say that it does not seem to matter. Some cuts seem to benefit, some don't.
