Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Hillary and 1947: We talk about generals fighting the last war and apparently that applies to the political realm, as well. But, in that regard I don't think HRC is so much more stale than the other candidates. Nor, is the voter blameless, certainly they do not demand more.
Clinton concluded by asking some interesting questions. "How do we respond to technological change in a way that creates more good jobs than it displaces and destroys?" And "what are the best ways of nurturing successful startups outside the successful corridors, like Silicon Valley?" Michael Barone It might help to discuss the real economic game changers and their consequences, instead of finger pointing and archaic bromides But a good question, non the less. What are the jobs of the future going to look like? If you know that, you know how to educate and prepare the next generation. Reuctio ad absurdum. What good does it do to train people to be sailors if there are few sailing ships, in other words training for jobs that are on their way out. Obviously people have to be trained for the jobs of the future, but wait, that would mean a real education overhaul. QUOTE: Selling Baby Parts No. QUOTE: Nucatola repeatedly clarifies that there is no profit motive. She says: “This is not a new revenue stream the affiliates are looking at. This is a way to offer the patient the service that they want. Do good for the medical community.” Nucatola also makes clear at several points that the tissue donation helps medical researchers and is something many patients seek: “I think every one of them is happy to know that there’s a possibility for them to do this extra bit of good in what they do. And I think patients respond most to knowing the types of outcomes that it might contribute to, so, for example, Alzheimer’s research, Parkinson’s research.” http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/huppke/ct-huppke-planned-parenthood-video-20150715-story.html QUOTE: The day Obama awarded Iran hegemony in the Middle East No, again. Iran became a regional hegemon when the U.S. invaded and occupied Iraq, plunging the Sunni world into turmoil. QUOTE: We must save the alpha males before they are extinct. There's no reason to believe that the ratio of alpha-to-beta males is any different today than yesterday. It's going to be an interesting visit with my Cardiac doctor today; ten years after my father passed (in the summer) from a heart attack, two months after my aunt died from a heart attack, and I'm now about the same age as my grandfather was when he died from a heart attack (while having a tooth pulled).
It is at least comforting to know how I'll go when I go. Yeah, I come from a heart attack family too, maternal and paternal sides. So far (84 and counting) I've beat the odds with medications, pacemaker, exercise routines, and clean living after age 60. Prefer not to discuss pre-60.
"Jim Webb’s Long War With His Own Party"
He's turned his coat so many times it's hard to tell. "Hillary and 1947"
Hillary is ignorant, uninformed, perhaps even uninterested in the world and the risks, but she is not stupid. She will get the nomination and with it goes an automatic Democrat vote of 43%-47% as long as she is still breathing. What she needs to do is keep the base on her side and attract 5%-8% more. How to do this??? A simple solution really; offer more free stuff and tell the ignorant and envious base that you are going to take it from the rich, the banksters and Wall Street. Hillary will be a disaster for our beloved country. She must appeal to the lazy, shiftless and angry and once elected she must indeed fleece the rich and give to the "poor". But we allknow the rich are smart, hire lawyers and accounting firms and will not stand for a good fleecing. It will be the middle class that must pay for her promises. Her alligator mouth is going to take a big bite out of the productive in this country. Her plan is slouching towards socialism and we shall all pay for this the second biggest mistake in presidential politics. Re: Walker Derangement Syndrome:
You don't know the half of it. One Sikivu Hutchinson, Ph.D. (in Performance Studies, from New York University - that's as in the performing arts) is published in the Huffington Post with an essay titled "Why Prison Warden Scott Walker Must Be Stopped", at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sikivu-hutchinson/why-prison-warden-scott-w_b_7797508.html . In that she goes to some lengths to excoriate him because the State of Wisconsin incarcerates a higher percentage of it's black population than all but two other states, for "draconian" sentencing, and for highly disproportionate suspension rates for black children over whites in the schools. So I clicked through on the links and read the citations. Then I commented. So far, neither the author nor the Huffington Post have answered my queries regarding the fact that all the data cited in the incarceration studies were from 2010 - before Gov. Walker took office. And that the difference between the rates shown in a 2005 study (that they did not cite, but that I found on the net) showed a 10% reduction. And that Gov. Walker in any case cannot be held responsible for people put in jail while his predecessor - a Democrat - was in office. In addition, the study on suspensions used data from the 2011-2012 school year, his first year in office, acknowledged they'd been higher, and that the Milwaukee Public School system says they've gone down since then. I've gone on Dr. Hutchinson's Twitter feed and responded to her there as well. So far, no comment from her. I used the hashtags #badresearch #bias. I believe those stats are pre-Walker. Actually, he has excellent support within the law enforcement arena.
