Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

FDA: Mexicans Defecating in Farm Fields Getting Americans Sick
We should have picked our own cilantro. Funny, because a few months back, or maybe last year the USDA was pushing a regulation that farm market workers were going to have to wear gloves when bagging up your produce so that they wouldn't be contaminating it with bacterial and stuff. Because food poisoning is a serious thing. No mention of the illegals bringing back a-resistant TB, measles, enterovirus, etc. etc. etc Talk about Squirrel. Wash all vegetables thoroughly before preparing them?
It worked for my mother. The entire nutrient management program (dealing with manure from livestock) has been scewed up by the feds due to the Food modernization and safety act of 2010- supposedly because animal manure was causing food bourne illness. All streams and bodies of water have to be fenced off from livestock to keep from "contamination".
Why do we listen to these people at all ? While mandatory sentences were intended to deal with 'slap on the wrist' issues, they've created a much deeper problem.
Whereas a judge who is consistently excessively lenient is publicly visible, mandatory sentenced depend on exactly what charges the prosecutor brings. The prosecutor's decisions are done in private, and frequently can involve 'deals'. So there is still plenty of room for corruption but it's behind the scenes. wrong. you've got a bizarre sense of what is "corruption". maybe you watch too many police procedurals on TV.
determinate sentencing is intended to give consistent sentencing outcomes, because the guidelines, with their enhancements and aggravating factors, are public. the same offenses in Boston and Utah should result in the same sentence. no one wants a return to indeterminate sentences like 10-20 years, with actual time served determined by a prison commission. here's the sentencing guidelines, you tell me what you think is corrupt or unfair. these reforms are intended to give judges some additional options in sentencing lower level offenders, apparently drug offenders. charges are determined by a committee of prosecutors, based on evidence provided by the police. obviously, this is "private", how on earth could this not be "private"? everyone (defense counsel, judges) who works in this business knows the government typically overcharges as guilty pleas are inevitably negotiated with defense lawyers and always approved by the court. you're going to find this shocking, Matlock, but it's true: deals are always made. this is because the client is guilty of something and anyone in the business can review a case file and come close to predicting the sentence, almost always within the range of fairness. Fiorina: All the candidates are reasonably articulate, but I especially admire anyone who can take a complex subject and distill it into a statement, explanation that is not only meaningful but can be understood by most people. I do sense something different about her campaign, maybe it's because she is more direct and not so cagey.
Planned Parenthood: Borrowed from an Ace poster:

“The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children.” ― Dietrich Bonhoeffer As an aside, I'm a big Bonhoeffer fan.
Another of his I really like: "A God who let us prove his existence would be an idol." I'm just going to say, that members of the royal family in England named Charles have not been all that good for England. Or is it for kings named Charles. I guess it depends on your Commonwealth sympathies.
A neighbor of mine was descended from one of the hanging judges, but she never mentioned it. The only reason I found out about it was that she or her son mentioned one time that her maiden name was also the name of street in a nearby city. Years later, I did the research on the web and made the connection.
I read elsewhere he said 35 years. I guess 33 is close enough for prince work.
Why Does The Republican Party Exist?
QUOTE: Both of the great political parties were controlled by greed and selfishness. Both were the defenders and protectors of slavery. For nearly three-quarters of a century these parties had control of the Republic. The principal object of both parties was the protection of the infamous institution. Both were eager to secure the Southern vote and both sacrificed principle and honor upon the altar of success. At last the Whig party died and the Republican was born. This party was opposed to the further extension of slavery. The Democratic party of the South wished to make the "divine institution" national while the Democrats of the North wanted the question decided by each territory for itself. ... This was the condition in 1858-60. I love cilantro!
I grew some in the garden and the critters ate it down to the ground. My wife had to talk me down from dispensing some .40 cal justice in the middle of the neighborhood. Grow some kale to divert critters attention. I call it 'sacrificial kale'. Imho that's all kale is good for.
I've read that kale concentrates heavy metals like thallium. Which is poisonous, I suppose, if you eat a bale of kale.
I like mandatory sentencing for actual and serious crimes. I dislike the practice of multiple charges for a single crime.
I do not think it makes sense to sentence a person to more then 5 years in jail unless the crime is so serious or the criminal is so dangerous that they must remain incarcerated for life to protect the public. Sentences longer then 5 years take away the incentive for the criminal to reform and play into the hands of the hardened criminals who control prison life. "When government gives tax breaks, working stiffs pay for it."
Politicians love judiciously applied tax breaks. They allow them to display their benevolence and largesse. Simply reducing taxes or not collecting taxes in the first place so that tax breaks wouldn't be necessary is a non-starter of course. Never, ever leave fiscal power in the hands of the great unwashed, those gormless private citizens who couldn't possibly ever understand how best to spend their own money. Where exactly is "Divine Comedy" being taught at a high-school or undergrad level? I'd like to send my admittedly non-existent children to school there.
it was taught in my high school, Abandon All Hope Ye Who Enter Here was a sign on the dean of students' door.
FDA: Mexicans Defecating in Farm Fields Getting Americans Sick...I hate cilantro anyway
As a precaution, I never eat my Mexican tomatoes raw, though I love tomato salad. On the other hand, I eat Mexican cilantro most days- but I have never gotten the runs from it. Not too consistent. |