Re: soul crushing facts about income inequality
QUOTE: 12. The top 1% of America owns 50% of investment assets (stocks, bonds, mutual funds). The poorest half of America owns just .5% of the investments. This should be a clue to the difference between the rich and the non-rich. People who invest wisely do a lot better than those who don't. The left continually demonizes the rich so that people don't try to learn from them. QUOTE: 19. Young people in the U.S. are getting poorer. The median wealth of people under 35 has dropped 68% since 1984. The median wealth of older Americans has increased 42%. This is partially due to #22 below. Another cause is the difficulty the young have in finding jobs they can do. When I was young, kids could make money doing all sorts of things like paper routes and odd jobs, but many of those jobs were regulated away. The result is that kids aren't brought up in a culture that encourages them to work and it doesn't value it properly. For the working age young, a cause is the transfer of wealth from the young to the old via programs like Social Security. More from the left. QUOTE: 20. The average white American’s median wealth is 20 times higher ($113,000) than the average African American ($5,600) and 18 times the Hispanic American ($6,300). What do those white people study in college (if they go) and what kinds of jobs do the do? I got a degree in mechanical engineering and one in computer science. There were almost no blacks in any of my classes. That may have improved but I doubt it has improved much in part because of #22. QUOTE: 27. In 1946, a child born into poverty had about a 50 percent chance of scaling the income ladder into the middle class. In 1980, the chances were 40 percent. A child born today has about a 33 percent chance. For some of the answer, see #19 above. QUOTE: 22. Since 1979, high school dropouts have seen median weekly income drop by 22 percent. Ethnically, the highest dropout rates are among Hispanic and African American children. This should be another clue that dropping out of high school is not an income enhancer. I would argue that the quality of primary education in the US has declined rather precipitously so the value of a high school education isn't what it used to be. The education establishment is dominated by the left and fights to keep kids in their schools rather than allow parents to choose their schools and escape their failure. There is also a culture among many blacks that studying is being "white" which as we all know is not something to be proud of. QUOTE: 28. Despite massive tax cuts, corporations have not created new jobs in America. The job creators have been small new businesses that have not enjoyed the same huge tax breaks. First, corporations don't pay taxes. Taxes are just costs of doing business that they pass on to their customers. However, those "massive tax cuts" have left the corporate tax rate the highest in the industrialized world which encourages American multi-nationals not to repatriate money they earned overseas. Increased regulations have hurt small businesses disproportionately since they are less able stay in compliance with them not to mention pay for that compliance. So now, more small businesses are failing now then are being formed. Again, more great ideas from the left. QUOTE: 34. During the Great Recession, the average wealth of the 1% dropped about 16 percent. Meanwhile the wealth of the 99% dropped 47 percent. The government encouraged people to buy houses they could not afford and even those who had houses they could afford, most lost value. Since the majority of the wealth of the 99% is in their house, this is not a surprise. As usual, most of the left's arguments are without context or the realization that most of what they complain about is brought on by policies they espouse. In a democratic capitalist society "rich" people are like the canary in the coal mine. If there is plenty of opportunity and fair tax and regulartary environment there will be more people succeeding. But with free choice comes the opportunity to choose badly and many of those bad choices contribute to lower earnings and needing welfare. What we need is more rich and super rich people not less. And we need to stop rewarding and encouraging people to make bad decisions.
Sheesh ...
Navy to ban fried food. From the article: The Navy Times reported that the Navy would soon stop frying chicken, French fries, and shrimp, and instead bake them in “state-of-the-art ovens.” “Whole milk will be replaced by skim and soy; fruits and vegetables will be on prominent display,” the report noted. “The fast line will remain, but its offerings will be cut back. “And this is just the beginning.” The report also said the military’s “Go for Green” healthy eating campaign will “become the standard” for all mess halls, on land and at sea. http://freebeacon.com/national-security/navy-to-ban-fried-food/ I wonder how much those vendors want for ... umm ... their ice cream? I'm good with vanilla.
Ever notice the folks advocating a return to a stone age society are the ones least likely to survive more than a hour or two if it actually happened?
What’s Left?: Social Democrats in Disarray
Fifty years of government by the hard (though gulag-free) Left is called capitalist by a deluded apologist for the Left who expects more Leftist policies (the only one missing is the gulag) to solve European problems. They knew from bitter experience that if markets really were “free” and left to “self-regulate” then society would be devastated Delusion. They know no such thing. Like practically everyone else on the Left, I expected to be able to meet the worst crisis of capitalism in generations with more aplomb Whatever this is a crisis of, it is not of capitalism. creating an exciting new language and style of popular protest Tired re-treads of the 19th century, whom, had they obtained power, would have been more bloody than the USSR.
